What do you prefer when buying a house?

CVVFan · 15/09/2025 16:13

I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority group that prefer either houses that are ready to move in or that are liveable for at least 2-3 years. I never buy based on a vision/project/putting my stamp on it.

We’re selling our house in 4 years, and quite frankly as much as it’s liveable for whoever buys it, it does look outdated.

I think we’re already on negative equity, so we think we’ll at least need to refresh the kitchen somehow (and possibly the bathrooms) the question is how much work is it sensible considering we’re selling it? The whole pint of the remedial work would be to sell it faster and not get cheeky offers because to some it might look more like a project than a liveable house.

This is like getting inside the head of my ND brother

I bet you’re counting down the days until the garage conversion! When are the builders starting?

That’s my Dhs responsibility. I just reminded him today. I deal with most other things at home, the least he can do is that

Ok so I think you can assume - no, not booked.

Why don’t you at least change the chandeliers? They were there when you moved in? And clear cupboard out. Today. Baby steps.

Scrummyfun · 07/10/2025 07:30

Your dh on NMW unskilled?

why doesn’t he use the next four years to improve his earning prospects?

I don’t mind them! Also my DH is a massive opposed of baby steps, which why we end up in the situations we end up. I am, even if tiny but I get zero traction as he’s more of the “either we solve it or nothing” approach.

So the plan for now is, once larder is here (any day today!) we’ll have a clear out and that will be a massive step

Nope, no window! After all it’s really so I can a working space and a gym

Without a window in the garage conversion, you're limiting it's resale appeal to a n8che group of people. Put a window in and you'll appeal to a wider market, recoup the money you've spent and sell faster.

Houses on both ends have done conversions.

one has done the full whack with window, the other one closer to what we need. Neither have sold.

Upthread you said only one had?

Scrummyfun · 07/10/2025 09:17

The neighbour who’s property currently for sale for £10k more than you bought…. Still on and no development?

Scrummyfun · 07/10/2025 09:16

well they have a door from the hallway and flooring (we missed that from the listing) and that’s a lot closer to what we want/need

of three carbon copies on the road, one sold quickly (lower asking price than what we paid for ours), one didn’t sell at all (around 10% higher than we paid for) and one is currently on the market.

the latter is the best thermometer to know how much we might be able to get based on renovated vs needs work

The one currently on the market…. It’s coming up to a month - under offer? Price dropped?

Doggybroc · 07/10/2025 14:32

The thread is so full of contradictions I have lost track.

But been covered at length so no point me throwing in my points aside from it seems odd to leave progressing the garage conversion to what sounds like a rather inept person on arranging things…. When the garage is going to be your office and gym primarily and you stand to benefit the most.

Because for better or for worse I’d do all admin and most planning around our family life, it’s exhausting and it’s the least he can do.

Yes but he hasn’t
and you’re going to be the one that suffers

A windowless garage that is too small to even fit a small car? And you’re spending £12k of a limited budget? This is presumably just to improve your quality of life rather than with any view to it increasing the value of the property presumably?

although looks like 4 years may pass and your DH still hasn’t got round to sorting anyway

That’s kind of the idea, yes. It’s mostly for easy access for storage
I would rather still use our eldest’s room as an office (once he goes to uni), but we’d have to get rid of the bed, so probably unlikely to happen.

You’re going to spend £12k on basically storage? What of?! If you’ve had no need for it for years… sell / charity it?

I thought it was for you… an office and a gym?

it’s a small space, and you’ll be back to square one if you fill it with “stuff”

We do have need for it! Literally I can’t use my shoes or bags or general stuff because it’s all gutted in either vacuum bags or suitcases.

And we’ve used the downstairs bathroom as a storage place.

id love to finally see all of my clothes/shoes in an organised way rather than in piles in cointainers/bags/suitcases that then I end up not wearing because I have no time so go through all of that to find my nice clothes.

but yes, once done we’ll also use it as an office/gym.

So this very small space is going to be storage, your office and your gym?

Bloobelly · 08/10/2025 14:41

But that’s presuming it will even happen.

Why don’t you just drop the builders a line to firm them up OP?!

Penguincushion · 09/10/2025 06:41

This very small conversion was meant to give you some kind of quality of life over putting up with the next 4 years of this op… but sounds like you’ll spend £12k on a storage container.

Maybe your husband sees that, hence him not doing anything to progress.

Nope, he’s just a massive procrastinator.

Actually pretty good. I always score extremely low in the screening tests.
