Scared.. text from gp. Tell me I'm being silly

Went for bloods on Friday, text first thing today from GP to ring and make a routine appointment to discuss results. Appointment is today over the phone. Don't know when they will ring. My anxiety is through the roof and my mind is doing over time. Waiting for the call seems like a lifetime. Tell me I'm being silly and overthinking! 😩😩

I get loads of these. It says “routine”, so there’s nothing seriously awry. It might just be some bloods are slightly out of kilter. My GO says it’s normal for bloods to go up and down and be out of range at times. They’ll likely redo the bloods in a few weeks.

LadyGreyTeaforMe · 13/10/2025 13:01

A routine appt doesn't sound as if it's urgent.

If it was urgent you'd be told to come in now, on the same day.

Try not to worry. I had this and it was that my cholesterol was high. Just told me to watch my diet.

I know two people who had routine blood tests and they found something very serious - both were phoned and told to go immediately to A&E for further testing. So the fact it’s just a GP call suggests something less serious.

🤞🏼 they call really soon.

Sartre · 13/10/2025 13:31

I had this once, I remember being absolutely terrified waiting for their call back. I had slightly low vitamin D. If it’s urgent, they ask you to go in.

@Mammothisland unfortunately my GP has recently merged with another and no one can access their notes yet. How annoying!!

If your hospital uses MyChart you can get the results directly and a day before your GP.

The NHS app may well have them on.

Locutus2000 · 13/10/2025 13:33

As others have said, if there was a serious problem they would have called you to discuss or make an urgent appointment.

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 13/10/2025 13:34

You're being silly and overthinking 😁. You don't know what it is yet, it could be just that you need iron tablets for awhile. Make a cuppa tea to ground yourself!

I also had aches and pains after my gallbladder was removed two years ago. I'd already had an ERCP as had a 1.2cm stone trapped in my bile duct and was forever having to get blood tests as my billirubin was high, then it was fine, then it was high.... Etc.

I dreaded the pain coming back loads and loads and it was this lower left hand side nagging pain so I was convinced I had more trapped stones, even though my gallbladder had been removed.

Went back to see specialist - turns out I have moderate diverticular disease which was a fun diagnosis. It has made it much easier to manage now that I know what it is.

My Billirubin is still really high - turns out it's probably Gilberts syndrome. Very benign and just means I'm very sensitive to hormone changes and can't tolerate alcohol very well. Thankfully doesn't affect my life at all.

As you've already had pre op bloods and no doubt blood tests quite recently - I doubt it's anything serious but really hope you get to the bottom of your pain soon and the GP gives you a ring soon so you feel less anxious.

Barton10 · 13/10/2025 13:41

I had this and was told if it was sinister they would ring and make an urgent apportionment. Mine was because my iron levels were low and I needed medication to sort it out. Please don't worry - I know how you feel I wasted a week stressing over nothing

It will very likely be something that you don't need to worry about @TTCbaby2x Probably a shortage of iron or folate in your blood! Some tablets will fix it. Keep us posted. Smile

mindutopia · 13/10/2025 14:00

When I had this, the GP literally rang me herself as soon as results came back the next day. It was because an inflammatory marker came back elevated and because of my symptoms, they wanted me to come back for a blood test for coeliacs which she hadn’t included in the original bloods. It wasn’t like an actual urgent thing, just she wanted to get it done quickly. I don’t have coeliacs btw. It turns out I have another gut issue that is chronic, but not life threatening in any way. Just more an annoyance that means I need to watch what I eat.

That's bad! I have online access to my medical records and test results, and if there is anything that isn't explained online (tests are detailed as to what they show by the NHS) I ask ChatGPT which gives me a report which includes suggestions for what I should ask my GP about.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 13/10/2025 14:02

Try not to panic - if it were something really serious they would make an urgent appt. DC's results were abnormal and potentially serious (it was ok thankfully) and they told us to go to A&E to repeat the tests immediately. Good luck

Tink3rbell30 · 13/10/2025 14:06

Wow a routine app after a blood test is 2 weeks in my surgery, same day is lucky.

catherinewales · 13/10/2025 14:09

Any news yet? I know it’s worrying waiting but if it was really serious and they required you to go to hospital they would have just called you but they’ve made an appointment so hopefully it’s nothing to serious xx

welshgirl2025 · 13/10/2025 14:11

please dont worry. If he has asked you to make a routine appt it means there is nothing serious. If there is a problem eg low iron it can be easily sorted. Last bloods I had I was phoned the same day to say to go straight to hospital and was on a drip within one hour.

Try not to worry, i had a full blood test a few months back, got a call to discuss the results turns out im low in vit D and also low on calcium , now have to take daily supplements to bring it up
A call is normal they do it with every blood test :)

PatsFishTank · 13/10/2025 14:12

If they've asked you to go to your GP, it won't be serious. Unfortunately I've also had this in the last week and was asked to go to a regional heamatology centre urgently because my results really are problematic.

JohnBullshit · 13/10/2025 14:17

Hope they're calling you soon. I had a message following routine blood tests last week to make a phone appointment 'within the next four weeks', which obviously doesn't scream urgency, yet somehow my anxiety has converted it into yet another thing to be avoided, and I'm on my third day of excuses about why today isn't a good day to make an appointment. This isn't normal for me; I am usually a big fan of getting things out of the way. So I applaud you for making the call in the first place.

TheLemonLemur · 13/10/2025 14:32

I had this 2 weeks i hav low iron and b12 please try not to worry lots of very minor things show in bloods

smallglassbottle · 13/10/2025 14:53

I currently have very high amylase and am awaiting a GP callback. I looked up my results on the nhs app if that's any help.

N0Tfunny · 13/10/2025 14:55

I once had an urgent problem show up in a blood test for one of my children. The GP personally phoned me at home several times until she got me about 630pm. I had to take my child for hospital treatment the next day.

If it was urgent they would PHONE not text. And they would tell you to come in TOMORROW, not to make a routine appointments for a few weeks time.

DirtyMartinii · 13/10/2025 14:57

Really extreme results would be what happened to my DH. Had bloods on Monday, had a phone call from the dr Monday morning at 8am to expect a phone call from the cancer hospital imminently and to take someone with him to the appointment and to ‘expect to be told it’s cancer’. The appointment was made for 24 hours later with a haematologist in the cancer hospital. It was horrific. Turns out he had glandular fever and his bloods were all vastly abnormal but not cancer related.

it was horrific
