Could you cope with twin beds for one night?

Just interested in what people think.

Our DC have grown up and left home, so we have two spare bedrooms. One has a double bed in, and is the room we usually give to guests. The other has twin beds in, both 3'6" beds with a small chest of drawers in between them on which there's a bedside light, a few books etc.

We've just had two sets of friends to stay for the weekend. Couple A arrived on Friday night and have just gone home. They got the double room.

Couple B arrived on Saturday afternoon and went a few hours ago (longer drive) and we put them the twin room. When they've visited before they've been the only couple here so have had the double room. They asked if we could rearrange the furniture so that the two single beds could be pushed together as they "couldn't sleep apart". So we ended up having to empty the chest of drawers, lug everything around and reassemble it on Saturday only to do it all in reverse this afternoon.

We've all known each other since uni, all been married for 30+ years and I was a bit surprised that they couldn't sleep with 3ft gap between them for one night. But then I decided maybe I was the exception.

So, for those of you who've been married/together for years, could you bear to sleep in the same room but not the same bed as your partner for one night, or would you have to rearrange all the furniture so that you could snuggle up together?

Could I cope for one night????? Heck I could cope with it forever 😍

Imisscoffee2021 · 05/10/2025 21:13

"Cant" means "won't" in this case. That's nuts.

omg... 3 years ago we spent 1 week at a travellodge in london ontario, as we had sold our home, and were moving abroad, it was the only one that accepted dogs and was right by london airport. We took it because we had two large dogs moving with us. I nearly cried when I entered the king size bedroom that my husband had booked..to see two queen size beds (tears of fucking JOY) If I could do it now in our bedroom I so would!! lovely week,, cuddling watching tv in the evening,, then I moved over, husband stuck with two dogs all night...me...starfishing and loving it

We have a zip and link Superking sized bed at home ( 6 feet/180cm wide). I have 2 sleep disorders. We NEED to have the same or twin beds when we are away on holiday/staying over with someone. On occasion, we have actually had to sleep in separate rooms if no twins are available. Sounds to me like they were making a point and being very difficult about it

Puregoldy · 05/10/2025 21:15

I love having the bed to myself no snoring or fidgeting!

MeridianB · 05/10/2025 21:15

OP you keep saying how lovely and definitely not rude they are. And yet… they were guests in someone else’s home and made a fuss about their one-night sleeping arrangements to the point that their host had to empty a chest if drawers and move it.

They really were rude.

Nowimhereandimlost · 05/10/2025 21:15

Twin beds = #thedream

ButterPiesAreGreat · 05/10/2025 21:16

We have done, it wouldn’t bother me. That sounds crazy.

That's no problem Mabel, just move the furniture and sort it out the way you want it. I'll put the kettle on shall I?

This. If they want to move the furniture, go right ahead. I'm not doing it though.

Youraveragelass · 05/10/2025 21:17

In this scenario, I wouldn’t have made a fuss. I don’t like sleeping in separate beds - I would never choose to sleep separately if we had a choice but I wouldn’t have made friends/ family move their bedroom furniture around for one evening.

PastaAllaNorma · 05/10/2025 21:17

DP would privately make a face, he hates sleeping apart.

I would enjoy the space - I quite like a night with a bed to myself. As for two singles Vs a double, yes please! Having got used to a super king-size at home, doubles feel so crowded.

ExposedCankles · 05/10/2025 21:17

Absolutely not weird if you for being fine single beds. Completely fine for most people i would have thought and if I had 2 spare bedrooms I would also make one up as a twin for flexibility.

Catwoman8 · 05/10/2025 21:18

Pathetic and rude to ask you to start moving the furniture around. They could have absolutely coped, sounds like they were just being awkward to prove a point that they would have preferred the other room.

Poodlelove · 05/10/2025 21:18

Ridiculous people , single beds is fine.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/10/2025 21:20

I would love twin beds. Even better separate rooms. DH is a snorer.

DreamTheMoors · 05/10/2025 21:21

Emily Post would’ve slapped them for making such a ridiculous demand.

Owly11 · 05/10/2025 21:21

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 05/10/2025 21:13

I need to reiterate that they are lovely people. They weren't rude or difficult, and I wasn't at all put out about this. I posted to ask because I was intrigued as to whether or not DH and I are weird for this not bothering us.

Why are you so insistent that they weren’t rude when multiple posters agree that asking you to rearrange the furniture is rude? I am so curious now. Can you not see that if you stay at someone’s house it’s rude to ask the host to move furniture however politely you ask?

When we used to take holidays in the US the rooms always had two double beds……..one each and it was absolute bliss! No hairy legs, sharp toe nails, snoring, farting, grunting…………my OH was delighted to get a good nights sleep 🤣🤣

That's exactly why we do it. At Christmas etc the DC sometimes have to share a room so need separate beds. I've sometimes had some girlfriends staying who need to share a room. Twin beds means we can accommodate different groups of friends and relatives more easily

Unless this was their honeymoon CFs of the highest order. This is so, so weird. I'd have said no, just to save them from themselves.

popcornandpotatoes · 05/10/2025 21:30

Of course we could cope for one night

Wallywobbles · 05/10/2025 21:32

My parents only have twin beds for guests. Used to be a bit of a pain when we were a new couple. Now it’s absolutely fine.

Love twin beds when staying away from home.
Your friends probably thought they 'should' get the double bed. I would have refused to move the furniture around for one night.
