Does anyone else LOVE winter?

I’m so excited the nights are drawing in. I love winter. I love it getting dark early. šŸŒ™ Love candles šŸ•Æļø and the fire on. šŸ”„ I love the orange leaves on the ground.

For me also I’m less busy at work. It’s my husbands birthday and mine and my adult kids too. We go away on holiday in winter.

And of course there’s Christmas…..šŸŽ…

I have winter nostalgia, my parents had a cottage in the Dales so it was always hiking, log fires, frozen becks, making a snowman in the garden, finding conkers and sloes, Christmas presents etc.

Our current reality is a drafty flat in a rainy city so I don't enjoy it as an adult.

I love this time of year, when things cool down and TV gets better and it doesn't seem so awful to be sat in front if it 🤣, but I'm always glad when Spring comes too.

Catpiece · 24/09/2025 09:41

Absolutely my favourite time of year. So excited to be wearing my coat out and about. Have two sets of fairy lights with autumn leaves on them. Candles. Throws and blankets and yesterday had a blast of the heating. So lovely and peaceful. Feel far more relaxed x

RampantIvy · 24/09/2025 10:15

So depressed at having to wear a coat instead of just leaving the house in what I'm wearing.

Arraminta · 24/09/2025 11:36

Yes, me. Having hated and endured the Summer, I come alive in September and love every moment through until late Spring.

For the first time this year I have fully embraced autumnal decor and it makes me so happy. I have a gorgeous, dark plum hydrangea wreath on our front door, and a twee table-scape of autumn foliage, a fairisle knitted pumpkin and candles on the kitchen table. A handful of little quartz mushrooms off Etsy is arriving today to add to the pretentiousness. DH rolls his eyes at me!

I made all our beds up with their winter weight duvets and brushed cotton bedding at the weekend, and have folded a throw at the foot of each bed. God knows why as our house is centrally heated but I like the cosy aesthetic.

I had a wine red gel manicure and pedicure last week, and moved all my Summer clothes into the guest room wardrobes. My wardrobe is now full of corduroy dresses, sweaters and kilt mini skirts. Have just ordered more Wolford opaque tights in black, brown and burgundy, and for those who wince at the price I have pairs that are 4 years old and still look as good as new! Worth every penny.

Happy. Happy. Happy.

RampantIvy · 24/09/2025 11:59

I don't bother with pedicures in winter because no-one sees my feet. I look after my feet and cut my nails etc. I just don't bother with nail polish.

Jellycatspyjamas · 24/09/2025 13:46

Yes, though I’m having work done in the house this year so it’s in uproar instead of the usual candles and fairy lights. I’ve started a winter craft - I’m crocheting a blanket and am in full soups and casseroles batch cooking mode. I’ve got my boots and autumn dresses in the wardrobe and haven’t shaved my legs this week. Bloody love winter.

I always wonder if the winter snugglers of MN have to get up at 6,30 on a cold dark morning and actually ever leave their cosy candle lit houses to go work.

Yes, I’m up at 6.00 every morning, out walking the dog til 7 and then school run. A cold, wet early morning walk isn’t my most favourite thing but it’s the price of owning a dog, who is my favourite thing. I still prefer winter.

AliceMaforethought · 24/09/2025 14:18

Why do the moaners and naysayers assume that those of us who love autumn and winter are somehow lying and delusional? I could say the same sort of things about summer lovers that you always see on these threads about autumn: that summer is all very well when it is actually sunny and bright, but all too often it is grey and miserable. At least if autumn is cool and grey, there are compensations. If summer is crap, it is just terribly depressing.

Before I retired I was up at 5.10am scraping the ice off the car in very cold weather. Still preferred it to the heat.

OMG are you me!? I too love Wolford and also Falke. I also love a tartan mini. I bought a Donegal tweed suit the other day which is just amazing, it makes me feel that I need to make a raised game pie! I truly come alive during this season.

PlaceIntheClouds · 24/09/2025 14:40

September and October are okay I guess. I dislike November up until mid December where Christmas becomes a distraction.

I get a bit happier come January when the days get ever so slightly longer again.

Isn't it!? So perfectly encapsulates how we autumn and winter lovers feel. Lord, it isn't actually until this moment that I realise how much I had just been tolerating summer. Bleugh. Such a cheap, dull season.

coxesorangepippin · 24/09/2025 15:10

I love it. The cold, the snow, the frost, the light.

Poirot1983 · 24/09/2025 15:11

Mixed feelings having had some not very nice things happen during bad weather (car skidding, being snowed in and unable to reach a very unwell loved one to more trivial stuff like expensive repairs to fencing down from strong winds).

sanityisamyth · 24/09/2025 19:27

It’s awful. There’s not one positive thing I can think of. Autumn and winter make me want to cry.

That's how I feel about summer and hot weather.

Netcurtainnelly · 24/09/2025 22:24

No hate it, and can understand why people go to warmer climates in the winter.
If I could make it happen, I'd have two seasons only. Spring and Summer.

I just think of July & August as dusty, listless months where flies buzz incessantly and the heat makes it harder to sleep.

Yup. Also here on the west coast of Scotland - MIDGES. The ultimate irritant and frequent summer companion.

Urgh! I once spent the August Bank Holiday on Loch Lomond. The midges were flying in vast swarms like some crazed Scottish, insectoid bomber command. Totally ruined the break and we came home a day early.

Peculiah · 25/09/2025 10:23

I prefer Spring and Autumn to the extremes of Winter and Summer, but at least in Winter it’s a bit easier to warm up the house than it is to cool it in summer.

@fastingforweightloss do you know about the annual Nigel Slater read-a-long on the Christmas board?

cygnusgenie · 25/09/2025 10:25

I like elements of all the seasons, they are all necessary. But I love summer best. Light clothes, long days, swimming, sitting in the garden for hours.
