Moving to Halifax? Lancaster? North East?

I wonder if anyone could offer any advice. I am going to be moving from Manchester. I am retired so I can live anywhere, but I'm looking for somewhere in the north. I would like somewhere fairly near nice countryside or a nice beach for walks, that is friendly, and has a historic feel.
My budget is around £200k. I need 2 bedrooms, 3 would be better. Schools don't matter as I have no school aged children.
I've only just started looking into areas and am looking online at Halifax, Lancaster, Newcastle/Tyneside, Blyth, Amble, Carlisle, Berwick, Hull. but am open to other suggestions. Does anyone have any advice about any of these places? Thanks! 😊

I especially love the area of Northumberland around Bamburgh. Seahouses is a really lovely place with all amenities you need. The coast along there is magnificent.

spanieleyes · 03/10/2025 20:13

Avoid Halifax!

Thanks! I do love the Northumberland coast having been there for a holiday

Avoid Halifax!

Why? I've heard good things 🙂

Lancaster is great- small enough for a community feel, great music scene and independent shops, 10 minute drive to Morecambe and the sea, walks and beautiful countryside in every direction

Thanks that sounds lovely! Do you know anything about the Skerton area, it looked the most affordable.

I have had lovely holidays in both Halifax and Lancaster. I reckon you would be best to stay in any place you are considering and will find the good and possibly bad issues to the place.

Depends where exactly, but there's a reason Skerton is cheaper.
What sort of property are you thinking? Flat, bungalow, terraced? What about Morecambe or Heysham? Bare is by the seaside, lovely local businesses, and has really good transport links.

QuirkyHorse · 03/10/2025 21:02

I'd be looking at Otley or Ilkley over Halifax.

I'm hoping for a house rather than a flat, terraced would be fine but I would ideally like a garden or at least a decent sized yard. 🙂 I'll have a look into those, thank-you!

Thanks! I think they may be a bit expensive for me unfortunately.

Have you taken a tour round to see different places?
There are some lovely towns that you might not have considered.

Thanks! No I'm just looking online at the moment but once I've narrowed it down I will have a look at a few places. A big tour round the north would be good but not really doable for me unfortunately. 🙂

Amble and Newbiggin are the best value coastal towns, quite traditional still. You'll get something nice for your money in Ryton, Chester le Street perhaps Morpeth as well. All small towns with good transport links.

WhereTheWaldThingsAre · 03/10/2025 21:32

Skipton might be worth a look, sounds like it fits the brief. It has lots of little Victorian terraces around the town centre that would be in budget.

I'm from Manchester and live in Bare now so obviously slightly biased, but it is by choice!

It’s cheap for a reason. You’d be best visiting and driving around, it’s a small city centred on a one way system so not too huge to navigate.

This is a nice part of town: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/150799964#/?channel=RES_BUY

Todmorden ticks all your boxes, and is close enough to Halifax to visit the good bits there.

Clitheroe. Penrith - the Eden Valley is lovely and you have easy access to some of the Lake District from Penrith. I’m fond of Cockermouth, but don’t think your budget will go very far there, plus it doesn’t have trains. Ulverston’s great but perhaps a tad far from anywhere. Morpeth - not on the Northumberland coast but close, and with good links to Newcastle. Hexham, kind of ditto, but more expensive, I think.

nagnagnag · 03/10/2025 22:10

How about Rothbury? It’s smaller than the places you’ve mentioned but has good facilities and it’s a lovely place surrounded by other lovely places. Not far from the sea and near Cragside.

The Ribble Valley, especially Whalley/Clitheroe may work well, they’re both lovely places to live. Further north, I have family members who have recently moved to Grange-over-Sands, which having visited, albeit during the beautiful summer weather, is something of a hidden gem and property is cheaper than it is within the Lake District National Park. Arnside is across the bay from Grange, and according to said family members is equally lovely, although I haven’t ever been there so can’t speak from personal experience.
