What’s your favourite album of all time

DH and I embraced the shuffle generation very early on from our very first iPod and before that mixed tapes. It seems like decades since we last actually listened to an album.

today we had a long drive so we’ve done
Bat out of Hell (I’d forgotten how good that was)
brothers in arms
a Joni Mitchell one was a bit dreary
Ella Fitzgerald gold (absolutely brilliant)
Invisible touch (it seems the fuck up your life lyric has been cleansed on Spotify)

give me your recommendations we are very open minded with music tastes and genres the only thing that brings the shutters slamming down is rap

Our album collection (vinyl) after being neglected for many years is about to be brought back to life with the purchase of a new turntable and speakers. The first to benefit will probably be A Farewell to Kings (Rush - DH) or Then There Were Three (Genesis - me).

Exile on Coldharbour Lane by Alabama 3. Every song is perfect.

I have never heard of anyone else who likes Alabama 3. Top choice!

Ophelia by Nathalie Merchant is also amazing

It is. I would also add her “Leave Your Sleep” to the list. Hard to choose other favourites, but off the top of my head -

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Jeff Buckley - Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Lou Reed - Berlin

The the infected or Syncronicity by The Police. Probably The The though if playing in the car

RosesAndHellebores · 25/10/2025 11:41

The first one I bought The Slider, TRex.

Gasbox · 25/10/2025 11:43

I only ever really listen to full albums, way too much time spent lying on my bed listening to whatever the guy in my local record shop had recommended that week as a teenager so it became a habit I suppose. Picking one favourite is really hard (I have hundreds!) but if I had to dig deep and name the one album I don't feel I could go the rest of my life without hearing again it would be Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park.

ComedyGuns · 25/10/2025 11:44

Bummed by The Happy Mondays.

It’s the one album that I can say blew me away from start to finish. It was released just as the rave scene was hitting the provinces and I bought it one Saturday afternoon, and from the opening bars of Country Song I was literally glued to my sofa until the end.

No other album has ever done that to me before or since, and I’m so pleased it’s now had the remastering it deserves.

The The’s Infected is incredible too, although I prefer Soul Mining. Need to revisit Syncronicity..

I never thought much of the HMs but after this glowing review I'm going to listen to Bummed start to finish ASAP!

Brilliant! Make sure you listen to the remastered version.

They were so drug-addled and could hardly string a sentence together, but so talented (Black Grape too).

Paul Oakenfold was the wizard behind the scenes though.

Seekanddestroy · 25/10/2025 15:53
