Are Cake Sheds a thing in your town?

ChickpeasOnEarth · 21/10/2025 09:11

In the last few months there have been 9 cake sheds pop up in my small town - where people are selling homemade cakes from their front garden with an honesty box. According to their social media pages they are really popular, which is great as I love to support small businesses.
Trends like this fascinate me, and I wonder how long they will last once the novelty wears off.
Is it a current thing across the whole country?

How are the rats and mice opening the latch on the door?

Latch and door???

I've only seen places with eggs and veg which are open shelves- no doors or latches, hence my worry about rats/mice.

I live in a small very rural village in Wales and we have a cake shed. She’s very organised and has a ring doorbell and QR code for payment.

We have one near us. Fine until someone messes up the allergy info or uses something a bit out of date.

My children have allergies and there is no way I would ever buy food in these kind of situations.

Quite a few near me. Mostly have hygiene ratings etc and are professional set ups. I think it’s great.

BunnyLake · 21/10/2025 11:11

Homemade cakes that I didn’t make myself are not my thing (too many ghastly ones people have brought in to work in the past).

What about the strict health rules of selling cakes, are they not bypassing those (unless they have a certificate up on the shed?).

I know of a vegan cake shed

Where is this? Please say Kent!

We have a egg and honey shed near us.
A few months ago some teens decided it would be fun to take the eggs and smash them around the property, on cars etc.

The ring door bell had some fantastic clear images of the teens. The owners posted it on the local FB page and the teens easily identified. 2 families ensured their teens apologised, cleaned up mess and were punished. One parent got gobby on FB on how they were just having fun and what do you expect leaving eggs around.

These cake sheds are a shed so they have a door. I presume they put the cakes out in the morning then take them in at night as well.

Yes ! I understand there is one in Paignton. I have not used it and I only found out as a post popped up on Facebook.

I had not until then heard of such a thing, tho I am well aware of eggs and fruit/veg elsewhere in England.

Many years ago ( 29/30 to be precise ) dh and I spent a week in Lincolnshire, and there was a pie stand at the bottom of a garden and yes we did buy a pie, it was a beef one and very good it was too. We also had some lovely green beans from a different ' stall ' that day too.

Belladog1 · 21/10/2025 11:20

I'm jealous. I live rurally in Suffolk and I have never seen any of these. I was born to eat cake (and drink champagne, but I doubt there are any champagne sheds).

catmothertes1 · 21/10/2025 11:20

There are a few in my small town. People post about it on my local facebook page and the comments are always good. I have reservations about it all but refrain from commenting on their posts. After all, nobody is forcing me from buying their stuff.

MaryToft · 21/10/2025 11:24

There's quite a few near me in Surrey.

Our local newspaper always does a feature on any new ones that pop up. We have differing opinions on what qualifies as news.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 21/10/2025 11:24

Not in central London... we do have a guy living in his car and a drug dealer though.

CinnamonCrunch33 · 21/10/2025 11:25

As a keen baker I’d love to do one but it’s not worth the risk if someone gets ill.

Yes -while a shed door and latch will definitely not keep a mouse out, I'm sure people don't leave cakes out overnight. The eggs in our local are kept in plastic sealed boxes.

RandomMess · 21/10/2025 11:27

One opened on our street and the baker seemed surprised it got reported to the council and they needed to follow all the food hygiene rules & regs.

How are the rats and mice opening the latch on the door?

With a magic key!

isthesolution · 21/10/2025 11:37

Not here. Eggs. Sometimes honey. I’ve never seen cake ones.

I’ve only seen them in the countryside. There’s one at the end of someone’s back garden in grindleford. Lots near me selling jam or eggs but not cake.

Ooh I live nearby and didn’t know this was a thing!

Happyholidays78 · 21/10/2025 11:45

Came across one walking in the lake district & the cake was delicious 😋

Bowling4soup · 21/10/2025 11:49

There’s 3 or 4 near me.

they do all have food hygiene certificates, registered with insurance etc as they were all home cake bakers first then started the cake shed as a way of selling

My children have allergies and there is no way I would ever buy food in these kind of situations.

Everything is labelled just as it would be in a shop. It’s no different from going to a cafe and asking for a vegan brownie or a GF sponge.

My best friend is GF and we often stop by the local one when out with the dogs.

cramptramp · 21/10/2025 11:56

Not round here. I’ve never heard of them.

Irritatedandsad · 21/10/2025 11:58

Ewww, cake let in a box, and tou don't know who else has poked it. They might have just been picking up their dog poop 💩

In fairness we are incredibly cautious what cafes and shops we buy from too.
I fully understand the risks of coeliac and that it can be very dangerous (and I am GF myself) but anaphylaxis to dairy and egg means we never take risks with other people's baking.
