Are Cake Sheds a thing in your town?

ChickpeasOnEarth · 21/10/2025 09:11

In the last few months there have been 9 cake sheds pop up in my small town - where people are selling homemade cakes from their front garden with an honesty box. According to their social media pages they are really popular, which is great as I love to support small businesses.
Trends like this fascinate me, and I wonder how long they will last once the novelty wears off.
Is it a current thing across the whole country?

Yes theres a few round here, but I'm fairly rural. One is from an established business, she bakes for farmers markets etc and some local shops stock her stuff too, its very good and I do buy from her shed

We have one near us. Fine until someone messes up the allergy info or uses something a bit out of date.

That happens in cafes and shops too. Most people are decent so i would buy from them.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/10/2025 10:18

I saw one on the Tissington trail. A while back. Never see. Them else where.

I live in North Devon and we have several.

There are quite a few egg stalls near us, some also have veg/fruit or honey. I've never noticed a cake stand though.

Surely the cakes might get nibbled on my rats or mice though? Or are they kept in very hard, plastic containers? 🤔

How are the rats and mice opening the latch on the door?

AlwaysADramaHadEnough · 21/10/2025 10:18

Yes. They have an honesty box and a sum.up card reader. All allergens listed. Last week it was stocked and advertised at 2pm. I went at 3.30 and was nearly all gone.

Dcs friends mum does one too we often use but it's 30 min drive , worth it though

IsThisLifeNow · 21/10/2025 10:24

And my favourite one is only open weekends for set hours, so I assume it only gets stocked for those times. It gets updated on social media so I can see whats in it before I go and it often sells out. She's a great baker and the stuff is good value, and I'm picky about where I spend my calories too!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 21/10/2025 10:24

Not heard of these. Cake Fridges are a thing in some places (thanks Shetland series 6 for making me aware of that 😂).

I see no problem with this. If their cakes are good with quality ingredients and they follow hygienic procedures, I hope they do well.

The only cultural import UK needs from US is their entrepreneurial spirit, which is exactly this new ‘trend’ is displaying.

There are a few near me, I haven't tried them but see them advertised in Facebook most weeks.

I like baking and rarely buy cakes so I'm not their target market but think it's a nice idea

Stade197 · 21/10/2025 10:30

I live in a small town in kent and there are a couple where I live that seem to do quite well, ive never visited them as they are a bit out of my way. Also a few where my mum lives that do well.

I did come across a post on Facebook yesterday from a different area that had a cake shed and the owner said she doesn't normally have any payment issues and that some people even over-pay but this week she was -£50 so I guess not everyone is so honest when paying!

I don’t really know what a ‘cake shed’ is, but I’m not sure I’d fancy buying cakes made by a complete stranger with no food hygiene training.

Have you never had a cake made by someone with no food hygiene training? Whether you know them or not shouldn't be a factor. Your mate with the fancy kitchen and good personal grooming may still not wash her hands and pick her nose while baking.

limescale · 21/10/2025 10:31

Not seen a cake shed around these parts (rural Essex).
Lots of fruit, eggs, honey.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 21/10/2025 10:33

Yes there’s a few round here (Kent coast). The ones I know of in this town are primarily used as a bit of a gimmick to advertise on FB an already existing business that offers catering for tea parties. There are three that applies to, gets their name out there, people try the new trend and spread the word. Not a bad idea for publicity but I don’t think it is a viable business in its own right.

Our local one is a professional baker who also supplies local cafes etc. So she is a complete stranger but also has food hygiene training. Most cakes are pretty low risk anyway unless cream etc is used.

Ifailed · 21/10/2025 10:35

I do buy rotted horse manure from a stables with an honest box, does that count?

Mirrorxxx · 21/10/2025 10:39

I know of a vegan cake shed

fruitfly3 · 21/10/2025 10:41

I’ve one about 20 mins away from my northern town. Also visited and bought from one in the Midlands a few months ago.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/10/2025 10:45

I want a cake shed near me! It’s not fair!!

A couple of months ago I was driving through a tiny village where I'd never been before and outside one of the houses three kids had set up a lemonade stand, which I'd never heard of anyone doing outside the US.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to stop or I'd have made a purchase but it was incredibly cute and I appulald their early entrepreneurial ways.

This. In spades!

Climbingthemountain · 21/10/2025 10:50

There’s quite a few near me, many have been around for years, we also have egg, veg, bread honesty boxes too. I love them.

thisishowloween · 21/10/2025 10:52

We have loads and they’re very popular. All council licensed and registered too.

buffyreboot · 21/10/2025 10:54

HesarealJacquelineHigh · 21/10/2025 10:06

There's a really popular one near us run by a well established baker. She used to have a cake shop but the costs got too high, so she now has a cake shed and it does really well. She accepts cash, card, has CCTV set up and has a 5* hygiene rating. Quite a few people have now done the same, but none of them do anywhere near as well as she does

Similar here, it’s nice to see what’s in there
