Seriously considering my teen trying weed

I know, I know.

It sounds horrendous and would make me a shit mum.

She has been having myoclonic seizures for years, they are painful and make her life pretty unbearable.

She has no friends, no life outside of the house, can't really do anything much, can't sleep, her education is suffering massively.

I've tried everything, every medication offered, it doesn't help, every type of alternative therapy, every type of traditional therapy, there is nothing I haven't tried.

I just want her to be able to live a somewhat normal life.

I know there are issues with weed, but the side effects of all the meds she has been on have been worse tbh.

I just don't know how to watch her go through this anymore.

I'm giving it some very serious consideration.

I'm not brave enough for AIBU, but I guess that's what I'm asking.

Please be kind, I'm a Mum who hasn't had longer than an hours sleep for 5 years and watching her suffer and be unable to go to school again today has pushed me to the edge honestly.

(NC been on MN for ages if you want to check, I'm not ragebaiting I'm just trying to get opinions because I can't discuss it irl for obvious reasons).

Already been covered, but try CBD products first before considering weed. If you do consider actual weed, grow it yourself (or someone you trust) so you know the strength/strain. Too risky to buy street weed/skunk.

Raindropsnroses · 10/10/2025 17:24

@ProbsamURbutImattheendofmytether if you haven’t already, it might be well worth contacting the Mum that @Cafog linked to. She’s very active in the media at the moment with her campaign, and looks like she will be supplying the meds, all above board, from next year.

ProbsamURbutImattheendofmytether · 10/10/2025 19:19

I did try CBD a while back, and it did make things slightly better for a short time, then we were back to square one.

I've made a list of all the helpful links and tips from this thread and will be looking and speaking to some of the people to get some advice on the best way to go about things.

I'm pretty confident in saying I'm going to try this some way, I just need more advice on how/what/how much etc.

Thank you all

Hashish if at all possible a much gentler experience.

ProbsamURbutImattheendofmytether · 31/10/2025 09:21

Just a little update here.

After more research and advice from people who have done this, I bit the bullet.

Without too many details I was able to get someone who knows what they are doing/is very trustworthy to make her very low dose edibles

One tiny seizure in 3 days, she has slept right through the night (I still haven't because I check on her constantly) and her OCD symptoms seem to have lessened.

We are messing about with the timings because she's fairly sleepy in the morning still, but not in pain at all.

All is looking good so far. Just need to get the timings right.

I'm going to continue for the foreseeable and just hope this is the thing that finally works.

Thank you everyone for your advice on here and recommendations on where to contact for advice.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you all.

What a great update, OP. I'm so glad DD's quality of life is a bit better!

LancashireButterPie · 31/10/2025 09:30

I think it's ludicrous that you've had to resort to this OP, there should definitely be a legal route. I'm really glad she's had a good result with it.

Please remind her not to mention this at school or to friends, as the last thing you need is social services becoming involved.

Choconuts · 31/10/2025 09:42

I would recommend looking on Reddit for information about medical cannabis. I believe it is a brilliant painkiller and a lot better for you and with less side effects than painkillers such as opioids.

Do you mean CBD or rolling her a joint.

It is medicinal and can really help.
Personally I’d try CBD oil and potentially move over to the plant (in brownies etc) if I felt like something stronger would be helpful and that was what she wanted too. She’s old enough to have a say.
Sounds like you’re being very sensible.

You mean CBD or THC.

Rolling a joint 🙄

You can get THC in edibles, oil, vape carts. You can also use a dry herb vape for flowers.

No one who wants to use cannabis medically needs to smoke it.

ProbsamURbutImattheendofmytether · 31/10/2025 10:03

Thank you, I'm just hoping this is the solution that will last.

We had a big discussion and she knows not to say anything at all, she is a very moral person but she absolutely understands why I wanted to try this, and is in agreement and its been amazing for her to get some relief even for a few days.

I can't say it feels great having to get illegal drugs for my teenager, but it's absolutely been worth the stress of it so far.

