What’s the most shocking thing to happen in your neighbourhood/home town.

Had the police around earlier to fill in a quick questionnaire in regard to a serious incident that just happened locally. As we live on the main road they wanted to know if we saw anything, the usual. My mum then pipes up that’s she’s been through this years ago when they were investigating a murder in our home town (not our current hometown) I was shocked as I’m 37 and never heard of this murder in my whole life, granted I was 3 at the time but still… things like that usually spread for years. I then went down a rabbit hole, turns out the murder happened right across the street from our old estate. The woman murdered was called Penny bell. She was found stabbed more than 50 times in her car, they still haven’t caught the killer. I never knew this whole time and it kinda threw me.
what’s the most shocking thing to happen in your hometown?

Not quite our town but very close and it felt close to home. Fred West.

I remember that. There was a series of women who’d discovered their hair had been cut whilst sitting on the bus.

Was this Heather Barnett or someone else with the same situation? Danilo Restivo was convicted for Heather’s murder but I think they suspect him over others too.

Catwalking · 22/10/2025 15:27

Here’s an odd ‘neighbourhood’ 1.
Between age of 10 to 13 my family lived in Aus & i was @ boarding sch. in UK, so had to fly for hols. Onetime during night time part of the flight the Pilot told us passengers not to worry about the explosions we could see below because plane was flying too high for the Vietnamese to do any damage. I really did see “explosions”, ‘under’ the plane! (& am still surprised I was on a flight @ that age without an adult!)

OnlyFrench · 22/10/2025 15:33

@Tarkanyes, it was Heather. He was also convicted of a similar murder in Italy

Disappearance of Lee Boxall back in the 80s.

That one truly breaks my heart.
The documentary with his dad singing "Where are you now, are you safe and well". Broke me into pieces.
I truly beleive he was killed by the church/youth club leaders when he stuck up for the girls being assaulted.
His pictures look lovely. He looks like a sweet family boy. Really, sick and cruel people in this world.

Nothing shocking anymore people murdered fairly regularly where I live and rape isn't that uncommon to the point it wouldn't be shocking

Edited

Same, a lot of gun and machete crime here, a lot of murders, rapes and sexual assaults. Sickening really.

CatMum27 · 22/10/2025 16:16

This bit of evil carried out his crimes in the vicinity of my childhood home not long before I was born. Makes me shudder. My dad briefly lived a few doors down from him at one point https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Samuel_Cook

Completely awful and I agree with your thoughts on what most likely happened :-(

I was same age as Lee, 15 in 1988 when he went missing. I vividly remember the local press reporting at the time. The awfulness of not knowing must be absolutely devastating for his parents.

Tdcp · 22/10/2025 16:32

Dennis Nilsen lived up the road from me when I was a kid.

In a village I moved to when I was 10, a paedophiles house was set on fire with him inside and he died, no one was ever charged for that but there was A LOT of parents involved.

Same village, the local funeral director/ mortician was caught having sex with the bodies only because his girlfriend tested positive for an std that you can only get from a dead person after suffering with 'odd symptoms for a while.

In school, my teacher was caught "buying young boys" in Costa Rica when on his annual school trip to help the locals build houses. He was always a creep and showed us horrendous videos of animal abuse that I still struggle with now. He got life in prison for what was found on his computer.

Where I live now, too many, arson, murders, rapes, assaults, a lot of gang on gang crime. A family with several young children were murdered by arson in the early 2000s, the man fled the country and hadn't been caught.

Recently a child was murdered by machete for no reason other than being from a different country.

Another child stabbed outside
a school after a row.

Another child killed round the corner due to gang warfare.

The list is endless.

So little happens here, I had to Google! There's been a smattering of attempted murders over the years, one or two actual murders - all perpetrators sentenced - and last month a woman was killed in a nearby town by (allegedly) her ex-partner 😡

The most notable event here was in 1809. We were the last town in England to subject a woman to the ducking stool. The contraption itself is on display at the church, and there are references to the damn thing all over the place. One of the pubs also had an original set of stocks on display, not sure it's still there.

Maybe the place is uneventful because people are still scared of public humiliation via wooden instruments of torture 😂

Can't believe this post is still here.
Too much all at once.
It's the context and it just doesn't feel right.
Sorry if it's just me.
Years of newspaper coverage in one edition! It's almost glorifying violence. Why?
Don't give these evil people any mention.
We don't need to be reminded.

You're not forced to read this thread?

Devondeer · 22/10/2025 16:44

Yes, I know and I haven't read it all, but just a quick scan at the start was enough!
It's the fact this thread exists that concerns me, and that others might find it and be triggered and distressed.

One from where I live now, well in the town literally next door, a young lad called Owen Harding disappeared in March 2020 after a fight with his mum about travel restrictions. He was last seen walking along the main road towards the Beach underpass… many feel like a tragic accident happened but I saw later on that his phone was showing he was in Bromley.

back in 2012 a 19 year old kid named Connor Saunders was assaulted resulting in his death the next day, 2 towns along outside a Tesco by a 14 year old who tried to claim self defence. Connor played for my local football club and he was childhood best friend of xfactor Frankie cocozza. His parents set up the Connor Saunders foundation. They were recently at DD’s school doing a workshop about the dangers of basically throwing punches.

@Devondeer, bad things happen in the world. Many people prefer to avoid thinking about it. This thread's title is enough to let those people know they might not like the content. They're free to ignore it, even hide it without opening it.

Femalefootyfan · 22/10/2025 16:52

Mid 70’s, in the town I grew up but no longer live in, a 9/10 year old girl went missing from outside her house, the same house I’d ridden past on my bike a little earlier. I was the same age as her at the time.
She was eventually found murdered and her uncle was her killer.

Then they - and you - are perfectly at liberty to hide the thread.

We are all grown adults here - no need for policing what we talk about, and everything has been on the news at some point anyway.

Mark Tildsley being abducted from the funfair in 1984. Absolutely awful.

Definitely was the worst thing to happen here. I remember the police coming round several times interviewing friends who were at the fair that night.

GinTonic123 · 22/10/2025 17:14

Also Mark Tildsley.

Levi Bellfield committing murders and attempting to murder other girls. Seeing the road next to my son's junior school cordoned off near the bus stop that Marsha McDonnell got off and was murdered shortly after. She's buried in our local church 😞

Awful. My ex husband's brother went to school with him, said he was a real wrong un then with creepy rumours about his upbringing. My dentist is near Twickenham Green where Amelie DelaGrange was murdered by him, I always feel very sad for her & her family when I'm in that area.

If I am triggered and distressed by something then I hide it.

I don't come into a thread, declare how awful it is, and then hang around to watch the updates and distress myself further.

The title is a clear indicator that some shocking things will be discussed.

Is that the Scottish one Nat Fraser?
