Could you cope with twin beds for one night?

Just interested in what people think.

Our DC have grown up and left home, so we have two spare bedrooms. One has a double bed in, and is the room we usually give to guests. The other has twin beds in, both 3'6" beds with a small chest of drawers in between them on which there's a bedside light, a few books etc.

We've just had two sets of friends to stay for the weekend. Couple A arrived on Friday night and have just gone home. They got the double room.

Couple B arrived on Saturday afternoon and went a few hours ago (longer drive) and we put them the twin room. When they've visited before they've been the only couple here so have had the double room. They asked if we could rearrange the furniture so that the two single beds could be pushed together as they "couldn't sleep apart". So we ended up having to empty the chest of drawers, lug everything around and reassemble it on Saturday only to do it all in reverse this afternoon.

We've all known each other since uni, all been married for 30+ years and I was a bit surprised that they couldn't sleep with 3ft gap between them for one night. But then I decided maybe I was the exception.

So, for those of you who've been married/together for years, could you bear to sleep in the same room but not the same bed as your partner for one night, or would you have to rearrange all the furniture so that you could snuggle up together?

I would probably have pushed the beds together or else asked what they wanted as the other friends were going to get the double bed. But then in their shoes I also wouldn't dream of making a fuss. I did once fall out of a single bed though. 🤣But it had space on both sides and im guessing yours are against a wall

Cynic17 · 05/10/2025 20:23

Of course! It's kind of people to invite us, so I wouldn't object to separate rooms either. It's very juvenile to make a fuss about a double bed.

Implodingyourmirage · 05/10/2025 20:24

'Unfortunately not' is a suitable reply to silly requests. Of course they could have slept in the twins!

When twin beds have been the only option in hotel bookings, I’m secretly delighted 🤣

My husband is delighted when we go somewhere and it's a twin bed set up 😂

Same, we actively book twin rooms where possible.

HollyIvie · 05/10/2025 20:27

I'd love it 😂

reversegear · 05/10/2025 20:28

Seperate rooms here let alone beds!!! But I’d have accommodated them if they are great friends, no issues.

luckylavender · 05/10/2025 20:29

How rude of your friends

MiddleAgedDread · 05/10/2025 20:33

Absolutely not an issue, in a hotel I’d be annoyed if I booked a double and got a twin, or vice versa, but if someone is hosting me in their home I’m just grateful for a bed!!

Blueuggboots · 05/10/2025 20:34

Yup. Wouldn’t have an issue with this for one night.

And maybe the flip is you dont put your host out if you are great friends.

I really don't think it was, they are so lovely. It genuinely felt like they couldn't bear that 3' gap and made me think maybe DH and I aren't as close as we think we are..... This set up wouldn't bother us in the least

That's really crackers and embarrassing for grown adults

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2025 20:38

Things I loathe

Double beds
Sharing a duvet

King with separate single duvets please.

puddlegoose · 05/10/2025 20:40

How strange that they were so bothered for one night!

Curious to know if they also requested a double duvet or did they keep the two single duvets??

NannyOggsScones · 05/10/2025 20:40

We have a super king as DH is 6ft 5 so a standard double is a nightmare (2nd hand breath in your face all night). Love a twin set up over a double and definitely not pushed together. We went one step further and stayed in a the summer and stayed in a cabin hotel with huge bunk beds. Top bunk for me as I’m more agile - we loved it!

SwankyPants · 05/10/2025 20:40

I would put up with bunk beds for one night 🤣

WimpoleHat · 05/10/2025 20:41

Our friends are lovely, so please don't think they were being rude.

But they were being rude - there’s no other explanation for something like this! It may not have suited them - but if you want accommodation arranged according to your exact specifications, then you need to book a hotel. They had a proper bed each, which cannot possibly be an issue for anyone without specific medical needs.

InSpainTheRain · 05/10/2025 20:41

Yes, we'd be fine with twin beds for a night, or even a few nights. I think it was rude to ask you to put them together. To me it seems like they are making a point.

whatsit84 · 05/10/2025 20:41

No, how is this an issue?!

Timeforabitofpeace · 05/10/2025 20:42

Ridiculous and very rude.

Portakalkedi · 05/10/2025 20:42

They sound entitled and rude. I'd have laughed at their request.

Monster6 · 05/10/2025 20:43

They are weirdos.

Goinggreymammy · 05/10/2025 20:43

I think they were cheeky to ask and as a host I would have said "no, we can't, sorry, that's all that's available tonight I'm afraid" in a laughing way, but not give any reason why you didnt want to move them, so they couldn't suggest solutions. Then the ball would be in their court to either put up with it or suggest they go elsewhere.

mixedcereal · 05/10/2025 20:44

I would have suggested they rearrange the furniture themselves.

pandering to this nonsense and moving the furniture yourselves is lunacy!
