Just curious.
I have really poor eyesight (-4.50) and have wore glasses full time since a child

That isn't classed as really poor eyesight.

I'm -9

That is poor eyesight.

Really? I was -20 and -20.5 till I had surgery.

RaraRachael · 17/10/2025 11:24

Did you have laser surgery @MontyDonsBlueScarf? I had a lower prescription than yours and was told I couldn't get it

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 17/10/2025 11:29

@RaraRachael I had Lasik 20 years ago. I don't regret it as it has taken me to -4 and -4.5 which is much more manageable, but it has given me issues with very irregular corneas and astigmatism. If I was considering it now I'd look into lens replacement which as I understand it, doesn't have the same issues. Happy to discuss further if you want to dm me.

I don't know off the top of my head, but poor!
I've worn glasses since the age of 4 and have needed them constantly. I've never had any interest in contacts. Glasses are just so easy, and at this point, they are just part of my face.
My right eye used to be quite a lot better than my left, but they've evened out with age.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 17/10/2025 08:21

I've always been severely myopic. My glasses lenses were so thick they distorted my depth perception so I wore contact lenses from my early teens.

When I reached age 50 my prescriptions were -11 and -13.5 and not many manufacturers made lenses that strong. I also needed reading glasses, prescription sunnies, prescription goggles and varifocals. It was confusing and very expensive. And 35 years of wearing contact lenses a12-15 hours a day, every day was damaging my eye health.

I was too short sighted for laser surgery but was a suitable candidate for private lens implants. It's similar to cataract surgery - my imperfect lenses were removed and custom made varifocal contact lenses were inserted into my eyes and positioned so they also corrected a mild astigmatism in one eye. It took about 2.5 hours under local anaesthetic, then a days downtime with blurry vision in a darkened room. I was driving (safely and with the surgeons approval) 3 days later.

That was 13 years ago. I now have perfect vision in both eyes. I use reading glasses or a magnifier for very close, intricate crafts but apart from that I no longer need glasses or contacts and never will.

it was expensive, £6000 in 2012 but I've saved that many times over on the cost of contacts and glasses but it's not just about the money. The miracle of being able to see without aids is priceless.

Wow. I would love to do this.

-10.5 and -11

Snap!

Jmaho · 17/10/2025 11:39

clary · 17/10/2025 08:52

yes this is what I have and it works very well. I think it might be more suitable for lower scrips than some of the ones on here tho

Can I just ask please, does this only work if your eyes are different? I was naughty and didn't go for an eye test for well over 2 years. They then upgraded both my glasses and lenses to -5 and now I need reading glasses. But both eyes are same prescription so not sure its work for me?
They did mention varifocal lenses but reviews aren't great

MO0N · 17/10/2025 11:45

It's a while since I was tested but I think I'm around -4/5
I'm very interested in replacement lens surgery!

drspouse · 17/10/2025 11:47

-7 ish and -5 ish. Mostly a contact lens wearer.

My scrip is the same in both eyes -2.5 now (has been higher but always both the same).

I have had a reading lens in my left eye for several years now - my latest scrip has it at -1. So it’s not a great correction for distance vision, but my right eye dominates so it’s totally fine for driving, watching a film. But it means I can read a book and actually the computer screen in the day when wearing lenses.

MoreIcedLattePlease · 17/10/2025 12:09

-2.75 and -4.25 with mild astigmatism.

Cannot for the life of me see without glasses/contacts. Prefer contacts generally, but stick to glasses at home because it's a bit quicker/easier.

thornbury · 17/10/2025 12:52

-6. Life has improved immeasurably since I switched from standard to multifocal contact lenses 3 years ago. I've been wearing lenses for over 40 years 🤓

HostaCentral · 17/10/2025 13:02

-8 in both eyes, and +2 for reading glasses, which I get online. Mostly wear contacts, recently updated my proper glasses, soooo expensive, I could only afford one pair. Special offers make zero difference as the cost is all in the lense.

NotMeNoNo · 17/10/2025 13:05

About -5.25 both eyes with +2 reading add. Worn glasses since age 10. I don't have a problem with doing make up, but I have to be really close to the mirror. I do have contact lenses for sports/events/holidays, but mostly wear glasses day to day as I need my good varifocals for screen work.

macshoto · 17/10/2025 13:18

-3.5 / +2.25 (reading)
-3.0 / +2.25 (reading)
Varifocals, which I have worn for about 7 years now. Worn glasses since I was 6/7 in primary school. Wore contacts in my mid 20’s - early 30’s, but comfortable back in glasses now.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 17/10/2025 07:24

-12.5, with astigmatism. My eyesight is still deteriorating and my glasses need updating annually, and they’re so expensive.

Really wish I could afford the lense replacement surgery, but when I looked into it it was £16000 per eye. 😖

I paid 8000 for both in optical express this year. 9000 without blue light discount.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 17/10/2025 11:22

Really? I was -20 and -20.5 till I had surgery.

I meant that -4.50 isn't poor eyesight.

-9 is on the cusp of being legally blind.

I really feel for you being -20. It's such a curse.

Glasses44 · 17/10/2025 11:04

Lol ok

Lol hilarious.

Maybe I should look into it again, this was a few years ago, and it’s costing me a fortune In lenses and glasses anyway.

Is -9 really on the cusp of being legally blind? I’m -12.5 and no one’s ever mentioned that.

Londonmummy66 · 17/10/2025 13:47

-7.5 in both - come down from -8 and -8.5 in recent years. I wear contacts pretty well all the time (I know I know...). Life is simpler now they are both the same prescription. I hate wearing glasses because they never totally cover your field of vision so there is always a bit beyond the glasses that is blurry. And I can't run in them.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 17/10/2025 14:18

-2.75 in one eye and -2.50 in the other eye, also with severe astigmatism

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 17/10/2025 15:46

For those asking about swimming, I wear goggles from https://goggleyed.co.uk/ which are made to 'near enough' your prescription so are less than £20. They are more than adequate for swimming, reading the pool clock and notices etc. I got them after they were recommended on another thread and have been very pleased with them.

Welcome To Goggleyed - Goggleyed

Prescription swimming goggles for short or long sightedness to suit the customer. Lenses with the same or a different power for each eye provided as calculated.

One of the joys is being able to go in shop and buy cheap pretty sunglasses when I see them.

girljulian · 17/10/2025 16:18

I'm -8 in each eye and have been since I was about 14. For some reason as a teenager I insisted on walking around without my glasses on, but it did have one benefit which was that I was able to sing in a band and not be worried about the audience because I couldn't see a thing. The John Lennon approach.
