Are Cake Sheds a thing in your town?

In the last few months there have been 9 cake sheds pop up in my small town - where people are selling homemade cakes from their front garden with an honesty box. According to their social media pages they are really popular, which is great as I love to support small businesses.
Trends like this fascinate me, and I wonder how long they will last once the novelty wears off.
Is it a current thing across the whole country?

Ewww, cake let in a box, and tou don't know who else has poked it. They might have just been picking up their dog poop 💩

theyre sealed up in containers, that can happen in supermarkets too

I don’t really know what a ‘cake shed’ is, but I’m not sure I’d fancy buying cakes made by a complete stranger with no food hygiene training.

Cakes are baked at 200 degrees. Basically kills everything anyway.

This is not a raw meat situation 😂

maudelovesharold · 21/10/2025 12:03

We get loads of boxes with people’s surplus apples, at this time of year, or other seasonal fruit/veg sometimes, left on a wall or by their front gates, but they don’t charge, they’re just to help yourself. Not come across a cake shed yet!

Where is this? Please say Kent!

There's a vegan one near me, but it's in Hampshire

No different to pre-packed cakes and biscuits on a shelf in M&S, anyone might have poked them too.

QuirkyHorse · 21/10/2025 12:06

My neighbour started one.
We live very rurally but people would swing by especially for cake.
Sadly someone came, took all the cake and didn't leave payment.
She shut it down after that ☹️

Nevereatcardboard · 21/10/2025 12:07

We have a Greggs down our road, does that count? 😊

My neighbour was inspected by the local council and had a 5 star hygiene rating, I would assume other cake sheds would have gone through the same red tape.

Springersrock · 21/10/2025 12:11

Yes, there’s a few around here. All are registered with the council and have a hygiene rating certificate displayed.

The also sell stuff like bunches of cut flowers from their gardens in the summer, tomato plants, etc.

They seem to be popular, they have Facebook pages and they quite often randomly show up in my feed and have usually sold out.

DH and I did the NC500 earlier this year and they seemed to be everywhere (not just cake sheds, but all sorts of bits and bobs) - we bought stuff for lunch and breakfast from them most days.

Everything is labelled just as it would be in a shop. It’s no different from going to a cafe and asking for a vegan brownie or a GF sponge.

My best friend is GF and we often stop by the local one when out with the dogs.

Being vegan or gluten free doesn't get you blue lighted to A&E if you eat the wrong thing.

Allergies here, I'd never touch a cake shed. We also won't eat at cafes that look a bit too homemade.

Fair enough, it’s still no different to a cafe in terms of licensing and inspections though.

How is it any different to cake in a cafe or shop?

TenGreatFatSquirrels · 21/10/2025 12:32

I’d love to set one up. I’m always baking and our freezer is full of cakes and cookies because of it. I want to get rid of it all too because quite frankly it’s not good for us and DH and I are getting chubby.

But I live in an urban cul-de-sac so it would be a bit weird

Tbf people don’t have access to the cake in shops or cafes… they’re behind the counter with staff observing you.

Pippatpip · 21/10/2025 12:33

We’ve got one. Been a couple of times. She opens it up at the weekends. QR codes, card payments and cctv all set up. Bit pricey but think it is a good idea.

Pippatpip · 21/10/2025 12:33

Ours is in an urban area - road from the station.

Not in supermarkets or lots of bakeries they’re not.

You know the cakes are in sealed bags, right?

No one is forcing anyone to buy something they don't want to, not for you that's fine

whatsit84 · 21/10/2025 11:44

Ooh I live nearby and didn’t know this was a thing!

To be honest it a while (years) since I was there, but there’s a footpath above the station going towards Hathersage and it goes along the backs of some houses towards a sort of chapel and outdoors centre. One of those houses used to leave out cake and flapjack and stuff 😊

AngelinaFibres · 21/10/2025 12:58

LadyKenya · 21/10/2025 09:51

I would buy eggs, and fruit. But no way would I buy homemade goods. I have not seen anything like this where I live, anyway.

No. Same as buying cakes from a random at a carboot sale. No thanks

Come on @CreteBound, you know that logic will not put off the ewwwww gerns, homemade disgusting crowd on MN.

I'm in an urban area too. I think a lot of them are. If you search 'cake shed' on Facebook you'll see some examples.

I'm sure that most have had hygiene inspections etc but I'd still be cautious 😬

This is a Google image but it’s this sort of things. For those who concerned about hygiene etc it’s no less hygienic than any cafe/food service place if the owner is registered with the council as they should be (and always are in my experience )

In fairness that kind of thing happens with shop bought cakes etc. too.
