How long would 50k last you

Inspired by another thread

Assuming your household lost all income and savings tomorrow, but you were handed 50k to live on. Just for bills/ mortgage/ debts/ food and daily spending

If I lived comfortably I could get a year out of it,
with some scrimping and saving 18 months

I would last 8 months. Rent and bills swallow up a lot of it.

SliceofTosst · 21/10/2025 19:46

About 9 months. 12 months max scrimping.

EveryDayisFriday · 21/10/2025 19:48

Anything from 18m to 2yrs.

6 months

Happyhousehappyheart · 21/10/2025 19:48

Three years with being very cautious. No mortgage and no car, no pets.

DustyMaiden · 21/10/2025 19:50

2 years easily.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/10/2025 19:50

A year to 18 months probably. Assuming it's tax free.

Iguessicoulddothat · 21/10/2025 19:51

18 months at a guess, pretty much essentials only

space99 · 21/10/2025 19:52

Approx 2.5 years

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 21/10/2025 19:53

6 months with no cut backs, a little longer with. £25k per year just in mortgage payments

Statsquestion1 · 21/10/2025 19:55

assuming spending unnecessarily is cut back it would last us 14months

SchnizelVonKrumm · 21/10/2025 19:57

As this is Mumsnet, either 14 seconds or 185 years (delete as appropriate) Wink

Algen · 21/10/2025 19:57

12 months with no cutbacks, probably 2 years with scrimping

Frynye · 21/10/2025 20:00

Oh and yes it’s tax free!

If kids stayed in childcare and no cutbacks but no frills... 6 months max

If we pulled them out just over a year (childcare is around 4k pm)

Realrobin · 21/10/2025 20:01

2 years living fairly comfortably.
2.5 years if I cut back.

MellowPinkDeer · 21/10/2025 20:01

6 months at best.

user2848502016 · 21/10/2025 20:02

Probably about the same as you, definitely could do a year, 18m if careful

Namechange822 · 21/10/2025 20:02

2 years comfortably, 3 if I was really careful

Blanketenvy · 21/10/2025 20:03

2.5 years.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 21/10/2025 20:05

My take home pay after tax etc is about £29,000 so I could get 20-months without changing my spending habits but could probably make it last 2 years if I cut out the few luxuries I currently allow myself, takeaway and Netflix etc.

ThatNaiceMember · 21/10/2025 20:06

Three years but we don't have a mortgage or pets and one of our children is an adult who lives at home pays some rent.

Sandtheedges · 21/10/2025 20:06

It’s the same as I earn after tax per month roughly so a year I guess.

violetpink · 21/10/2025 20:08

9 months

RiseOfTheTeenyTinies · 21/10/2025 20:08

That’s my annual salary so over a year considering it’s tax free.
