@potato08 urgh, I think some of the people outside the hotels just want someone they can shout at who can't shout back.

DuncinToffee · 24/09/2025 20:52

Anyone from Boston, Lincs? According to Jenkyns you eat the ducks from the river

It's a her ( although she has a partner) and it's not in a garden. It's on the house. One of those that hangs off a big 45 degree pole, like it should be on something bigger than a 3 bed end terrace. The whole thing is bigger than the house !!

That sounds... Concerning and possibly dangerous. So is it sticking out into the the street?

They had (still do I guess) those 45 degree flag poles on most Dutch houses but people only tended to fly bags from the end when their kids left secondary school.

🙄love how the bird is slowly getting smaller. They'll be eating pigeons next (actually you can eat wood pigeon). I dont know much about Lincs but anyone trying to catch and eat something that's been swimming in the Thames is taking their life in their hands thanks to Thames water.

And they count all the swans every single year. So they would know for sure if they were being pilfered by hungry immigrants. Plus the rise in said immigrants being admitted to hospital with broken arms.

In reality, in general the people most likely to be hunting wildlife down to kill and eat it, are the posh country boys and rich finance types. Farage, Jenkins, Tice etc in other words. Lots of projection happening.

Piggywaspushed · 24/09/2025 21:07

No, it's sticking out over a shared drive.

At least it's in his garden I suppose. Do you think he will be diligent in taking it down properly every night and putting it up first thing in the morning as you are supposed to.

Personally, I would rather give the people flying flag bunting/flags outside their own houses the benefit of the doubt. It's possible they are motivated more by the "I want to celebrate my country" aspect than to start an argument/claim territory. And if their intention was the latter then not responding in the expected fashion is a better course. As the saying goes

"Smile, either you will make someone's day or piss them off. Either way you win"

I like the idea of reclaiming the flag for things like pride marches next year.

I should have taken a photo of the one I passed, yesterday. Every inch of the front of the house and garden covered in flags and bunting, with an Irish flag for good measure.

Do you remember when "clap for the NHS" morphed into "stand on the end of my street banging pans as loudly as I can while making a mental note of all the neighbours who aren't participating"? But guess I'm just a killjoy...

Edit:not the exact same thing for sure. But it reminded me urgh

Jenkyns and Tice are both saying Trump might be right about paracetamol.

I would expect nothing less from them.

It is the same sort of performative nonsense.

They are thicker than I thought. FFS. How can any intelligent person even think of voting for these utter 🤡 🤡 🤡

MsJinks · 24/09/2025 21:45

I had the misfortune to catch Iain Dale on LBC (though I like his question time thing sometimes) - anyway he said Farage had gone too far with his policies now and he could never vote for him. Apparently Ferrari also went after him in an interview today. If he’s turning these into leftie liberals then maybe there’s hope?
Dale, if anyone is interested, is going to stick with the Tories now, though not hopeful they will turn themselves around in his lifetime.

MsJinks · 24/09/2025 21:47

Other political news I heard is Andy Burnham would be interested in returning to Westminster and leading the party, but would need to be asked effectively rather than storm the doors.

cardibach · 24/09/2025 23:41

PickAChew · 24/09/2025 16:24

You reckon Manny did it? He's a good boy.

He’s a very good boy, if a bit of a speed walker…
He definitely wouldn’t be taken in by Farage. Far to clever.

placemats · 24/09/2025 23:58

Somebody put a union jack upside down on a lamppost. Nobody gave it a second thought. Night night

cardibach · 24/09/2025 23:59

That should say too clever, obvs.
I am also quite clever and wouldn’t make that mistake writing by hand…

Piggywaspushed · 25/09/2025 06:52

Nicola Sturgeon writes (briefly) about Burnham in her book. She doesn't automatically criticise opposition party politicians. Burnham has also probably matured and grown in stature since being mayor and since she worked alongside him. She is fulsome in her praise of Alan Johnson who she seems to admire more than any other politician for his abilities and contrasts him with AB , largely because he seemed not as meticulous, thoughtful, listening and , tellingly perhaps, not as good with civil servants as Johnson was.

I know some by default may not want to to hear what she says but she has no particular reason to say anything about Burnham so it's an objective assessment.

He is in a tricky spot now himself because he certainly doesn't want to do a David Miliband and come across as person before party and entitled. He seems to eb well aware of this himself,at least.

bombastix · 25/09/2025 10:45

Andy Burnham has overcooked it. An interview in the Telegraph!

What's the difference between those who supposedly eat ducks from the river and those who shoot ducks from the river? ( other than wealth and the wearing of tweed and barbour? )

placemats · 25/09/2025 10:53

Last night the CLP voted unanimously for Lucy Powell, whilst also acknowledging how fantastic Bridget Phillipson is.

Evenstar · 25/09/2025 11:30

Our CLP went for Lucy Powell too @placemats, but not unanimously

DuncinToffee · 25/09/2025 11:35

What swayed it for Lucy Powell?

OP posts:
Evenstar · 25/09/2025 11:42

@DuncinToffee I can’t speak for everyone, we used an anonymous voting system, but for DH and I it was that she was not in the cabinet and hopefully more able to listen to members and be our voice. That seemed to be similar for others who spoke in her favour.

One person didn’t want either, and there was one abstention when the votes were counted.

All the members get an individual vote as well next month.

placemats · 25/09/2025 11:43

I made the point that Powell has already shown leadership qualities in former ministerial roles and is a cohort of fantastic Labour MPs from the North West.

DuncinToffee · 25/09/2025 11:45

Very interesting, thank you.
