Seriously considering my teen trying weed

I know, I know.

It sounds horrendous and would make me a shit mum.

She has been having myoclonic seizures for years, they are painful and make her life pretty unbearable.

She has no friends, no life outside of the house, can't really do anything much, can't sleep, her education is suffering massively.

I've tried everything, every medication offered, it doesn't help, every type of alternative therapy, every type of traditional therapy, there is nothing I haven't tried.

I just want her to be able to live a somewhat normal life.

I know there are issues with weed, but the side effects of all the meds she has been on have been worse tbh.

I just don't know how to watch her go through this anymore.

I'm giving it some very serious consideration.

I'm not brave enough for AIBU, but I guess that's what I'm asking.

Please be kind, I'm a Mum who hasn't had longer than an hours sleep for 5 years and watching her suffer and be unable to go to school again today has pushed me to the edge honestly.

(NC been on MN for ages if you want to check, I'm not ragebaiting I'm just trying to get opinions because I can't discuss it irl for obvious reasons).

I can't say it feels great having to get illegal drugs for my teenager, but it's absolutely been worth the stress of it so far.

The safest way to insulate yourself from criminality is to grow your own.Plenty of YouTube channels and hydroponics suppliers to help you.

I've never actually thought about growing my own. Someone my dc knows grows it for medical reasons for themselves, they make dd the edibles.

I may ask them about the ease of growing, we are only using a very small amount at the moment though so I'm not sure it would be worth it, I would probably think I was using a tiny bit and dd would end up stoned for a week 🤣

Always good to try all options and weed is, after all, a natural plant with clearly so many effective remedies. I'm sure you know, best not to have it in spliff form, rather maybe in a CBD oil/form recommended by professionals!

It helps a few people i know to function without being stoned. Good luck! Xxx

As long as you're keeping clear of street muck, looks like you're sorted.

If you want to know, there is plenty on youtube (no need to have to go anywhere shady)

I have schizoaffective disorder &.been under psychosis services on & off for most of my life.
Cannabis is strongly linked to psychosis especially in adolescents.
I can understand that you want a cure for your child but I've seen so many young lives ruined by psychosis that I would be very, very wary of using it without medical supervision that young.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/02/2026 21:55

I know nothing really about your situation or the effects - but from a medical perspective this is really really interesting. I would urge you to keep a diary - dosage, timings, effects either way etc…. Just keep it somewhere secure!!!
fwiw I think you sound like a wonderful, desperate mother.

I'm so sorry to read of your struggles, and thank you for being concerned.

It's something I've had to carefully think about, and weigh up the options.

Dds condition has been severely impacting every aspect of her life, including her mental health, education, friendships, weight... you name it, it's been impacted negatively.

Essentially I'm microdosing her, so there are no large quantities involved at all. Where I understand there's a slight possibility of this affecting her mental health in the future, dd and I decided that the definite impacts it's having on her life just now are more of a concern.

There's no right or wrong, both options aren't ideal unfortunately, so I'm just making the best of things with the information I have at the moment.

Thank you, I am keeping a record just in case the hospital needs to know in case of an emergency at any point. Although the dose is so tiny I'm sure it wouldn't impact anything.

Not so sure about being a wonderful Mum, but I am a desperate one, that's for sure. Thank you for saying so.

I applaud you. It's so hard seeing your child suffer knowing there are drugs that may help but legally being unable to get them prescribed. I definitely think you are a wonderful mum.

Many homegrowers look to control the strain grown, and just as important how it is harvested and cured. All of these will affect the balance between the CBD and THC compounds.

Ingesting rather than smoking will also affect the THC derivatives that enter the bloodstream, which may be key to a therapeutic use.

Again all of this is available in respectable sites once you know the keywords.

Unless someone is speaking about cannabis they have grown themselves, any talk is rather moot. You have no idea what is in street weed (is it even cannabis to begin with ?). A lot of the reported stories around cannabis will invariably lead back to god knows what, but it isn't cannabis. And even if you source only cannabis on the street the THC:CBD ratio will probably be skewed low to accentuate the high. Which is a shame as CBD is a natural partner to THC and balances out it's psychocative properties.

OP seems on the right track. It is entirely possible to medicate with cannabis an not experience any psychoactive effects as many people do.

ProbsamURbutImattheendofmytether · 04/02/2026 16:07

I would never buy drugs off the street for dd for all the reasons given. The person I know has been growing their own, for their own chronic pain, for years, the side effects are so much less than the pain medication they were on. A lot of the medication dd was on gave her so many side effects that were, in some ways, worse than her condition as well. So far there have been none from this, bar being a little sleepier for a couple of days while we got the dose right.

Although I can't predict the future I've done this the safest possible way I can, and the results have been better than I could ever hope for.

If there is an impact on her mental health then that's an unfortunate bridge to cross if we get there, just now it's done wonders for her mental health as well, so I'm focusing in that for the moment, while keeping an eye out for the future.

Thanks for all the advice and support.
