Should I wear a fascinator or not?

My DD is getting married in a hotel soon, and I've no idea whether to wear a fascinator or not.
I've looked on style threads and there's a mix of people saying they're dated, but then others say go for it! I've got in mind a navy dress to wear, and I was thinking of a contrasting colour head piece.
As MOB do you think I should wear one? I'd be happy to, but I don't want to look out dated and out of place, help please!

I think they're fun and frivolous - who cares if some people think they're dated? You're going to have a lovely day out with family and friends, not going to a Vogue lunch.

If I saw this at a wedding I think I’d just assume that she was really drunk.

That woman is a walking jar of marmite. At least 50% of the room think she’s an absolute dick.

You look beautiful and your fascinator really suits you, this is why I'm so confused as to why people say no!

If you find something you like buy it and wear it, who cares if they are "in" or not.

What a bloody exhibitionist!

If my dd ever gets married, I'd be the complete opposite and try to blend in the background. I'd be more than happy for dd and her future wife to be the centre of attention.

It does look like a choreographed entrance tbf so it was something the B&G approved, i didn't think she was showing off on purpose.. Saying that i didn't like sitting at the top table at my Dds wedding I am quite shy so if she wanted us to do a dance I would have just gone home 😀

You're right. There are other guests with tambourines so it must be some kind of hideous choreographed thing.

I'm with you at going home if I was forced to join in with any kind of group dance!

I'm clearly out of step but I think a fascinator / some kind of head wear is lovely, especially for the MOB/MOG as you are one of the most important people there.

Personally I prefer the more 'hat like' ones rather than the bunch of feathers and netting on a comb type ones. I wore one from Phase Eight last year for my brother's wedding - one of their 'disc' type ones. Hobbs also had some nice ones. I was re-wearing a dress so I thought I'd make the effort with the fascinator.

'Proper' hats feel too over-formal to me, a good fascinator is that middle ground where it's making an effort but not stuffy.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be just right for you!

I don't think you are 'out of step' at all.

I am of an age where we've started going to weddings again (our dc, our dns, our Godchildren) and also seeing photos of friends' dcs weddings.

Without exception the MoB and MoGs are all wearing something on their head - fascinator, 'hatinator' or full on hat.
As @Whattowearonmyhead says, it sort of 'elevates' the day over and above 'going out somewhere nice' to wedding status.

OP, I think you should look for something.
As it happens, I was only having a conversation with people recently about how we all have 2 or 3 hats in our possession we probably won't wear again, and that we should all share and borrow from one another. Smile

Thanks. I loved it. I have short hair so needed something!

RuthW · 13/09/2025 18:08

Yes or a hat or fancy headband but MOB needs to wear something on her head.

I quite like a fascinator, have you thought of something light and feathery in a complementary colour to your outfit - not netting.

I'm not so keen on feathers on me, they look nice on others though, I was thinking of a rose pink or something similar to contrast against navy

Weddings are always a good excuse to dress up 🙂
