Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

Of course they take it with them. That's where it got it's name! It's fully mobile!

And just for anyone who says they never lock their doors. I used to live in a small-ish village of around 350 people. Not middle of nowhere, not a big village. A resident was just nodding off one night and a bloke jumped out the wardrobe. He was caught- he was a burglar who let himself in through her unlocked door and when he was disturbed he hid in her wardrobe and had been there for hours.

I don't know why you wouldn't, though? Just in case? I live in a very low crime area, but even so, everyone locks their doors!

It’s been about 25 years since I went out without a phone. These days I use it to pay for stuff, including car parking. It opens my front door fgs. It reads books to me while I’m driving. All I need when I go out is my phone and my car key, and my glasses so I can read my phone.

youalright · 04/10/2025 20:21

I take my phone everywhere what if there is an emergency. Phone boxes don't exist anymore so you need to be able contact people or emergency services if something happens.

That sounds really weird, I hate carrying stuff. Don't usually lock the door so I don't have to take keys

You really should for the obvious reasons but also if you get online deliveries. I wfh and forgot to lock front door and an Amazon driver just opened it (not a porch door) and flung a parcel into my hallway! I was momentarily stunned and grateful I was at home and they weren’t up to no good!

I don't have a mobile phone.

Might be a good idea to get one at some point then?

RedRiverShore5 · 04/10/2025 20:22

I don't take one everywhere, I don't take it if I'm just popping to the shops and stuff like that, I do always take it in the car in case it breaks down or I get a puncture. I find it a bit cumbersome to carry out with me.

NoSoupForU · 04/10/2025 20:24

Yes I take it everywhere. Its my main means of paying for things and I need to be contactable at all times for care reasons. And everyone I know is basically the same.

WhineAndWine1 · 04/10/2025 20:25

My phone is always on me. I never take a purse as I use Apple Pay for everything

CherrieTomaties · 04/10/2025 20:26

SEmyarse · 04/10/2025 19:27

Actually, what do you mean? I've got somewhere I can plug it in, but that's way too faffy 200 times a day, and it gets hardly any charge anyway. Or do you mean some kind of wireless arrangement?

Plugging a phone into a charger is “too faffy”?

Dear me OP😂I honestly don’t want to sound rude but it appears you have no idea about living in the modern world.

My car is a 2008. A right old banger. But I bought a USB port thing that plugs into my cig lighter, then I just use a cable for my phone which chargers it whilst I’m driving. More modern cars have wireless phone charger pads in them though.

RedRiverShore5 · 04/10/2025 20:26

I haven't got DC under 18 so I guess that makes a difference, people with DC probably need to be more in touch

NoSoupForU · 04/10/2025 20:27

Also, I wouldn't ever go out and just leave my door unlocked as it would invalidate my insurance.

Thank you, but for the time being at least I manage quite well without one.

You find it ‘weird’ that people take their phone when they leave the house, but completely un-weird to go out and leave your front door unlocked???

Genuinely gobsmacked at your stance!! You’re the bloody weird one here OP!!

Normal people take their phone out. Normal people lock their doors.

Weird people go out without their phone and keys, leaving their door unlocked! 🤯🤦‍♀️🤯

So I'm not normal then because when I pop to the shops I don't take my phone

Nanatobethatsme46 · 04/10/2025 20:37

Yes my phone is always with me , i dont know many people who dont always have their phones with them.
I have an older daughter whos just had her first baby and also a child still in primary school so i need to be contactable at all times

ToadRage · 04/10/2025 20:37

I take my phone pretty much everywhere. My husband and i will often go for drive in the evening and i don't always take my phone but if we are likely to be getting out of the car; shopping, walking etc. i will have my phone on me. What if one of us got hurt or sick and we had no way of contacting the emergency services or we got lost and had no phone to google our location or one of us lost the other and couldn't phone to find out where they were.

RedRiverShore5 · 04/10/2025 20:38

Most people on here though have probably got DC and parents they need to be in touch with at all times because of the demographic the website is aimed at. When DS was young there weren't really any mobiles,

RanyaJerodung · 04/10/2025 20:38

If you have one, why wouldn't you make use of it?.

keepingonrunning · 04/10/2025 20:40

Random question OP - do you live in Scotland?

Zanatdy · 04/10/2025 20:42

My phone is always with me, 100% of the time. I couldn’t have kids and not have my phone nearby, as i’d be paranoid. Yes I coped without it before it existed. Even at work when i’m busy, phone is on my desk. Pretty sure same for most people now. It’s life in 2025.

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 04/10/2025 20:49

Even more so when waiting for the Dr phone call that can come at any time or place and hopefully not when in/on the toilet or on a bus.

Surely no-one is that faux naive. It's 2025. Of course you need your phone at the shops.

You don't actually NEED it. It is useful for getting in contact and I always take mine when driving.
