Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

And unless you’ve an amazing memory, most of the people you need to contact you’ll need to call their mobile and I’d say those numbers are harder to remember than landlines.

Definitely i don't even know my own number let alone anyone else's

Who said anything about 'brick phones'? That's not the proper term for what I'm talking about, although I realise that is something often said.

youre talking about none smart phones with keyboard that have battery for days, colloquially a brick phone.

which may be good for some people, but a person like pp mother who is used to using an iPhone is unlikely to feel that’s the best choice, you keep going on about charging, what is more likely to be remembered to be charged, the iPhone she uses regularly for things beyond phone calls or the brick phone that is a random backup?

liveforsummer · 05/10/2025 18:31

I can’t buy anything from the shops without my phone, on the school run I may need to take a note or save a phone number. On a countryside walk I may see something beautiful that I’d like to take a picture of. I can’t do any of those things without my phone!

I have got 3 feature phones now. I keep one of them on the floor fully charged and turned off. If I fall and can't get up I could use it to dial 999, phone a neighbour or text a relative. It costs me nothing to use because it is pay-as-you go. I turn it on sometimes to see if there are any messages but it doesn't usually need recharging. Then I have my main feature phone which I take out with me but mostly just to tell the time and take an occasional photo.

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

Do you live in the 1950s?

I carry my phone because student DD lives 2 hours away and DH has recently had open heart surgery. I lock doors even though we live in an area with a low crime rate it isn't a zero crime rate.

I have all my loyalty cards and bank card in my wallet and I like to take photos when I go out for a walk.

You are an anomaly.

Blades2 · 05/10/2025 18:43

Even the police tell you, bring your phone on country walks. What happens if you fall? Get lost?
I think 99% of the population takes their phone everywhere with them.

I think you were very dramatic calling it a life threatening decision having the iPhone when your alternative is a bunch of switched off phones scattered around.

pp could get her mum an iwatch an enable fall detection if she wanted a backup and her mum could hey siri her phone from the ground.

its good that your solution will work for you, but i dont see how having a bunch of switched off phones (which you will have to get to and switch on) is some how a far better solution than the mothers current iPhone.

cardibach · 05/10/2025 18:57

JennyShaw · 05/10/2025 17:34

That wouldn't be an intelligent decision. It could be a life threatening decision.

How is having an additional means of contact life threatening? Without it she’d have the landline. She can still have that. The mobile is extra. And the issues you suggest are really unlikely.

liveforsummer · 05/10/2025 18:58

Fwiw you can get phone cases with inbuilt power banks which aren’t much bigger than a normal phone case , or magnet wireless charging banks that sit unobtrusively on to the back of your phone. You don’t need a huge clunky thing or any wires

Toptops · 05/10/2025 19:03

I always carry my phone with me, plus a small battery pack

I'm getting some useful and interesting information from this thread.

Bleachedlevis · 05/10/2025 19:05

Are you being provocative, OP? Surely you know that most people have their phones with them 24/7 these days? Or is this some kind of performative anti-tech/Im different from everyone else so I’m special? Not sure how sincere you are being.

RampantIvy · 05/10/2025 19:06

I travel by train on a regular basis and have the Trainline app and my railcard on my phone.

I must admit I had never heard of being able to unlock your car by using a phone. Every day is a school day.

So actually none of it was relevant to my post about using AppleCare.

It may be. Most insurances offered can be traced back to a few big firms. If I were taking out any insurance, I would want to know the 'big insurer' behind it, and their track record.

Hrft but wtf woman, where have you been.
People are glued/addicted to their phones.

I think OP is being a silly twat. Not sure how genuine she is - or her post.

mydogisthebest · 04/10/2025 18:12

So what happens if you try to pay in a shop or restaurant and their card machine is not working? I can go and draw cash with my bank card as DH did when it happened to us in London. You would be like the 3 people with no card only a phone who had eaten but then could not pay.

Also what if your phone network goes down?

People rely on phones far too much and it's a bit silly really

Then I wouldn’t buy whatever I was buying, pretty obvious really.

You also don’t need signal for Apple Pay to work, surely everyone knows that.

What happens if you want cash and the cash machine is down? You can make up whatever scenarios you want to suit your argument…as you’ve done.

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:22

No I don't

Yes my thought was, your insurance is invalid if you’re not locking your door. I find it utterly bizarre that you don’t lock your door and don’t have insurance, like you’re just literally inviting burglars in!! And you live centrally in a medium sized town. So similar to me. This is completely bizarre! Almost every one of your responses I’m like 😵‍💫 what the hell!!

RampantIvy · 05/10/2025 19:13

Is that the same for Android phones as well? We don't all have iPhones.

saffy2 · 05/10/2025 19:13

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 17:46

The chunky thing is because I'm a delivery driver. So I have to have a huge battery to last the day, and something that doesn't matter if I drop it when carrying boxes. And stands the weather.

So I do actually use it loads, just not outside of work much

Just to let you know iPhones have exceptional batteries and you can charge while you drive.
You genuinely sound absolutely ancient, I’m sorry! I feel like this thread has been written by a 90 year old not someone in the same age bracket as me!!! I’m 41!

jillybean72 · 05/10/2025 19:22

You could be invalidating your home insurance if you were to be burgled and didn’t lock the doors. I know some people live rurally but it’s really not worth the risk is it

She doesn't even have contents insurance!!!!!
For someone who can't even afford a private rental let alone a mortgage I'm surprised they could afford to take the hit on a burglary or a flood or fire.

Such a head in sand post.
