Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

I do not take my phone out running/racing or for some of my evening walks (or in the pool/lake/sea!). I love the feeling of not being able to be contacted.

londongirl12 · 04/10/2025 19:40

I always have mine with me. I use it for Apple Pay, my food shopping list, Google Maps, have it just in case I need it on the school run eg have an accident. You are probably in the minority.
Definitely in the minority regarding not locking your door!

avocadotofu · 04/10/2025 19:40

My phone comes with me everywhere!

WordleAway · 04/10/2025 19:41

Credit cards, camera, step counter, navigation system (I live rurally and walk alone a lot), …. Oh, and people can contact me, and I them, if needed.

of course I take my phone everywhere. I feel a bit naked and vulnerable without it.

tommyhoundmum · 04/10/2025 19:42

I don't have a mobile phone.

I have a couple of weirdo neigbours who don't lock their doors. Does my head in as it increases the risk of crime and my house insurance going up.

It won’t make your insurance go up because your neighbours won’t be covered in the event of a theft claim.

Yeah I rolled my eyes when my DS said that once. But then when I met up with him and his girlfriend recently she happened to mention, in an exasperated manner, that they were late because DS couldn't find his phone AGAIN. So I think there's at least some truth in it.

My DH has his phone with him for 97% of the day and he still manages to lose it a million times a day

limescale · 04/10/2025 19:44

I am going to start taking my card or some cash around with me though, and store important phone numbers somewhere other that my phone or computer.

I changed my appleID and only realised when my contactless didn't work for a cup of tea.
I was at a garage getting an MOT.
I was able to pay for the MOT by 'revealing' my card details (banking app) and them putting it through manually.
When I was told at Tesco fuel that they could not put a payment through manually (I was running on fumes), I then learnt that I could manually add my card back to my contactless wallet. So it worked out OK, but it was pretty stressful getting to that point.

I also not long before locked my car keys and my phone in the car. I don't know anyone's phone numbers by heart any more, and the code to get into my friend's key safe (to get my spare) is on my phone. I've sorted that out now.

Craycraycatbaby · 04/10/2025 19:44

I left my phone at home the other day when I went to the gym. It was an awful couple of hours 🤣

JohnBullshit · 04/10/2025 19:45

I don't carry mine everywhere, no, and neither do my DH, DS, SIL, best friend...
From that list, I'm the one most likely to have my phone on me. What I don't want is to be compelled to carry it. The amount I can cart around with me is restricted, and if I have my phone it means leaving something else. I'm aware of how feeble that sounds, but it's the truth nonetheless. I do leave it in the house, or the car, on a regular basis.

How desperately sad.

Why is that ‘sad’?
I can’t see how being able to listen to an audio book or check train times is sad.
Or being able to text your husband and tell him the train is running late is sad.
Or catching up on a bit of work on the train is sad.
Or posting on MN while travelling is any more sad than doing it at home.
Or being able to contact your child’s school that you are going to be late is sad.

I feel your pain. I went to the loo without mine the other day. I had to read the shampoo bottle.

Just someone trying to make out they’re somehow better than anyone else. Pay no attention

friendsDisUnited · 04/10/2025 19:52

@TeapotTallulah insurance premiums are based on reported crimes in the area.

greengreyblue · 04/10/2025 18:04

So super rural?

Not really, 3 miles from nearest town, within 10 miles of a major town and less than 50 miles from Glasgow.

Pricelessadvice · 04/10/2025 19:55

I never go anywhere without my phone. It’s my safety net if I ever got into problems. I did also have to once dial my own ambulance from it when I broke several bones and was alone.

PrincessSakura · 04/10/2025 19:56

OP when you go out are you using public transport? If you are using your car you’d already have your keys with you so why wouldn’t you lock your door? I live in the countryside and it’s fairly safe but even I wouldn’t go out with ensuring everything is locked, it seems odd to take the risk?

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 04/10/2025 20:00

I don’t lock my doors when I go out, but I do take my phone everywhere.

ttcat37 · 04/10/2025 20:01

Well I guess competitive backwardness is a change from the usual competitive undereating on mn. Weird flex, but ok

Favourites8 · 04/10/2025 20:03

Yes I do tbh you never know what might happen when you’re out

Is this where the rock you’ve been living under for 20 years is?

50 years more like. 😆

ttcat37 · 04/10/2025 20:06

And just for anyone who says they never lock their doors. I used to live in a small-ish village of around 350 people. Not middle of nowhere, not a big village. A resident was just nodding off one night and a bloke jumped out the wardrobe. He was caught- he was a burglar who let himself in through her unlocked door and when he was disturbed he hid in her wardrobe and had been there for hours.

ItsNotYou852 · 04/10/2025 20:10

Well I'm under OPs rock too!
If it wasn't for my Kindle app being on it I wouldn't look at my phone for days on end, as people often complain about when trying to get hold of me.
I am trying to get more into the habit of carrying out on dog walks for safety, but rarely remember 🤔

Luna6 · 04/10/2025 20:11

You are being naive. A smart phone is more than a phone these days. I take it on a walk to monitor how many steps I do. I take it shopping because I have my credit card and store cards on it. I take it in the car to use the sat nav, etc etc. I think you are just being deliberately goady.

Barney16 · 04/10/2025 20:16

Yes, have phone on me always. I don't know anyone who doesn't tbh.
