What’s the most shocking thing to happen in your neighbourhood/home town.

Had the police around earlier to fill in a quick questionnaire in regard to a serious incident that just happened locally. As we live on the main road they wanted to know if we saw anything, the usual. My mum then pipes up that’s she’s been through this years ago when they were investigating a murder in our home town (not our current hometown) I was shocked as I’m 37 and never heard of this murder in my whole life, granted I was 3 at the time but still… things like that usually spread for years. I then went down a rabbit hole, turns out the murder happened right across the street from our old estate. The woman murdered was called Penny bell. She was found stabbed more than 50 times in her car, they still haven’t caught the killer. I never knew this whole time and it kinda threw me.

Tony Martin. We lived in the next village and often saw him around, local shop, pub etc.

In my neighbourhood , which is very ‘naice’. A woman was sexually assaulted walking home at night

Things like that don’t happen here or so we thought….

Mark Tildsley being abducted from the funfair in 1984. Absolutely awful.

Nothing shocking anymore people murdered fairly regularly where I live and rape isn't that uncommon to the point it wouldn't be shocking

ReceiveIt · 21/10/2025 22:50

Mass shooting that included a 3 year old child 😢

A woman around here went missing in the 90s, everyone suspected her husband was involved but he had a rock solid alibi. He promised his kids he wasn't involved.

Many years later he was finally sent down for it along with a local farmer.

It's suspected that the husband arranged the kidnap and murder of her and the farmer fed her to the pigs. She wanted a divorce because he was violent and he didn't want to part with any money.

Absolutely rocked our small corner of the world, nothing like that ever happens here.

This horrific murder. Landlord was stabbed to death by tenant in a dispute over a game of chess. Body parts missing & believed to have been eaten by the killer. www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/13/ritualistic-killing-chess-dublin-landlord-castlerock

Moors murders 😢

Not in my home town, but a neighbouring city 10 miles away, where my aunt and uncle lived. One of my aunt’s friends, who I’d met at Ladies Nights In, was pushed down the stairs by her husband, because he was having an affair, but didn’t want to forego half the assets in a divorce. He claimed she fell by accident and the police believed him.

Years later, he and his second wife (the ex mistress) had an argument. She went to the police and told them, he had murdered his first wife!

Banaz Mahmod.

Utterly heartbreaking.

7 people killed in a terrorist bombing when I was a baby.
The best man at our wedding had a small scar from it. He was unbelted in a stationary car at the time of the bomb and thrown from his seat.

Arlene Fraser ?

Yes that's her.

Don't suppose anyone will ever know the whole truth of what happened.

Her poor kids.

Well at the moment the woman who faked having a newborn baby, lied about being pregnant, baby having a heart condition, giving birth etc then the “baby” died at 6 days old. The “baby” was a reborn doll.

Fernticket · 21/10/2025 23:11

Not my hometown, but the place I was living in at the time (Norfolk). A 14 year old girl went missing the night before Christmas Eve. Her body was found the day after Boxing day
To the best of my knowledge her killer has never been caught.

AnneLovesGilbert · 21/10/2025 23:12

There was a horrific murder a few years back. An elderly woman stabbed to death by her neighbour.

I've been seeing this all over tiktok its insane

worrisomeasset · 21/10/2025 23:16

It must have been about 1971, a man walked into our next door neighbour’s house and raped the woman who lived next door. I was 10 years old at the time and didn’t understand what had happened but I remember how scared my mum was afterwards. I remember reading the local newspaper’s account of the crime and being surprised that the report described the victim as “attractive”. I didn’t think she was attractive at all (she was a nice enough person, she just wasn’t conventionally pretty). I realise now that in the 1970s, all female rape victims were tittilatingly described as “attractive” in press reports. Horrible.

There’s a thread about the fake baby lady. Madness.

Where I live a dad killed his wife and kids and then himself. That was pretty shocking for a small town.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 21/10/2025 23:20

Mine hometown is always on 24 hours in police custody, so take your pick!

shellyleppard · 21/10/2025 23:20

A couple of years ago there was a young bsrber murdered two streets away from me. Young girl was murdered after her shift at the local chocolate factory about 5 years ago

MissSophiaGrace · 21/10/2025 23:20

Penny Bell was found in Gurnell leisure centre car park if I recall correctly. It's sad. Ealing as a borough has suffered many murders including Alice Gross.

SouthLondonMum22 · 21/10/2025 23:21

A boy was stabbed to death outside of one of the local schools by another teenager. This was a few years ago and happened in front of many children as it was home time.

More recently, a teen boy who came over from Syria was stabbed in the neck and later died. Again, in front of many people as it was in the middle of an afternoon in the town centre.

In 1997, a little boy was killed in an arson attack whilst sleeping at his aunts house which still remains a mystery to this day. Theres still posters up in several places asking for information about his murder.

(Not originally from South London).
