Moving to Halifax? Lancaster? North East?

I wonder if anyone could offer any advice. I am going to be moving from Manchester. I am retired so I can live anywhere, but I'm looking for somewhere in the north. I would like somewhere fairly near nice countryside or a nice beach for walks, that is friendly, and has a historic feel.
My budget is around £200k. I need 2 bedrooms, 3 would be better. Schools don't matter as I have no school aged children.
I've only just started looking into areas and am looking online at Halifax, Lancaster, Newcastle/Tyneside, Blyth, Amble, Carlisle, Berwick, Hull. but am open to other suggestions. Does anyone have any advice about any of these places? Thanks! 😊

Please go visit the area around Peoples Park if you are considering buying round there.I know the area well, I went to school there and I have to visit for work. It is not a safe area.Lots of drug related activities, recently a house exploded due to the cooking of drugs in the terrace. We visit in pairs at work as it’s as rough as fuck. Not a safe place for women at all especially after dark. I’ve lived in Muslim areas in Birmingham and never felt unsafe. This place is different.

Slightly over your £200k budget but what about this end terrace in south Lancs?

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/166523489#/

It is on a main road (busy in daytime but not at night) but it’s also within a few mins of lots of lovely country walks (and canalside walks too), not far from the coast and is in a friendly village with great transport connections. It’s a very popular/desirable village. And importantly, there’s a Booths in nearby Chorley!

That looks lovely, thank you! 💜

Thanks that sounds lovely! Do you know anything about the Skerton area, it looked the most affordable.

we moved to Morecambe a few years ago and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else!

Bare or Heysham I would say. Skerton is cheaper for a reason. Lancaster is a cute little town centre too! The views over Morecambe bay are Beautiful and you have the lakes just around the corner!

But not Skerton. Mischief night lasts most of the year …

You need to be south of the river. Freehold is nice as is the centre of the city and the area around St Martins - still get quite a bit for £200k. Also around Giant Axe football ground is affordable.

That's good to know, thank you! 🙂

Heysham might have something in your budget. Close to Lancaster, but by the sea. Skerton, I’d avoid personally.

Not for a teenager perhaps but plenty of people live there happily - countryside, low crime, lots of walks, community activities. Depends what you want out of life.

A job?

Great for retirees, well unless you need a hospital or regular public transport.
My Mum retired away as well, back to civilisation
As I said, lovely spot for a visit/holiday but I wouldn't recommend moving there

Beverley, seven miles out of Hull?

The OP wanted recommendations based on the fact that she is retired (no job required). She wanted friendly, countryside, historic feel. Weardale may not be for you but it’s ticking alot of her boxes therefore I feel justified in recommending it.

Ripponden is nice but traffic can be bad, especially if the Motorway is closed

Of course and she could consider it
I just wanted her to understand how remote it is

The Ribble Valley, especially Whalley/Clitheroe may work well, they’re both lovely places to live. Further north, I have family members who have recently moved to Grange-over-Sands, which having visited, albeit during the beautiful summer weather, is something of a hidden gem and property is cheaper than it is within the Lake District National Park. Arnside is across the bay from Grange, and according to said family members is equally lovely, although I haven’t ever been there so can’t speak from personal experience.

Arnside is lovely!

Rosem9 · 04/10/2025 19:23

Thankyou! 💜

Thanks! I'll look into those places! 😊

I live in Calderdale and would recommend you look at Barkisland, Norland, Greetland, Stainland or West Vale, all set in beautiful countryside but within circa 5 miles of Halifax town. Personally, I wouldn't choose to live in the Todmorden or Hebden Bridge areas because, lovely as they are, they are in flood risk areas.

I work in Halifax town. It's a friendly place with plenty of decent shops and some stunning architecture, my favourite being Halifax Minster.

Good luck!

I came on to say just this. When there's an accident on the M62, all traffic traips through the (already busy) village and nearby Sowerby Bridge.

Winnertrinner · 04/10/2025 19:58

Do you need good train or motorway access to go to visit friends and family regularly? If so where do you need to get to - and would visits be a day trip return or for a weekend?

Similarly do you hope friends and family will come to visit you by train / or car and does it need to be day tripable

If so, does this give you max radius to search in?
