Scared.. text from gp. Tell me I'm being silly

Went for bloods on Friday, text first thing today from GP to ring and make a routine appointment to discuss results. Appointment is today over the phone. Don't know when they will ring. My anxiety is through the roof and my mind is doing over time. Waiting for the call seems like a lifetime. Tell me I'm being silly and overthinking! 😩😩

Try not to worry. I had the same and it was my iron levels as usual.

MyDeftDuck · 13/10/2025 15:13

You’re being silly and overthinking!

samarrange · 13/10/2025 15:26

Most likely there are one or two numbers that are borderline, and the doctor will be considering a possible deficiency, or maybe you're eating too much salt or something like that. It wouldn't be "please wait for a routine appointment" if anything was off the chart.

If you can get the results, they are usually not too hard to read. The ones that are out of normal range probably have a star by them. Obviously use Google or AI with care when looking those up, but when I had two values with stars after my last blood test it basically said "X being 15% over is no big deal as long as Y is in range", which it was.

I received a text like this - it was just a call to s discuss results in the end and make a further referral.

Was a relatively minor issue.

If you have the NHS app and have given permission you can see test results on there.

I echo this suggestion

Hellogoodbyehowdoyoudo · 13/10/2025 15:37

I hope you have had your results and your mind is at rest. I hate anxiety. It's awful.

TwinklyFawn · 13/10/2025 16:57

Don't panic op. I get this every time i have a blood test. It means that there is a boarderline result. My iron was a bit low in the summer. I wasn't eating properly at the time as i had a tooth out a few days before my blood test.

VickyEadieofThigh · 13/10/2025 17:41

I'm of the age now where I get annual, routine blood tests. One of them in June was a concern, so I was called back a month later to get another. It was perfectly normal, no further action.

I should hope that they wouldn't deliver any devestating news via the telephone!! Which might work in your favour. I'm sure they'd have to tell you in person if there was a diagnosis likely to cause distress.

I won't chastise you for overthinking. I hate phone calls and especially waiting for them.

Whatever the results are, you've been tested and taken the first steps towards getting treatment, which is a positive factor of the case.

Pour yourself a glass of wine (or 3) and get engrossed in a meaty thread on here.

Remember thousands of people receive blood test results everyday, you are not alone.

Sending kind thoughts

This happened to me once. I was so worried!

Turned out to be Vitamon D deficient.

When my MiL had leukaemia the GP literally knocked on her door and sent her to hospital.

I feel for you OP. Don’t let your thoughts run away x

@Mammothisland unfortunately my GP has recently merged with another and no one can access their notes yet. How annoying!!

Honestly - they’ve just asked for a routine appointment. They did the same for my daughter recently. Turned out she was anaemic, low on Vit D (and calcium and folate… the list goes on). They’ve prescribe iron and vit D initially, but wanted a chat about diet (more dairy), getting out in the sunshine even though it is the Autumn, ie general lifestyle changes, and the fact that they’d like to retest in 3m at which point they may also prescribe for the other deficiencies. They felt it was a conversation that was better done in person than over the phone.

I am sure you have nothing to worry about!

Hedgehog93 · 13/10/2025 20:08

I work at a doctors and this would mean something has come back slightly out of range - nothing sinister or major at all. Our routines are weeks away. If anything is urgent it gets acted on on the day as the lab call through with urgent bloods. I imagine low vitamin or iron something like that. Also must have been a reason for gp ordering bloods so follow up? Request a copy of bloods at reception or emailed if can’t see on app. Nothing to worry about. Trust me I have this convo daily. X

@inamo I had my gallbladder removed in feb and recently I've started to get a lot of aches and pains where my gallbladder used to be x

Just to say, it's still possible to develop gallstones after your gallbladder is out, and for them to get stuck in the bile duct. I had this happen to me, about 6 months after having the gall bladder out. In my case, I then had a 15-min procedure under sedation where the stone was endoscopically shoved out and the opening of the bile duct widened slightly. So if you have renewed symptoms, it's worth getting checked out!

Ferrfoxache · 13/10/2025 20:56

I had bloods taken after experiencing some neuropathy on my foot. (Like a freezing cold sensation on the front) Was worried it was Diabetes or circulation issues. Got a text telling me to contact the doctors to discuss my results, turned out all he wanted to do was tell me i had a Folic Acid deficiency and he was writing me a prescription !! Talk about sh##ting myself for nothing !!

OP, I've had loads of texts like this. It means some of your results are abnormal, but that abnormality could be something really small or minor.

In fact, of all the times I have received a text to discuss my blood results with the GP, I can't even remember now what they were in relation to... that's because the results were minor things that could be resolved.

Wait until the results come back. If it's something serious, then deal with it then. But no point in worrying without knowing.

Jggg · 13/10/2025 21:02

If it was something really bad they would call you to either tell you go to ED ASAP or arrange you to be seen in hospital within few days in hot clinic or for further tests. Routine GP appointment sounds more like beginning of something chronic, hard to speculate without knowing what specific tests they did and what medical issues/medications you already have/are using.

400rider · 13/10/2025 21:31

Hope everything turned out to be okay and your anxiety was unnecessary, but totally understandable.

Gandalfsthong · 13/10/2025 21:45

I have these texts if my thyroid levels have changed following my six monthly (or so) blood tests. You might also have a deficiency? I’m sure it’ll be alright, good that they are following up.

Echobelly · 13/10/2025 21:52

Yes, the whole point of them saying it is a routine appointment is to let you know it's not anything alarming; glad you are feeling better OP.

XWKD · 13/10/2025 21:56

Did they call you?

MsAmerica · 13/10/2025 21:59

No idea why you'd be so anxious, in the absence of any specific worry. Last time I had a call like that, it was just something like "Cholesterol is slightly elevated, but otherwise everything is fine."

LillyPJ · 13/10/2025 22:31

I'm sure you'll be fine. My blood test had a few red exclamation marks on the printout and I was quite scared. Then the GP went through it and there was nothing to worry about at all. Take a deep breath and wait until you've had the chat.

paddyclampster · 13/10/2025 22:47

What did they say, OP?

justasking111 · 13/10/2025 22:59

I got a text out of the blue. A trainee GP going through my notes noticed I needed folic acid. They were waiting at the pharmacy.

I still get niggles from a phantom gallbladder 15 years later.

smallglassbottle · 13/10/2025 23:07

I have to go to the hospital assessment unit tomorrow about the pancreatitis.