I know there's a massive risk SS will become involved if it were to be divulged anywhere, and the last thing dd and I need is that, but I am just simply at the end of my tether with watching my baby go through so much. Its not too much longer until she's 16 really, and at 18 she can hopefully get it legally.

I'll pop back and update in a month or 2.

This is so good to hear OP, hope the easing of her symptoms continues ❤️

TheFunSponge · 01/11/2025 09:57

Have you tried her on a gluten free diet? There is plenty of info if you google.

indecisivewoman81 · 01/11/2025 09:58

I would try it. It might be the thing that really helps her.

ProbsamURbutImattheendofmytether · 25/11/2025 16:12

Just a little update here.

She's like a different kid. Her seizures have been reduced by about 75% I would say, she's sleeping better. She is able to focus more at school. Her pain is significantly reduced too.

Kicking myself I didn't try this earlier.

It's only been about a month, but if it starts wearing off I can up the amount, she is on a teeny tiny amount atm, and there are different types we can try if need be apparently.

It's honestly been life changing.

OP posts:
Craftysue · 25/11/2025 16:17

Glad to hear it's working well for you both 😊

TheMixedGirl · 25/11/2025 16:18

Why are you a shit mum? Most teens try it anyway even though they dont have medical issues. Go for it. At least you'll be in control of it.

Please please please speak to a doctor or her neurologist- cannabidiol can be prescribed for certain types of seizures and depending on your daughters diagnosis may be an option for her.

you need to try and approach this from a safe legalised route. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that if you were caught buying illegal substances to supply a child there would be serious consequences, circumstances irrespective

im not sure on the law surrounding other types such as cbd oil but I just want
to urge ongoing caution

I am being as cautious as I can possibly be. I have weighed up the risks vs benefits and i can do this legally when she's 18, they just can't do anything like this until then unfortunately.

I absolutely share your concerns, but if you saw your child suffering the way mine was you would be pretty desperate too.

I do have a plan if any tests show anything up, but I'm sure I probably will get in trouble, it's a risk I'm willing to take for my dds sake.

Honestly I’m not judging you. I know personally how bad those seizures are and if I was in your situation I would be seriously considering the same.

I just want you and your daughter to be okay.

have you spoke to her specialists about cannabidiol then? Have they specifically said no? X

Mistyglade · 25/11/2025 17:05

You sound like a brilliant mum and I say go for it. Be safe where you get it and make sure it’s not a heavy blend. Very little to start and see how she goes. I wish you and your DD all the luck.

I have spoken to her doctors about it and they won't even think about prescribing it until she's 18, which is just over 2 years away yet. I did get her CBD oil a while ago, which slightly helped for a short time, but it didn't last long unfortunately.

Honestly, if I wasn't in my situation, I would probably judge me. I know how it sounds.

If there was a legal way to do this I would be all over it, and as soon as she is 18 I will. This is just for the short term.

I am being as safe as I possibly can be, I know the person who is growing it, and they have been advising and helping a huge amount.

OP if I were in your shoes I would do exactly the same. You are a great mum 💐

JudiRuliani · 25/11/2025 18:46

You’re not a shit mum at all. You can get a private prescription for medical marijuana (just the THC part, not the part that gets you stoned/wasted/high) through Releaf UK

https://releaf.co.uk/

I use it for a debilitating condition and it has been amazing, so I wish you and your daughter all the best. It has given me my life back and your daughter deserves that, you’re a wonderful mum to explore options.

JudiRuliani · 25/11/2025 18:50

Sorry, just seen her age but still think they’re worth a try as she is almost 16. If you know the grower you’ll know what you’re getting is decent quality, and it sounds like they’ve advised on how to take it (baked into cookies /brownies would be good although it does seem stronger this way - I found out the hard way, and was absolutely battered!!). I’m sure you know that it’s better to start with a small amount to work out what she’s ok with and build up as tolerance increases.
