How to get rid of the smell of Weed!

PlutoPirate · 11/10/2025 20:52

Been out for the day enjoying some lovely autumn sunshine leaving a few windows ajar and now I've once again come home to a house that stinks of weed.

I have absolutely no idea which of my neighbours is the culprit otherwise I'd try and have a chat but the smell is incredibly intense.

We've put up with it all summer and I thought now it was getting cooler it would be as prevalent, evidently I was wrong. Does anyone have any fail safe odour eliminating methods, please or just a sympathetic ear to tell me we're not the only ones plagued by the smell.

Massive sympathies. It stinks, I literally can't stand it. We had this alot this year and couldn't tell where it was coming from. Made our house stink and our young children were asking what the smell was.

We tried to follow the stench but just couldn't pin point it.

Last week, my husband was pressure washing our drive and this lad from about 5 doors down came and asked my husband if he minded if he smoked a 'zoo' on the public footpath down the side of our house. He thought my husband was a work man.
Anyway, this gave my husband the opportunity to say that yes he did mind, and that he's been trying to see who is doing it for ages.

To be fair to the lad, he said he'll go and smoke it on a field instead now, and we haven't smelt it since.

A 'zoo' is apparently a very strong joint Confused

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/10/2025 20:59

A common problem, that the Flower Pot Men often complained about, but 'the man who worked in the garden' did nothing about.
...but I think the little house knew something about it, don't you?'

JurassicPark4Eva · 11/10/2025 21:00

Burn candles, windows open across the house to draw the air through all rooms. That's about it.

PeonyPatch · 11/10/2025 21:00

Report it

PlutoPirate · 11/10/2025 21:06

PeonyPatch · 11/10/2025 21:00

Report it

I'm not sure much will happen if I report it given I don't know who is smoking it and to be honest even if I did I doubt the police will do much. It seems frustratingly common to smell weed these days when out and about so there doesn't seem to be much concern of a deterrent.

I'm sorry to hear others have had similar problems and unfortunately candles and letting the air flow don't really seem to reduce the potency of the smell. It lingers for hours.

Woke up this morning and there was no smell, let the dog out and I was hit by a wave of it so now the whole place smells of weed again. Seriously fed up of it now.

No suggestions, but my full sympathies, it makes me feel sick. Lots of people smoke it openly in our town and the stench is awful. I would hate my house to smell of it.

*zoot is a marijuana cigarette

a zoo is a facility for keeping animals, short for ‘zoological garden’

Yes I've definitely noticed in the last few years the amount of people openly smoking it has sky rocketed.

My whole house stinks even though I have the windows open and candles lit and I feel light headed. It's not even 9am and i'm sitting on my sofa wishing they smoked normal cigarettes.

There’s no point in reporting it imo. We have an absolute horror of a neighbour and can’t open our windows / leave the kitchen door open because of her.

Reported to the police - no interest.
Reported to council, she’s a council tenant in a council house - only to be told they wouldn’t get involved as it might be medicinal.

F*cking MEDICINAL!?!?

Medicinal my arse.

So I asked them to confirm that they were happy being aware one of their tenants in one of their properties was using illegal drugs and they were doing nothing about it.

They responded with ‘well have a word about the smell’.

This woman is notorious in our town for her appalling behaviour. She is under the care of the mental health team and literally suffers no consequences for her behaviour at all.

and my house stinks……

massive sympathies Op.

PlutoPirate · 12/10/2025 10:23

Sorry you have had similar issues ChocoChocoLatte. I did think it wouldn't be worth reporting and I'm sorry you found that to be true.

Did you ever work out something that helped with the smell at all? It's honestly so overpowering. Sad

FutureMarchionessOfVidal · 12/10/2025 10:37

I very much doubt it is worth reporting to police. My aunt who I look after had this. Neighbours were not just smoking it on doorstep (very openly, in a terrace, it came right in her window) but selling it- late night fights, screaming, shouting, broken windows, as well as the smell. The police were well aware (she had them on the doorstep several times when there were fights etc) but they were open about the fact that they were not shutting it down as they knew where it was and preferred that. (I found this astonishing.)

Nothing helped with the smell because it was actually coming in the windows.

In the end the neighbours - short term HMO tenants - moved. You may find your problem also moves away. I do hope so.

If you find out it is coming from a rented property, you might get results from the landlord, whether private or housing assoc. I think in the end my aunt’s problem neighbours moved away largely because their private landlord got fed up with complaints about them and took action. (We had his home phone number & the whole street started calling him whenever there was an issue- ie regularly.)

Alternatively do you have a man who- if the the source becomes apparent- would be comfortable going out and saying ‘mate, it’s stinking the house out, you need to do it somewhere else, just go to [end of road/park*/whatever]’? Not all weed smokers are unreasonable. But also not all men comfortable doing this obviously.

*not children’s play area of course

Timeforabitofpeace · 12/10/2025 10:53

Could a neighbour be growing it in the loft? Just a thought.

PlutoPirate · 12/10/2025 11:11

Hopefully whoever it is moves out soon like they did at your aunt's FutureMarchionessOfVidal and I hope she has much nicer neighbours now. I'm not surprised you were shocked by the police response though, openly admitting it is really surprising.

Will see if I can track down who it is and have a chat but unfortunately it's been an impossible task to locate the person responsible so far.

I don't think they are growing it as the smell isn't always present which I feel like it would be if it was being grown rather than smoked. Although I don't know how accurate that is.

Wax melt burner and some good wax melts

ErniesGhostlyGoldTops · 12/10/2025 11:42

Could you stop using your front door and start just using your back door and keep everything shut on the side that is allowing it in?

Growing up, we had a pervy neighbour and we stopped using the front door completely so he couldn't see us coming and going. We got so used to it, when someone knocked on the front, it felt weird to open it.

It stinks but people don't give a rats ass about anyone else nowadays.

PlutoPirate · 12/10/2025 11:50

It wouldn't make a difference unfortunately I can smell it out front and out the back. I wish the solution was that simple.

Wax melt burner and some good wax melts

I'll try a wax burner, will it be better than candles because they mask the smell a little but unfortunately don't get rid of it completely?

PevenseygirlQQ · 12/10/2025 11:55

When you start smelling the smell shout out of you window, can you stop flipping smoking near my house! Might not work but might make you feel better 😂

I agree wax melts tend to smell more potent than regular candles

loubielou31 · 12/10/2025 12:02

Would some sort of air filter/ purifier work? I really feel for you because when I feel like my house is a bit stale I open all the windows just to move the air around but for you this would be awful. I really don't like the artificial smell from things like air fresheners but it has to be better than the stink of weed.

twointhemorning · 12/10/2025 12:05

I wonder if an air purifier with an odour filter (charcoal filter) might help? I've just bought one because we are having issues with the smell of smoke from our neighbour. Unfortunately they're not doing it at the moment so I can't tell how effective it is yet...
