Should I wear a fascinator or not?

My DD is getting married in a hotel soon, and I've no idea whether to wear a fascinator or not.
I've looked on style threads and there's a mix of people saying they're dated, but then others say go for it! I've got in mind a navy dress to wear, and I was thinking of a contrasting colour head piece.
As MOB do you think I should wear one? I'd be happy to, but I don't want to look out dated and out of place, help please!

No they are horrible and super dated. Wear a hat or nothing at all.

Complet · 13/09/2025 09:40

No, step away from the fascinator!!!

Bitzee · 13/09/2025 09:42

No don’t do it!

Cynic17 · 13/09/2025 09:52

I would say no too, but if you feel absolutely determined, just wear for the ceremony and then remove!

redgingerbread · 13/09/2025 10:02

I think they’re passé now, sorry (I still have a soft spot for them when I look at the photos from my heyday as a wedding guest in about 2010-2015, though!). An interesting hair accessory (Alice band or clip) might look good.

CuriousKangaroo · 13/09/2025 10:03

No! Horrible things. And super dated.

Whattowearonmyhead · 13/09/2025 10:17

Well the vote so far is a big thumbs down, it's just that it's 3 or 4 years since I've been to a wedding, and because I'm MOB I thought it was still the done thing to wear something like that.
My dress is also quite plain (although very smart) as I don't like those mumsy, boxy style MOB outfits. This is another reason I thought it best to wear something on my head.
I won't be putting my hair up as it doesn't suit me, so any other alternatives to a fascinator?

Why not an actual hat, if they suit you?

As mother of the groom I felt I needed something on my head too but was a bit concerned that fascinators were dated.

I wore this in the end. A bit fascinatory but as it was a thick head band felt it was a bit more up to date.

There’s a lot of different styles and colours on that Etsy site.

That's nice, but I'm not sure a thick head band would feel right on my head, I'd feel like it was too heavy if that makes sense,

I thought of a hat too, but wasn't sure if that looked more 'showy' than a fascinator.

Fascinators are awful sorry, even when they were supposedly fashionable.

No, I think hats look better.

But also, I don’t think anyone would really bat an eyelid if you didn’t have anything.

AmyDuPlantier · 13/09/2025 10:46

The entire concept of fascinators is just weird. Here’s a wee bit of netting to stick randomly on top of your head, that’ll set your outfit off perfectly 😅

NotMeNoNo · 13/09/2025 10:46

If you have long hair you could get it professionally curled/put up on the day. My sister did this (was recently MOB) with a half-up style, it looked amazing, really didn't need anything else.

AmyDuPlantier · 13/09/2025 10:47

Actually think the whole thing of needing something on your head at a wedding is kinda weird and dated. Just do what you want! I think almost everyone who plonks a hat or fascinator on looks self-conscious and uncomfortable.

NotMeNoNo · 13/09/2025 10:50

I mean this kind of thing is more on trend at the moment for weddings, the style is decorative enough on its own.

I look absolutely ridiculous in hats I did try for Dds wedding but in the end I e
wore a deororative headband,.I bought it from Etsy.

weareallcats · 13/09/2025 11:06

Depending on how formal the wedding is, I would either wear a proper hat or nothing on my head at all.

Renamed · 13/09/2025 11:08

Not

Coffeeishot · 13/09/2025 11:11

My Dds MIL didn't wear anything in her hair, I have another Dc getting married next year i probably wont bother with anything.

Frikadelle · 13/09/2025 11:13

I don’t know about what’s in or out, but the some of the ladies wearing fascinators at the races recently looked amazing to me. You should chose whatever you feel most comfortable with.

pastabest · 13/09/2025 11:16

I was the only person at a wedding wearing a fascinator recently. They are definitely out (as was mine within about 5 mins of arriving!)

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 13/09/2025 11:16

I have one of those faces that just does not work with hats, but I also think fascinators are really outdated. I’ve worn a small sparkly headband recently, and at DSD’s wedding I had a couple of tiny crystal clips at the side.
