Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

Surely nobody locks doors, takes their phones out with them and generally does pretty normal things?????
What a shock

Well thank goodness I had my phone with me the day I was walking my dog, tripped over and smashed my arm and dislocated my shoulder! The lovely people who found me were able to contact my husband and call 999. So yes my phone is with me whenever I go out.

Tbf my phone is really chunky due to having to have a rugged one for work, but I'd hate to feel tied to it anyway

I think many people are very tied to their phones - bank cards, music, emails, expectation to be in contact or in that habit. I think it’s great you’re not tied to your phone though and I would love to be more like that.

Phones can do a lot more than they could 10 years ago and people use them a lot more. Things move on.

Things might move on, but not all people do.

DingDongJingle · 04/10/2025 17:46

Yep, always have my phone with me too.

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:46

Mydadsbirthday · 04/10/2025 17:41

OP kindly it sounds like you're posting from the 1990s, referring to your chunky phone and it being useful technology!

My phone opens my car and pays for shopping so yes of course I need it with me at all times. I'm at the gym now and I need it to swipe in, and I'm playing a workout on it and I'll be using it to listen to an audiobook while on the treadmill.

DH will call me on it to ask what we should have for dinner shortly and my DD who is on a school trip will be messaging me on it soon I hope.

Really it's just part of how we live now isn't it?

The chunky thing is because I'm a delivery driver. So I have to have a huge battery to last the day, and something that doesn't matter if I drop it when carrying boxes. And stands the weather.

So I do actually use it loads, just not outside of work much

Well clearly I'm the weirdo here. When the heck did everything change? I don't think people were doing this 10 years ago?

A lot of things have changed in the past 10 years, which I’m sure you know.

RanyaJerodung · 04/10/2025 17:46

I'm the same as most people on here - I take my phone everywhere.
Oh, and I also lock doors of my house when I go out.

SparklyCardigan · 04/10/2025 17:09

Surely no-one is that faux naive. It's 2025. Of course you need your phone at the shops.

News to me.

I don’t need mine at the shops, always use chip and PIN or cash. I do always have my phone with me, but I don’t use Apple Pay or equivalent.

It’s frightening how quickly people have become hooked on mobile phones, and sad when you see people in restaurants just staring at them and not chatting.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 04/10/2025 17:47

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/10/2025 17:22

I've always taken my phone everywhere with me ever since I got my first mobile in 1999. I mean that is kind of the point of a mobile phone no?

Me too, and exactly. I thought my Nokia 6110 had some pretty handy functions, and my iPhone is vastly more useful and capable.

Why don’t you just have a normal phone and charge it in your van?

PaellaPan · 04/10/2025 17:48

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:22

No I don't

Erm, when you say no insurance, is your house your own? No mortgage, which makes buildings insurance a prerequisite? Or is it rented? Can you comfortably afford to replace your home and contents if something happens? Not just a burglary, but a fire?

Back to phones - mine goes everywhere. I use it to pay for things, and it unlocks my car. I use it to listen to stuff when I am at the gym/running etc. I also have an elderly mum who often needs me to help her urgently. etc

Well I have to say, I’m not doing any of those things at all.

The only one I’m doing is using it to ,isten to music in the car. Agd Thars main,y because there’s no radio station I want to ,isten to. Otherwise I’d do that.

🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I definitely carried my phone everywhere 10 years ago.

I’d guess it changed when smart phones were invented. everything is on them now, camera, bank card, shop loyalty cards etc.

You don't take your phone when you go for a walk in the countryside? Hope you never have an accident, then.

Haha I don’t lock my front door incase I lose my keys . I live in a flat now and haven’t locked my front door for years to the point where the landlord has locked me out one time coz he had a work man round and he locked my front door and I didn’t have my keys as they were at home 🤣🤣 so I was locked out all weekend til the office opened on the Monday morning . I had to tell the landlords son not to lock my door if he came and it was already open , he did look at me like 😲 when I explained ha .

and I used to leave my front door of my previous house open and my neighbours used to just throw my parcels into my hallway if I wasn’t home .

I am verrryyyy trusting I think 🤣

Actually, that's a fair point, I'm NOT the only person that doesn't lock their door. As a delivery driver, I have quite a few customers that just tell me to open their door and put stuff in.

However my family think I'm a loon

Yes I take it everywhere. If I’m dog walking it’s security, if I’m running hits for music or a podcast. The only place it wouldn’t be is a sauna, pool etc. I pay with it, read the news on it, play music on it etc.
I work in a school so it stays in my bag until breaks but it’s close by.

MaurineWayBack · 04/10/2025 17:50

@Mydadsbirthday id hate a car that needs my phone to open it tbh.

blobby10 · 04/10/2025 17:50

I hate that I have to but I too take my phone when I walk the dog - just in case something happens to me or her and i need help. Or if one of my children needs me or if my parents have a fall or if the alarm at work goes off (i'm the only keyholder) . I don't have any payment stuff on it so don't need to take it to the shops but do use the maps especially if I'm walking somewhere unfamiliar and my sense of direction is even more rubbish than usual.

Rented social housing. Also very high risk of flooding, so I think it'd be super expensive. Not got a great amount of stuff worth nicking, although granted it would be a pain in the arse.

My 62 year old Mum doesn’t even own a mobile phone and hasn’t for all of her life. She doesn’t even have a current passport or photograph driving license either.

Sugarahhoneyhoney · 04/10/2025 17:51

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:09

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

That's what the pockets are for in exercise leggings. Your phone.

I listen to music podcasts or radio whenever I'm out walking, via my phone.

All dog walks. I track my steps on my phone.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 04/10/2025 17:51

if I go out without my phone, it's because I've specifically decided not to take it. It's rare that I do that.

Mydadsbirthday · 04/10/2025 17:52

MaurineWayBack · 04/10/2025 17:50

@Mydadsbirthday id hate a car that needs my phone to open it tbh.

But it literally just opens when I approach it, if my phones in my pocket or my bag. I don't have to do anything. It's great.

Do you not receive any messages or calls on your phone ever?
