Media is quiet on Farage's ally an friend

“Our investigation uncovered that an elected MEP was taking payments to peddle narratives beneficial to Russian interests... This case goes to the heart of our democratic values.”

yes the coverage of Nathan Gill is fascinating.

It popped up on the Times app but I was looking for something else and thought I'd read it later. But it's vanished altogether.

Which is odd. I suspect if the same crimes were linked to for example the Labour leader in Wales it would have remained a front page story for more than a couple of hours.

absolutely horrifying.

Also rather dispels the “it’s all single men” narrative as well backing up why it’s mostly men who make the crossing first.

It’s fatally risky. These are desperate people and I fail to see why people cannot fathom this.

Yet another Reform thread on here - tired of being polite about them now though!
I read somewhere that Labour trying to appease Reform voters (with immigration) are sending their voters to Reform. I think this can be true - after all if you’re offering similar and folk like that, but Regorm say they’ll do it bigliest, betterest and faster than anything ever has happened then you’re going to go there.
It’s dreadful though the hype, money?, pushing the Reform agenda.

Homeless have terrible times trying to get bank a/cs

It's a rather odd thing to say that rather than solving homelessness, we should make it easier for the homeless to have bank accounts.

I can see that "freedom" being abused by a cruel state.

Or to put it another way.: If I am homeless, then being able to have a bank account is rather the least of my worries.

Yes I guess - but to get any benefits they need one. Plus some may be ready to be homes, work etc but it’s hard without a bank a/c so a barrier to getting off the streets.
Some will never realistically leave the streets but at least they can then access cash/benefits.
There are schemes to assist with the bank a/c but they don’t cover everyone/everything.

I think Labour is more likely to lose voters to Lib Dem or Greens than Reform, the 'they made me vote Reform' is a handy excuse, like 'but Corbyn'.

It's getting harder for them to deny the racism

So sad - we need safe and legal routes really but apparently that will happen when the boats are stopped/nearly stopped - whenever that would be (seems perverse when these may reduce boats), and obviously it wouldn’t happen at all under our next apparent government that many just cannot wait to get - sigh.

Generally, I think Greens/Lib Dems are more attractive to the left of centre. But as there were voters who got sick of the Tories and either tried Labour again, or for the first time then they may go Refirm.
There’s a disconnect now I feel with traditional voters who felt they were working class people using unions, voting Labour, wanting social stuff and left wing ideas, but now they are equally feeling disenfranchised and being keen on brexit and reform ideas which are much more right wing - it’s a mix up really and hard I guess to manage as in understanding or being able to deliver to your original voter base.

DuncinToffee · 27/09/2025 15:01

I remember reading that it is more the middle class in less diverse areas turning to Reform.

I'll see if I can find it again to see if I remembered correctly.

I wish we would never lose compassion for the people who see no other way than by crossing on a dinghy.. Sadly some will as there is such a thing as empathy fatigue .
When you actually stop and think about crossing the channel on an over crowded dinghy it is horrific.
We need faster processing for sure and to allow properly documented people to start work as soon as they can , for their income, and to regain a sense of worth for themselves..
Labour are still doing way better than the Tories ever did and really, in my opinion , the Tories absolutely did make things so much worse.

Interesting thread from Emma Monk on Bluesky clarifying the Nathan Gill & Nigel Farage timeline (should be read in full really) -

“Then timings get interesting….

Farage quits UKIP 4th Dec 2018

Gill follows him on the 6th Dec

5 other UKIP MEPs follow Farage within days, including Nuttall (former UKIP leader, now deputy chairman of Reform)

All 6 join the Brexit party in Feb with Farage

By April, another 7 have switched

9/14

And the bribes Gill has admitted to?

6th Dec 2018 to 18th Jul 2019

6th Dec 2018 - the same day he followed Farage out of UKIP

He joined the Brexit Party with Farage in February 2019 and remained a Brexit party MEP until we left the EU.

In March 2021 he became Reform UK’s leader in Wales”

I’ve lived in diverse areas, and ‘very white, very straight’ areas as I term them to myself (no offence meant) - it is the less diverse areas that seem most upset by immigration- I wonder if it’s fear of the unknown?
However, I was in a much less than middle class area, with all the issues people have to contend with in ex pit village, maybe that’s not so surprising they go right (from labour till I die previously) The middle are now being squeezed economically more than they ever have been, so maybe that’s now a push to them to move right, or the collapse of the Tories?
Interesting.

A "core" Labour voter is never going to be swayed by a right wing rabble like Reform. In the same way union leaders weren't heading off defections to the National Front (reforms forebear) in the 70s. Remembering that a bunch of hairy arsed miners turned up at Grunwick to support older immigrant women in an industrial dispute

Grunwick dispute: What did the 'strikers in saris' achieve?

In 1976, a group of South Asian women took to the streets of London in revolt at poor working conditions at the Grunwick film processing factory. But what impact did their dispute ultimately have?

Good turnout for the counterprotests, including the NECA mayor. Some great placards, including this one.

Obligatory football reference from the leader of Newcastle City Council.

"I know that there was concern earlier this week when plans emerged for protests in the city that were not in keeping the values that Newcastle holds dear. Those values of love, unity and kindness that give Geordies the reputation we are so proud of.

"For some time, we have seen a growing rhetoric online and in the mainstream media that is built on a foundation of hate and discrimination. It is a rhetoric that was once called out for exactly what it is – racism and discrimination.

"It is a perpetuated by individuals seeking to divide communities, but who have no real ideas on how to improve the lives for our residents.

"Is the issue of immigration is something that deserves legitimate discussion and debate? Yes.

"But some would have you believe that turning our back on those fleeing prosecution will lead to more money in our pockets and access to better services. It is a fallacy perpetuated by strangers to our city and it must be called out.

"I received a lot of correspondence this week asking for me to take action to stop protests taking place. I was clear that this is a lawful right for all citizens and it is not my place, nor that of Northumbria Police, to shut it down.

"I want to express my gratitude to the council officers, the police and all other partner agencies in ensuring our city continued to operate during events today. I don’t underestimate the work that goes into ensuring the day passes without incident.

"I attended the counter post at the Monument and was pleased to see crowds of people preaching for unity and to ensure that anyone who wants to embrace our city and our values, deserves the right to be adopted as a Geordie.

"I am aware that despite such a show of positivity there will be many in our communities scared at the ongoing prevalence of racism and hate both online and in our communities. I want you to know that your council stands with you and that will never change.

"Newcastle will always be a city that stands shoulder to shoulder with the vulnerable and those in need. When times get tough, we are neighbours who have each other's back. We are strangers who provide refuge. We are a city of black and white, we are a city that will always be united."

Saucery · 27/09/2025 16:56

Our anti racism protest went well today but the racists had huge speakers and blaring out Sweet Caroline ffs 🙄

Those in the hotel gave peace and love hand signals at the window.
