Scared.. text from gp. Tell me I'm being silly

Went for bloods on Friday, text first thing today from GP to ring and make a routine appointment to discuss results. Appointment is today over the phone. Don't know when they will ring. My anxiety is through the roof and my mind is doing over time. Waiting for the call seems like a lifetime. Tell me I'm being silly and overthinking! 😩😩

This has happened to me several times.

Usually it means my B12 levels are dipping again and I need supplements. Once it was to say my kidney function was a little low and to re-test in 3 months - it was normal then.

If they say 'routine' it probably just means something needs a little tweak. So try and and not worry!

JillyJoy · 13/10/2025 12:01

When I had a result that really was way off, it was the doctor herself on the phone, not txt or receptionist.
aaand . . . breathe.

Another post here advising you to log on to your NHS app and view your results.

I got called on a thursday evening to book me in for a phone appointment on easter sunday to discuss some test results. So i was panicking from thursday evening to my phone appointment on sunday to be told everything came back fine??? Don’t jump to worst case scenario!!

Lindy2 · 13/10/2025 12:09

A routine telephone call generally means there's something a bit outside normal range on the blood test but generally nothing very major. They've have been more urgent in talking to you if there was something very significant. Low vitamin D or low iron are quite common results.

Have a look on the NHS app. I got all the pages of my blood test on there with details of the normal range v my results. It was quite fascinating actually. I also typed the results into Chatgpt and got extra feedback from there. If you don't have the app you can ask for the results to be emailed to you.

Hopefully the doctor call you soon and all will be sorted.

@inamo I had my gallbladder removed in feb and recently I've started to get a lot of aches and pains where my gallbladder used to be x

If you have had an op like this it is very common to have some of your markers off while your body adjusts. The doctor will need to treat this so you don't become more unwell.

DramaLlamacchiato · 13/10/2025 12:10

I had this after blood tests except I had to go and see the GP. I had a vitamin B12 deficiency and slightly raised cholesterol (that’s now fine). I’m sure if it was anything major they would have seen you more
urgently

HermitageWay · 13/10/2025 12:11

Yes don’t worry! Really bad results - they would ask for an urgent appointment face to face, really abnormal - the GP would call you and likely would have called you Friday, semi-abnormal - would likely have also called. Just a little off (like low Iron etc) - will txt for a routine appointment. Don’t worry I got this a few years ago and they just wanted to tell me over the phone my bloods were totally normal. I have a great GP surgery and after I calmed down I realised it was because I was so anxious about the results they were actually trying to reassure me but in turn terrified me!! Good luck and keep us updated! X

bluetongue · 13/10/2025 12:12

I recently got called back for an urgent appointment after a blood test followed by a genetic test for a rare blood cancer. When I got to the surgery for my appointment it was deserted as it was the doctors’ lunch break and My GP had squeezed my appointment in when she was usually at lunch. After all that it turns out I’m fine and my wonky results were back to normal 🤷‍♀️

if it’s a standard Telehealth appointment I’m sure it will be fine.

DoAWheelie · 13/10/2025 12:13

This is the message I always get when my bloods are fine or I just need a simple medication change. The odd time it's been something worse I was contacted with a time and date for a face to face appointment.

OhNineFiftyFour · 13/10/2025 12:18

When this happened to me it was because I had low iron. It's much more likely to be something easily manageable than anything serious.

Routine... if says routine there is nothing to worry about at all. If they were concerned, you'd be offered an appointment asap.

Years ago I had a letter from the blood donor people telling me not to give blood again. I had several hours thinking I had AIDS - it was the early 90s. But no, I was low in iron. Panic over.

I got a call back from the blood bank after my first and only donation to do a HIV as someone who received my blood had tested positive and apparently had no idea where they caught it from. My test was negative but it was still a bit stressful.

DesperatelySeekingHelp · 13/10/2025 11:38

As they have said book a routine appointment it won’t be anything serious

Agree. When the doctor phoned my husband the day after his blood test and told him to go straight up to an and e that was serious. So I think a routine appointment direction would fall into the something is not at the right level so we need to talk about how we sort that.

Lougle · 13/10/2025 12:23

Just to reassure you, I was called at 01.30 am on a Saturday morning by NHS 111 when my daughter's blood results from a test on Friday afternoon had been processed. I was instructed to take her straight to A&E. She was fine, but they didn't wait until Monday morning for her GP to see her results. The lab phoned NHS 111, who phoned me. If the result of a test is really worrying (such as very low clothing or a high/low potassium), they will send a doctor/paramedic out to the house if the phone isn't answered.

TTCbaby2x · 13/10/2025 12:27

@Mammothisland unfortunately my GP has recently merged with another and no one can access their notes yet. How annoying!!

Please try not to worry. Several times in recent years I have had some serious health concerns for which I've had to have tests. In most cases it was a routine appointment follow-up like you have had. But in two cases I got a telephone call saying "you need to go to hospital straight away - go to XYZ ward as soon as you can; they have a bed ready for you". It was kidney failure on one occasion and suspected sepsis on the other (both now thankfully OK). As the other helpful posters have said. I'm sure they wouldn't abandon you to a routine appointment if it was anything of major concern.

I hope all will be well. Let us know how you get on and best wishes to you. x

Edited to say - I don't think you're being silly. It's quite natural to be concerned. x

Sprintingforataxi · 13/10/2025 12:29

Blood sample collection for labs is at 11am where I live (NW). If there’s anything significant the lab contacts the GP that afternoon who immediately phones the patient. It really is that fast.
Try not to worry. Best of luck.

Bumblebee72 · 13/10/2025 12:30

In many ways if you had tests to investigate something it is more helpful for you that those tests show something rather than nothing. Hopefully they will point to what is needed to solve the aches and pains.

Mitochondriapowerhouse · 13/10/2025 12:35

My mum had a blood test on a Friday morning - at midnight she was woken by an emergency care worker knocking on her door and she was admitted to hospital. She had dangerously low levels of potassium apparently
I had a blood test last week and have been contacted by the surgery a couple of days later to make a routine appointment and that is because of a rise in lipids so they might suggest moderations in my diet or to take statins

Rosieposy89 · 13/10/2025 12:38

Both my mum and sister had potentially life threatening blood test results. They were phoned straightaway by a doctor. This is just routine

NortieTortie · 13/10/2025 12:38

I had that last year and it was low vitamin d - Dr just wanted me to take some high dose vitamin d for a while and a daily supplement after that.

Rainymoondays · 13/10/2025 12:57

Make a routine appointment means it’s nothing considered urgent. Usually a need for a follow up to monitor, or to say, ‘they’re all normal, what’s the next step’ or to tell you, you’re low in Vit D or something. Routine appointments can be up to two or three weeks away.

@inamo I had my gallbladder removed in feb and recently I've started to get a lot of aches and pains where my gallbladder used to be x

Speaking from personal experience - my guess would be that the blood test has revealed elevated ALT or bilirubin suggesting that there’s a gallstone still trapped in the bile duct. Sometimes when they remove the gallbladder a stone has previously escaped and remains in the bile duct after the surgery, which can a) hurt a lot and b) disrupt liver function a bit. If so, they can usually do a scan to confirm and remove it easily without surgery (with an ERCP, involving sedation and a camera thingy down your throat. So try not to worry!

Your gp shouldn’t affect your blood tests on the NHS app itself
