Had the police around earlier to fill in a quick questionnaire in regard to a serious incident that just happened locally. As we live on the main road they wanted to know if we saw anything, the usual. My mum then pipes up that’s she’s been through this years ago when they were investigating a murder in our home town (not our current hometown) I was shocked as I’m 37 and never heard of this murder in my whole life, granted I was 3 at the time but still… things like that usually spread for years. I then went down a rabbit hole, turns out the murder happened right across the street from our old estate. The woman murdered was called Penny bell. She was found stabbed more than 50 times in her car, they still haven’t caught the killer. I never knew this whole time and it kinda threw me.
what’s the most shocking thing to happen in your hometown?

Irish nurse in Glasgow got abducted from nightclub in Patrick, taken to man's flat in Kelvin dale, murdered in flat, man disposed of girls belongings in local park near me and disposed of her body in barrels on a local farm

Glasgowgal200 · 22/10/2025 18:06

Someone I used to work with knew the family of a young woman who was murdered by her boss in blairdardie (Glasgow)

Mylifesadrama · 22/10/2025 18:07

Not much crime where I live luckily but the main thing that happened in 1994 was 2 young lads (early 20s) being dragged out of the local pub and assassinated in the garden. They’d upset some drug dealers apparently.

A 17 year old girl who was training to be a hairdresser and who used to wash my hair was murdered by her boyfriend many years ago.

The killer was caught and was detained in a secure hospital with no time limit.

HarryGrotter · 22/10/2025 18:10

Colin Pitchfork not too far from where my dad lived then and I lived with my mum about 15 miles away

WhitePudding · 22/10/2025 18:15

Someone was killed in a fight in our local Morrisons a few years ago.

Howtodealwithkids · 22/10/2025 18:22

Hollie Gazzard - absolutely senseless killing of such a beautiful young lady!

Zac Evans - someone I know was on duty as a nurse in A and E at the time and his injuries were horrific.

Fred West- my friend lived near him, and i remember watching them demolish his house. A family member went to school with his daughter Heather (who he killed) and often went to their house after school - she was very lucky!!

Dan Brown - killed by a drunk driver who didn’t stop or care

Remember seeing the police officers doing a fingertip search in the morning

James Bulger abduction and murder by two school boys.

Poodlelove · 22/10/2025 18:36

I was 7 years old and in the night a man shot his wife in the front garden just as we were going to sleep.

PrincessC0nsuelaBananaHammock · 22/10/2025 18:42

There's a shooting or stabbing at least once a month. Loads of raids. Jamie Bulger being murdered in the early 90s. Loads tbh.

IndigoBluey · 22/10/2025 18:48

The poor mother and daughter who decided to end things in a Travel lodge hotel near Glasgow. All because of some wicked women who had trapped them in a make belief story of large amounts of money being owed so they couldn’t find any other way out

It was over 30 years ago now but an elderly woman was found brutally murdered in the bus station toilets ,the murderer wasn't caught for years and was only caught years later when there was a DNA match after he was arrested for a minor crime.

I remember this. I lived in Bury at the time, my children were still toddlers. Very frightened atmosphere around the town
Rest in peace Shirley ❤️

Name changed for this.

I frequently drive past the church where Angelika Kluk, a young Polish student, was murdered around 20 years ago. The tiny, tiny sliver of good - if you can call it that - that came out of it was that the investigation in to the evil man convicted of her murder resulted in closure for the families of two other young women who had disappeared 10/15 years previously.

Dollymylove · 22/10/2025 19:03

@Dobbyatemysocks I think Halliwell has been suspected of Claudia Lawrence's disappearance

Two very close to where I live the Llandarcy murders, the killer was found many years later by DNA however by that time he was dead. Also the Clydach murders, Dai Morris was convicted but everyone local believes it was a miscarriage of justice, he died in jail, South Wales Police officers were involved and it was a total cover up, the killers still walk free

Nope not everyone. Not even close to everyone.

A girl I went to school with was kidnapped by her ex, taken up the local hills where he took her down a farm track and shot her point blank in the face with a sawn off shot gun (I could be wrong there), then just drove away and left her there. Apparently she had stopped him seeing their daughter and he decided to get back at her for it. Was horrendous, she was barely 20. Poor wee girl was left with no mum and her dad locked up for murder.

Zoec1975 · 22/10/2025 19:24

Evil as hell Colin Pitchfork who raped and murdered two 15 yr olds, just down the road :(

Awful. My ex husband's brother went to school with him, said he was a real wrong un then with creepy rumours about his upbringing. My dentist is near Twickenham Green where Amelie DelaGrange was murdered by him, I always feel very sad for her & her family when I'm in that area.

It was an awful time. Such a horrible man 😡

Arlanymor · 22/10/2025 19:35

Not my current home city - but I went to school in a town where my former teacher murdered another teacher who was also his wife That was a bit of a shocker.

Clydach has always reminded me of the Hanratty case. He protested his innocence, others did, became a cause célèbre... 2002 DNA proved Hanratty definitively guilty. Dai Morris' DNA was linked to a bloodstained sock at the murder scene weeks after he died. He faced two trials and was found guilty at both. I actually think this was a fairly useful statement from the heddlu which was just prior to the DNA evidence being confirmed: https://www.south-wales.police.uk/news/south-wales/news/2021/january/south-wales-police-statement---clydach-murders/

There have been some fairly high profile murders in Bristol over the years, but the most shocking (to me) was one that barely got any headlines. A young woman who was working as a prostitute was battered to death and her body was dumped in the lake in our local park. I didn't know her as such but I had an encounter with her shortly before, she was with a man who tried to rob me, she walked off and shouted at him not to do it. When the murderer was found, he was someone my friend used to know as they lived in a children's home together. I think about her a lot, especially this time of year as that's when it happened.

FeetLikeFlippers · 22/10/2025 19:52

I live in south London so how long have you got?! What shocks me is the amount of stuff that goes on and never even gets into the national news - a few months ago the whole of Brixton high street was cordoned off after an accident and it turned out they were literally scraping bits of someone off the road after their bike got caught under the wheels of a lorry and they’d been dragged for a mile because the driver hadn’t noticed…but nothing about it even online. Also all the petty crime that goes on, like the phone thief epidemic - half the culprits live on the same estate as a friend of mine and everyone knows who they are and what they’re up to. Then the son of someone I know got stabbed in public last week and nearly died, and again not in the news.

Slight contrast to my home town (small market town up north) where the local paper recently reported the attempted theft of a sandwich from the Co-op, complete with an appeal for information!

The house fire that killed the six Philpott children, which was started deliberately by their father.
