Had the police around earlier to fill in a quick questionnaire in regard to a serious incident that just happened locally. As we live on the main road they wanted to know if we saw anything, the usual. My mum then pipes up that’s she’s been through this years ago when they were investigating a murder in our home town (not our current hometown) I was shocked as I’m 37 and never heard of this murder in my whole life, granted I was 3 at the time but still… things like that usually spread for years. I then went down a rabbit hole, turns out the murder happened right across the street from our old estate. The woman murdered was called Penny bell. She was found stabbed more than 50 times in her car, they still haven’t caught the killer. I never knew this whole time and it kinda threw me.
what’s the most shocking thing to happen in your hometown?

Flixborough explosion, 1974. 28 died, a miracle it wasn't more, and 1800 houses damaged. Flixborough disaster - Wikipedia

My lovely local park was the place where a teenager dumped the body of an 11 year old boy he'd murdered.

Thats awful and so sad. Both are children.

RampantIvy · 22/10/2025 06:21

Just thought of another one in a village near me.

The Huskar Pit Disaster where 26 children died when a mine was flooded after a storm in 1838. A law was passed banning children from working in mines after that.

The killer of Sally Ann Bowman lived in my hometown. He was my friends boyfriend for a while and was a very odd character although of course we would never have suspected just how evil he really was!

MinnieMountain · 22/10/2025 06:29

@reptilemad1985 she’s a diagnosed psychopath according to the BBC report I read.

Strawberryorangejuice · 22/10/2025 06:38

An assassination attempt on an exiled politician from a foreign country in my home town growing up.

A shooting at the end of my road when I lived in London. An innocent bystander on a night out.

My current town, nothing of note really which is funny as it's by far the most down market place I've lived!

Brianna Ghey 😔 absolutely shocking.

TheGoldenGhouls · 22/10/2025 06:49

A local man murdered his wife and children, then used chemicals to set the house on fire to kill himself too. Neighbours saw the fire and broke in to help, finding the whole family dead. It was utterly traumatising for them.

Patricia Hall went missing here too. Amazon made a docuseries about her, The Confession.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 22/10/2025 06:51

Jacqueline Hill killed by Jack the Ripper.

Bikergran · 22/10/2025 06:57

Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, was arrested on a small private road running along the back of my old school, which is in an expensive "leafy suburb". Thankfully he was arrested before he could attack the woman in his car, otherwise no doubt the discovery of her body would have been the shocking incident.

labtest57 · 22/10/2025 07:00

The murder, by strangulation, of three teenage boys, initially put down to auto erotic asphyxiation, until the family pushed for further investigation. Years later, after the killer was convicted, he pleaded guilty to another murder, of a 14 year old boy, that had taken place a few years before.

Friendlyfart · 22/10/2025 07:06

Well I live in London so take your pick!!

10 year old Sarah Harper was kidnapped whilst walking just 100 from her house to the local shop in 1986. She was later found 71 miles away and had been violently sexually assaulted and murdered.

She had been taken by serial killer and paedophile Robert Black who was initially convicted for 4 primary aged girls he took and murdered but there were more.

The sickening end to his spree was when he was seen bundling another child into his van. Luckily the witness knew the child, told the Mother and she called the police. The van was spotted driving back down the road whilst the police were there and the van was halted.

The police officer who opened the back of the van and rescued the abducted child was the child's Dad! Sadly she had already been sexually assaulted but survived.

It is why round here parents who were a similar age to Sarah when she was abducted are more cautious about letting their children roam freely because the aftermath of her being taken was dire. This happened in Morley which is a Leeds suburb. Obviously Leeds being a major city has a lot of crime but Morley is a sweet little town with a bustling high street.

WillowTit · 22/10/2025 07:13

what a sobering thread

notmynamenamename · 22/10/2025 07:16

Two boys attacked rwo younger boys. Very similar to Jamie bulgar but thankfully the boys didn’t die.

A local teen disappeared about twenty years ago never found.

lots of manslaughter /murders, not a nice town.

A lion escaped from the circus and ate a boy on the allotments.

velvetcoat · 22/10/2025 07:20

When I was about 8 years old we lived in a small terraced road. The police came around one night and asked all of us (including me- as they said kids could be observant) if we had seen anything out of the ordinary. We all said no.

The man in the house directly opposite us had picked up another man from a club and bludgeoned him to death in that house. As cliche as it is, we all thought that man opposite was quiet and quite friendly.
