White bonbons or Riley’s Chocolate Toffee Rolls (an NI thing - long gone, much missed)

I came on here exactly to ask for a quarter of Rileys Toffee Rolls, in a nice white paper bag rolled into ears at the corners. Happy memories of my grandparents. 😊💕

Not NI as it happens - they were originally made in Halifax. Nowadays produced by the niece of the founders according to Wikipedia.

Liquorice comfits please. But if they don’t have any can I have liquorice torpedoes and I can use the red ones a lipstick.

tinytemper66 · 21/09/2025 19:26

Yorkshire mix )although we used to call it Swansea mix)

BitSilly · 21/09/2025 19:29

@PyongyangKipperbang
Good point!
Same vintage as you but we have a Mr Simms in our town, and my youngest DC11 loves going in and has heard me bang on about tell them how we used to go into sweet shops and ask for "a quarter of this" and how we could even buy things for "two a penny" so they kind of get it.

I'll have a pack of sweet cigarettes, a packet of orange Spangles and a packet of Rolos, please.

I really liked Coltsfoot Rock.

Is that a bit Iike Fisherman's Friend?

I wonder what the average age of respondents is on this thread! I am 52 and would be amazed if anyone under 40 even understood the question.

Just asked my 14 yr old daughter if she knew what I was asking "I am nipping out, would you like a quarter of something?" and she looked really confused and said it sounded like something to do with drugs, which is funny and sad at the same time!

Yep, I'm 54 and remember all the sweets mentioned.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 21/09/2025 19:31

Shrimps please!

Flakey99 · 21/09/2025 19:32

Bonfire tuffy for me please. 😁

Blarn · 21/09/2025 17:54

Aniseed balls or those little rectangular butterscotch thar came individually wrapped. They were similar to werthers originals but much better.

Yes, I remember those, I think they came in packets of 12 in cardboard boxes. Does Callard & Bowser ring a bell with you, @Blarn?

I wonder if they still taste the same where they cleared your sinuses and your innards out, and stripped wallpaper at the same time!

How about a whole Mars Bar ?
The size they used to be, I'm not greedy.
DM used to buy one & cut it up to feed 4 of us.
Little bro used to get the biggest slice as "he's a growing lad".

Ihateboris · 21/09/2025 19:34

Does anyone remember the Texan Bar?

harriethoyle · 21/09/2025 19:36

I used to LOVE the fake sugar cigarettes. Complete in paper pack. But can only remember getting them up to about 7 so they must have been outlawed early 🤣🙈

Yorkshire mix )although we used to call it Swansea mix)

We called it Swansea Mix too and they still sell it in Swansea Market. I’ve got the day off tomorrow, I might pop down… www.swanseaindoormarket.co.uk/market-stalls/bakery-confectionery/arlenes-sweetie-jar/

RaraRachael · 21/09/2025 19:37

Soor plooms or lucky tatties with a packet of sweetie fags on the side please 😅

Can I add many some Caramac bars, please?

Just looked up Chelsea Whoppers. Oh my.

The Chelsea Whopper is very difficult to describe but utterly delicious. Not too sweet, a slightly fudgy texture. Soooo good! Could I trade you one for a bit of your Caramac?

BitSilly · 21/09/2025 19:38

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends

Your mum's sweet version of the famous Mumsnet chicken! - I'm impressed 😊

Toffee crumble!! I spent my dinner money on that through secondary school (now a size 20 to prove it 😬)

lalaloopyhead · 21/09/2025 19:39

Im a bit skint, so can I just have 2oz of sherbet pips? I reckon 11p should cover it if they haven't gone up since I last bought them 😁
