Just curious.
I have really poor eyesight (-4.50) and have wore glasses full time since a child

This is something i got on here. Maybe a year ago. I had very poor vision and couldn’t wear contact lenses. There was a thread about things that improved your life. And one thing was replacement lens surgery. So i got it. It wasn’t without difficulty. But i now have better than 20 20 vision both far and near. And vision couldn’t be better. Cost 8000 or so.

Toxictownie · 16/10/2025 23:05

Contacts are -11

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2025 23:14

I'm around -8.

I know it wasn’t the question and that lens replacement surgery and spending upwards of 8k isn’t for everyone. But I’m very glad i done it. I get up in morning look for my glasses and realise i don’t need them. I realise i’m lucky. I swim and play ball sports. It’s helped my difficult life.

Namechanged555 · 16/10/2025 23:18

I will bow out now. And let people come and say -11 or -8. I don’t know what those are but I’m sure i should.

PrivateMusic · 16/10/2025 23:19

-4.something in both. Only wear glasses now but I hate them. I’ve trialled so many pairs of contacts but can’t find any that actually feel comfortable. Would love laser but can’t afford it.

Teaforthetotal · 16/10/2025 23:19

@Namechanged555 that sounds great.

I'm -5 so not as short-sighted as many responses but still can't see much without glasses.

FluffMagnet · 16/10/2025 23:19

-10.25 in one eye, slightly less in the other (does now mean I get the NHS "assistance", not that it really helps at all, think I get a free eye test). Swimming is my biggest issue

Thanks for sharing about it, definitely going to look into it

@Namechanged555 I have been pondering getting some kind of eye surgery but not sure if I'd be eligible at -8.5 and 56 years old. I'd be really interested to hear more from anyone who's done it and if it was worth it.

I don’t know what my prescription was. I’d have to go look it up. But it was very strong short sighted. Ie couldn’t see distances. Very good close up, anyway i am 64 and got it done in august. I now have totally amazing vision. I just don’t want to sound like an advert. You can’t get laser surgery beyond about 45 or so. I got lens replacement which is same as cataract surgery. In both eyes. NHS reduction would have been 9200 was 8200. That’s all i can say really. I love the freedom. I do running, golf, swimming. It’s very freeing. Beforehand i was paying at least 500 for a pair of glasses with the prescription thinning, etc. now i can buy any pair of sunglasses for nothing much. It will save me in long term.

Namechanged555 · 16/10/2025 23:36

If you have health insurance e.g. Benenden they would cover it i think. But if you are 50s needs to be lens replacement not laser.

I have recently bought prescription swimming goggles from Specsavers. They are marvelous. I can't remember whether they cost £30 or £45, but it was a drop in the ocean to the £915 cost of a pair of glasses and some prescription sunglasses for my -11 varifocals with ultra thin lenses . (With discounts, free sight test, two for one frames, and an NHS voucher for a complex prescription, I paid £518.

clary · 16/10/2025 23:41

-2.5 in both eyes. A few years ago it was -3.5.

But for my contact lenses I have -1 in my left eye (I am right-eyed) so I can read and see the computer without reading glasses.

I love my dailies and won't be without them now, even tho they cost me £30 pm.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 16/10/2025 23:42

-5.25 and -5.75, with +2. I’ve worn varifocals since I turned 45 and I love them.

DidntHaveTheLatin · 16/10/2025 23:42

+1.25 and +3.75 and I wear glasses or contacts every day, usually glasses now I WFH a lot.

This thread seems to show that nearsightedness is much more common than the opposite, which I hadn't realised!

Severe · 16/10/2025 23:43

I was -11/-12 most of my life and started wearing contacts aged 8 - hard, not soft as that would apparently slow down the deterioration.

I wore them for almost 40 years until early cataracts made it necessary for me to have lens replacement surgery. it truly is life changing. I have to use reading glasses now (although I was already starting to need them, like most of my peers in our late forties), but it’s incredible not to need to use contacts or glasses otherwise.

I’m enjoying my good sight while it lasts. Family history is not good and the early cataracts are not filling me with confidence for the future…

ShrimpyMcNeat · 16/10/2025 23:44

-13 in both eyes. Blind as a bat basically, without correction you could be stood two feet away from me and i'd be unable to tell who you were by sight.

Sub2Mumma · 16/10/2025 23:45

-3.75 and -3.5 prefer my 👓 over lenses but needs must when going swimming 😂

That isn't classed as really poor eyesight.

I'm -9

That is poor eyesight.

whatsit84 · 17/10/2025 06:49

Not as bad as some here, mine is -3.5 and -4.5, I do sometimes not wear them around the house first thing but life is much easier being able to see clearly.

reluctantbrit · 17/10/2025 06:55

-7.5 in both eyes plus +1.5 for reading so I wear verifocals and extra reading glasses for work and longer reading.

I hate contact lenses, never got used to them, I also have quite dry eyes.

Wearing glasses since I am 12.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 17/10/2025 06:56

-7.5

HollyhockDays · 17/10/2025 06:57

-11.5 and -10.5! I wear contacts and have glasses. I see better for most things in my contacts but will put my glasses on to read at night.

Yes I was thinking the same! +4.25 and +3.75 here!
