What do you do with odd socks and earrings?

Socks: Do you hang on to them in the hope of locating their partners?
How long do you wait?
Do you ruthlessly chuck em out?

Earrings: Do you wear odd ones together? Do you turn them into other things?

What other odd things do you have around the house?

They go in the bin. I had a declutter recently and now I’m ruthless 😂

AntiBullshit · 04/10/2025 11:05

i don’t pair sock we all wear which ever 2 we pick out first.

vare · 04/10/2025 11:05

That’s good. We have a basket full and I’m always a bit hesitant to tip them out.

I only have plain black and plain white socks, so pairing them isn’t an issue. If there’s a stray one it just goes in the drawer with the others until a second stray one of the same colour shows up to join it!

BlueberryLatte · 04/10/2025 11:11

I keep them in a separate pile in the hopes I'll find the other half. For earrings it's a little dish rather than a pile obviously.

If the other halves don't turn up, I bin the earrings and bring socks to textile recycling.

BabyCat2020z · 04/10/2025 11:12

Earrings could be turned into a pendant but depends on design/ value whether worth it. Socks, just wear with another odd sock if not visible.

notthatoldchestnut · 04/10/2025 11:13

I have black socks for everyone from the sock shop. They are all paired as they come out of the dryer. If there’s an odd one it sits on the side ready for the next load to come out of the dryer.

I deliberately wear odd earrings and have done for years. Some brands eg And Other Stories sell mismatched pairs

Ditto socks but only the same style. I have several pairs of lurex socks by Cos. I pair up whichever lurex sock that comes to hand

Autumn1990 · 04/10/2025 11:16

Odd and holey socks are used as dusters and then thrown away.

Mymanyellow · 04/10/2025 11:17

I’ll hang on to socks for a couple more loads but I just Chuck after that. Can’t wear odd ones.

Randomchat · 04/10/2025 11:18

Ds doesnt care if his socks match so any odd ones go in a bag hanging on our bedroom door. If I've done a few washes and the pair hasn't turned up I put the odd one in ds's drawer.

And no-one wears earrings in our house so we're good on that score

Lovetosurf · 04/10/2025 11:22

I keep a small bag to store odd socks for a couple of months than they go to textile recycling if the other half doesn't turn up.
Very annoyed recently when a very nice sock turned up in the corner of a duvet cover, but the matching one had already gone to recycling! 🙄

soupyspoon · 04/10/2025 11:26

Earrings I wouldnt keep

Socks, I hold on to and hope the other one turns up. Then it doesnt turn up. Then I chuck it. Then the other one turns up

Squishydishy · 04/10/2025 11:27

Have an odd sock bag in my wardrobe. Keep them about a year and then do a big pile of fabric in those fabric recycling bins.
Earrings, I have an earring graveyard. Never chucked, probably need to

Squidgoals · 04/10/2025 11:33

I leave the odd socks in the airing cupboard in the expectation that the other one will eventually return to this dimension. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. A couple of times the bastards have turned up years after I’ve thrown the singleton away.

😂 this happens to me too! Just where do the little sods hide?

I'm glad it's not just me with a basket of odds. I have two sporty teens and gym obsessed DH and we must wash 40+ pairs of socks a week. Sounds insane when you think about it.

Earrings - I love earrings and I can't say I've ever lost any I don't think, so not an issue!

ThreePears · 04/10/2025 12:14

Odd socks go in a carrier bag in the airing cupboard, which is brought out when it is full so we can match up the random pairs with their twin. Usually by that stage they are both in there. At the bottom there is a bright orange one of mine that must have been in there about 20 years. I haven't the heart to throw it out now, it's like an old friend! And I know if I do, its mate will turn up soon afterwards.😂

I don't wear earrings, and no other earring-wearers in the house so no odd ones.

butimamonstersaidthemonster · 04/10/2025 12:36

We have an odd sock basket. Any odd socks go in there and then every so often I go through and put them up. Usually still have 10 or so left at the end.
not sure about earrings. I think I just leave them but never wear them.

Netcurtainnelly · 04/10/2025 12:52

Where do all the odd socks go it's mad.

I've actually lost a shoe. In my house. Where?

BogRollBOGOF · 04/10/2025 16:30

I had a running sock turn up in a little-used sleeping bag. It looks ridiculously luridly bright compared to its well-worn peers. I tend to buy a batch at a time so had kept wearing the others.

N0Tfunny · 04/10/2025 16:35

I save them for a few months in case their parther turns up. Then I give them to my children’s nursery / school and they make sock puppets from them.

40? You’re tempting fate there! I hope you just have lots of pairs of identicals. I had to persuade DH to stop buying socks marked L and R because it was ridiculous that he kept ending up with two or three lonely lefts. Because there’s no way he could ever be expected to wear a L sock on a R foot 🙄

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/10/2025 16:46

I once counted 76 odd socks (4 of us) - kept them all together in a bag in case partners turned up. Eventually sent them off to textile recycling. so I hope not entirely wasted.

HippyChickMama · 04/10/2025 17:08

We have a basket in the utility room and odd socks go in there. Every so often, I give the basket to dd and she pairs them up because she enjoys doing it, strange child.
Earrings go back in jewellery cabinet thing in the hope that the other turns up, if I know it won’t because I lost one while out, I will throw the other one away as most of my earrings are inexpensive. I would have to reconsider if they were genuine diamonds or something though
