Is a man paying for "her" nails really a thing?

I don't mean in realtionships with generally shared finances, but in newish relationships.

"A man" should contribute to the costs of her looking the way she needs to for a date?

I've no odea what I've clicked on to get this in my feed, but all of a sudden my FB is full of memes about good/bad men who do/don't pay for nails.

@AliceMaforethought Guessing you're single? 😆

I have never asked a man out, and so if he asks, he pays. I might offer to go halves on the second date, but never on the first. It's called being treated like a lady, something which is derided as old fashioned but actually isn't as bad as people make out.

No, it's called being a cheeky fucker.

Or a ponce if there's no second date.

My parents would be ashamed of me if I ever thought a man should pay for me. They would think it was entitled, selfish and wrong. Genuinely.

Lavender14 · 13/10/2025 23:15

I know someone who's boyfriend does this - he transfers her the money every 4 weeks to get her nails done. I found it odd.

And mine would be ashamed of me if I was such a pushover as to not expect a man to pay for me on the first date.

What does that even mean? 'Ponce' makes no sense in this context.

Of course it does.

A ponce in this context is someone who gets others to give them things for free.

You get some people who'll go to the pub with no money for example, and ponce drinks off people, or fags or food etc.

Apparently it is in rural Wales - a contestant on Married At First Sight did this and his partner was not impressed because it smacks of men making sure their women are tarted up just the way THEY the men accept. It seems a lot of people think it is completely normal to do as she got a lot of hate for it at the time. It's not something I'd want a man to point out I need doing but if I chose to get mine done and they wanted to pay, that's a different vibe.

everychildmatters · 13/10/2025 23:40

@AliceMaforethought You're quite the feminist.

How is paying your own way in the world being a 'pushover' - you're literally not making sense now. I mean your actual words do not fit together.

Where in Wales? Sorry I don't watch it. But it makes me cross given that I am Welsh and thought these attitudes went out with the ark...

I actually didn't pay attention to where exactly but he grew up on a farm and his mum and sister apparently think it's a very normal thing for the men to do too.

Oh gross. I apologise on behalf of my nation - hopefully they are fairly unique in their outlook.

It seemed to create a lot of ill feeling towards the woman on the show (which is also poorly edited and seems to relish in making women look like monsters to be honest) but a few of us were sitting there watching thinking WTF. Imagine your bloke being like "er love, your nails look rough, I guess you need me to pay for them to look nice again". She's a feminist too so it obviously hit differently and people thought she was a prize bitch for saying she didn't want him to tell her to get her nails done, which was a fair comment from her I thought!

I would love a guy to pay for my nails. I don't want to pay for them and if he does.... Great.

Grace let's him pay for everything

Iwilladmit · 13/10/2025 23:58

Sooo I take it no-one has seen the trend where the guy pays for the nails and the woman gets them painted the same shade of pink as his, erm, tip?

Im happily married with a joint account but if I was single and dating I’d be happy for a guy to pay for my nails.

everychildmatters · 13/10/2025 23:59

Eurgh! A guy paying for you to get pretty nails to look nice for him! Absolutely vile.

No - a guy paying for something that otherwise you are going to pay for anyway. It’s a gift!

everychildmatters · 14/10/2025 00:02

@Iwilladmit Pay for them yourself!!

But if someone offers me a gift and I want the gift - what’s the issue?

You don't want to pay for them? So you're cheap?

Well I know you're cheap because you let random people pay for cosmetic enhancements... do you work, do you have the ability to pay for these things yourself?

FirstCuppa · 14/10/2025 00:24

@Arlanymor I should add the poster saying "Grace" is talking about MAFS as the feminist is called Grace, so this is one of the ones who thought she was mental...
