Moving to Halifax? Lancaster? North East?

I wonder if anyone could offer any advice. I am going to be moving from Manchester. I am retired so I can live anywhere, but I'm looking for somewhere in the north. I would like somewhere fairly near nice countryside or a nice beach for walks, that is friendly, and has a historic feel.
My budget is around £200k. I need 2 bedrooms, 3 would be better. Schools don't matter as I have no school aged children.
I've only just started looking into areas and am looking online at Halifax, Lancaster, Newcastle/Tyneside, Blyth, Amble, Carlisle, Berwick, Hull. but am open to other suggestions. Does anyone have any advice about any of these places? Thanks! 😊

The other place worth considering is areas around Huddersfield, there are some lovely villages and countryside outside of Huddersfield, for example Slaithwaite, Honey, Farnley Tyas, Shepley, Skelmanthorpe and so on in that area.

Do you need good train or motorway access to go to visit friends and family regularly? If so where do you need to get to - and would visits be a day trip return or for a weekend?

Similarly do you hope friends and family will come to visit you by train / or car and does it need to be day tripable

If so, does this give you max radius to search in?

Yes I have friends in Manchester, family in York, Bradford, Blackburn and Newcastle. They'll be coming to stay sometimes and I'll be going to them too. 🙂

Thank you I'll look into all of those! 🙂

But not Skerton. Mischief night lasts most of the year …

You need to be south of the river. Freehold is nice as is the centre of the city and the area around St Martins - still get quite a bit for £200k. Also around Giant Axe football ground is affordable.

by St Martins she means the University of Cumbria
I agree you need to be south of the river. One of the good things about Lancaster is the size, from many residential areas you can easily walk to the town centre, from north of the river its much more of a trek and that's without other considerations.
Be aware that period terraced houses often have a small yard rather than a garden.

This one is in the Scale Hall area of Lancaster and seems to offer what you’re looking for. Just up the road from, but much nicer than Skerton.

Wouldn’t touch it
it’s built on hill steps up to it but the big issue is the entire garden is supported by a 6 ft high retaining wall

ThePieceHall · 05/10/2025 18:37

I come back to Hebden Bridge. £90 million is being invested in flood defences. I’d seek out one of the hilltop villages such as Old Town or Heptonstall, the burial place of Sylvia Plath. Both equally beautiful and both thriving communities. If either of these villages flooded, you would expect Noah to be sailing past in his ark. For those mentioning Huddersfield, I will just point out that Huddersfield railway station is officially the worst in the country for cancelled trains. The OP mentions needing to travel to Manchester, Bradford and York (from memory). These are all direct trains from Hebden Bridge. OP, the only nice place to look in Halifax is Savile Park. The town centre is a shit show, my nine-year-old is too scared to go there as there are always drunks and homeless people having fights in broad daylight. The only redeeming feature of Halifax town centre is the Piece Hall.

Lol. Skircoat Green and Copley areas are fine too. Plus any of the villages outside Halifax.

While I agree about Huddersfield Trains A LOT of money is being spent on improving the station and the routes in and out
Also while delays etc are a pain if you are communting daily they aren't a major issue if you are using the train once in a while

Frightenedbunny · 05/10/2025 18:48

Skerton isn’t great, op.

With a budget of £200k, there’s some nice areas of Morecambe and heysham or bare. Avoid the west end of Morecambe!

Lancaster is beautiful. I moved here for uni in the 90’s and never left. It’s handy for beach, Lake District and on a central train line and only 2 hours from London.

lancaster has a great vibe, lots of independent cafes and restaurants. I love it.

Theres a few houses in South Lancaster that meets your budget. Have a look around the LA1 postcode.

ThePieceHall · 05/10/2025 18:53

Has anyone mentioned Haworth? The home of the Brontë Parsonage?

Yes, Haworth and nearby Oxenhope are also good places to consider

Completely ridiculous assertions. Do you live in Hebden Bridge by any chance?

Why ridiculous?

TheMightyFax · 05/10/2025 22:01

Because there are plenty of decent places to live in Halifax but the chances are you never visit them or know people that live there, (possibly because they’re working class areas?) but you’re asserting here that there is only ONE area that’s worthy of recommendation.
You're entitled to think that but I doubt it’s based on experience of actually living in those places which is why I think it’s ridiculous.

What do you know about my class? Now who’s making ridiculous assertions.
