Moving to Halifax? Lancaster? North East?

I wonder if anyone could offer any advice. I am going to be moving from Manchester. I am retired so I can live anywhere, but I'm looking for somewhere in the north. I would like somewhere fairly near nice countryside or a nice beach for walks, that is friendly, and has a historic feel.
My budget is around £200k. I need 2 bedrooms, 3 would be better. Schools don't matter as I have no school aged children.
I've only just started looking into areas and am looking online at Halifax, Lancaster, Newcastle/Tyneside, Blyth, Amble, Carlisle, Berwick, Hull. but am open to other suggestions. Does anyone have any advice about any of these places? Thanks! 😊

How about Rothbury? It’s smaller than the places you’ve mentioned but has good facilities and it’s a lovely place surrounded by other lovely places. Not far from the sea and near Cragside.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of Rothbury, that does sound nice, I'll have a look! 😊

The Ribble Valley, especially Whalley/Clitheroe may work well, they’re both lovely places to live. Further north, I have family members who have recently moved to Grange-over-Sands, which having visited, albeit during the beautiful summer weather, is something of a hidden gem and property is cheaper than it is within the Lake District National Park. Arnside is across the bay from Grange, and according to said family members is equally lovely, although I haven’t ever been there so can’t speak from personal experience.

Thanks! They all definitely sound worth a look! 😊

Skipton is lovely, the terraced houses are small but cute and well within budget. You also have easy access to the Dales!

MaterMoribund · 04/10/2025 06:56

How about Wooler, Northumberland? Beautiful surroundings, not too far from the coastal areas, lovely community with a good mix of facilities.

Pootles34 · 04/10/2025 07:03

Entirely agree with Skipton. Lovely little town, amazing countryside.

Menopausalsourpuss · 04/10/2025 07:19

It depends what you value, I live near Lancaster (relocated from South East 3 years ago) and love the countryside ( you can walk into fields with sheep and stone walls from Lancaster without getting in the car), view of mountains and sea nearby but also like Skipton - seems very friendly and also near lovely Yorkshire rivers, waterfalls, Bolton Abbey etc.

Hello - Halifax resident here.
Its in part, a very beautiful town with lots of history and areas to live - but also areas NOT to live, but probably by looking at an area you will see that.
Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Greetland, Rastrick and Stump Cross (near Gentleman Jack area) are lovely- don't rule it out OP.

I'd be looking at Otley or Ilkley over Halifax.

For 200k?! No chance.

Thanks! Do you mind me asking which areas are the ones to avoid? When I was looking on rightmove I saw some nice cheap houses in boothtown and one I don't know what the area was called but it was near a park called the people's park? Are they bad areas? 🙂

Probably Mixenden, Ovenden, Pellon, and near the town centre. My son lives in Mytholmroyd, and it is the most beautiful place, and you can walk on the canal path the Hebden Bridge where they have the shops you would have had going back 50 years - sweet shops, butchers who make their own pies and pasties, and the quirky shops where people come from miles to see.

DenDenDenise · 04/10/2025 09:52

Plus in Halifax there is the Piece Hall (17th Century) - which is the most incredible music venue - it's been transformed, again little shops you would not find anywhere else, farmers markets and an incredible Christmas market - atmosphere is lovely.

Born and raised in Halifax and now live in NE

Boothtown is all right, there are some nice old houses there. It's quite convenient.

The area round People's Park is very much geared to Muslim culture - Muslim shops and takeaways, and several mosques are located there - most people who live around there seem to be Muslims. I'm not a Muslim and have never felt unsafe walking there or anything like that, people are friendly, but I might feel out of place if I had a house there.

PP has mentioned some good areas. I'd add Skircoat Green which is really nice but expensive, not sure you would get what you need for your budget.

TheMightyFax · 04/10/2025 10:18

Boothtown is fine, it’s walkable from town. The areas around Peoples Park are very dodgy, I feel quite unsafe walking round there and trying to drive round there is bloody scary.
Hebden Bridge is full of BBC types who have moved up from London so the house prices could be out of your budget.
Halifax like most places has its good and bad points. Good points are the Piece Hall, lots of history, excellent walking and beautiful view whilst being close to both Leeds and Manchester.
The down side is the hills mean it can be bleak in winter, it rains a lot, and if there’s so much as a sniff of snow, everything grinds to a halt. The high hills forces all the transport into the valleys so the roads are congested and in poor repair due to high volume of vehicle and the weather.

I miss the hills 🤣

TheMightyFax · 04/10/2025 10:48

Aye, I returned after living away as there’s just something about these hills that are so reassuring

Avoid Halifax!

Why?
I grew up there and it was not great but its changed a lot

I live rural NE and laugh when people complain about the hills, at 3 years old I was happily walking up cobbled hills around Copley that make the hills in the NE look like speed bumps!
The scenery is stunning and I do miss it.
I don't miss the bone chilling damp cold from Oct-April

Ignore them, there are some lovely parts around Halifax however the lovely parts aren't cheap!

Don't move near Peoples Park
I grew up in Halifax but now work as a Relo agent all across The North and I have relocated people to both Halifax and Huddersfield.
If you want to PM me specific streets or similar I would be happy to give an opinion

TheMightyFax · 04/10/2025 10:56

Copley is nice too OP, thank you for the reminder @twistyizzy Good bus links, a cricket and rugby club, proper locals pub and direct access to the canal network for walks

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/10/2025 11:03

Slightly over your £200k budget but what about this end terrace in south Lancs?

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/166523489#/

It is on a main road (busy in daytime but not at night) but it’s also within a few mins of lots of lovely country walks (and canalside walks too), not far from the coast and is in a friendly village with great transport connections. It’s a very popular/desirable village. And importantly, there’s a Booths in nearby Chorley!

Check out this 3 bedroom terraced house for sale on Rightmove

Thanks that sounds lovely! Do you know anything about the Skerton area, it looked the most affordable.

Yeah keep away from from it

The point being that the Ops budget wouldnt get her a property in the lovely parts of Halifax, and the bad parts are really bad!

CherryBlossom321 · 04/10/2025 16:57

This one is in the Scale Hall area of Lancaster and seems to offer what you’re looking for. Just up the road from, but much nicer than Skerton.
