Should I wear a fascinator or not?

My DD is getting married in a hotel soon, and I've no idea whether to wear a fascinator or not.
I've looked on style threads and there's a mix of people saying they're dated, but then others say go for it! I've got in mind a navy dress to wear, and I was thinking of a contrasting colour head piece.
As MOB do you think I should wear one? I'd be happy to, but I don't want to look out dated and out of place, help please!

@Whattowearonmyhead if you can find a hat hire place, take your outfit there and try some on. The last time I was a 'top-table' guest I did that - lovely proprietor let me try on lots of alternatives with my dress and offered really good advice and honest feedback.

(I hated/hate fascinators and was often the only one wearing hats through the 2010s, but looking back on photos - I'm glad I stuck with what I liked and felt comfortable with, so find something you love regardless of what the accessory is called).

If you have long hair you could get it professionally curled/put up on the day. My sister did this (was recently MOB) with a half-up style, it looked amazing, really didn't need anything else.

Edited

My hair's just a short bob, it's too short to put up and I prefer it down tbh. I'll have it curled or something though.

I like to see hats and fascinators at weddings, particularly MOB & MOG. Go for it - there are such a wide variety including bands I’m sure there would be something to suit.

I mean this kind of thing is more on trend at the moment for weddings, the style is decorative enough on its own.

Lovely style but not sure it'd look right on me

What about fresh or dried flowers? The wedding florist will do toning flowers on a clip/comb/hairband

That's an idea to think of too 🙂

I wore this to my son’s wedding last summer. I liked it because it complemented my outfit.

You look beautiful and your fascinator really suits you, this is why I'm so confused as to why people say no!

I'm clearly out of step but I think a fascinator / some kind of head wear is lovely, especially for the MOB/MOG as you are one of the most important people there.

Personally I prefer the more 'hat like' ones rather than the bunch of feathers and netting on a comb type ones. I wore one from Phase Eight last year for my brother's wedding - one of their 'disc' type ones. Hobbs also had some nice ones. I was re-wearing a dress so I thought I'd make the effort with the fascinator.

'Proper' hats feel too over-formal to me, a good fascinator is that middle ground where it's making an effort but not stuffy.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be just right for you!

That's how I feel, being MOB I don't want to 'blend in' completely with every other guest. I'll look at the hat type ones

omg I didn’t think there was a more annoying word than fascinator….hatinator!?!

I always thought it was tradition for the main wedding party to wear something on their head.

I’m MOG next year and will be wearing a hatinator - a disc on a headband rather than just random net and feathers. Perhaps look at those?

I'll definitely look at those 🙂

They're nice berets, but I'd probably look more like Frank Spencer in one than anything else 😊

I wore a large "hatinator" at my son's wedding, it really looked like a hat. I loved it and had many compliments. MOB wore a hat too but no one wore a fascinator. Some guests had a pretty clip or flower in their hair.

If I wear anything I'll probably go for a hatinator instead

What is your dress like? Is any part of the wedding outside?

The dress is a midi plain navy, it's a hotel wedding but photos would probably be outside too,

What an entrance! I'd love the confidence to strut my stuff like that, although I'm not shy and retiring so I would like to stand out a bit and get very glammed up.

Good idea, I think I'll do that 🙂

I quite like a fascinator, have you thought of something light and feathery in a complementary colour to your outfit - not netting.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/09/2025 13:16

Talking of ‘old fashioned’, the grey haired aunt of the main female character in Oklahoma!* promised to wear her fascinator if Curly, the handsome male lead, would escort her to the country dance!

*set many decades ago, probably pre 1900. I didn’t even know what a fascinator was when I first saw it!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 13/09/2025 13:18

It's an awful word but I go with "hatinators" for weddings. As easy to wear as a fascinator but infinitely more stylish (I think). I have all these.

Oh and if you can't be showy as Mother of the Bride, when can you?!

Should I wear a fascinator or not?

She does look gorgeous! I think because it tones with her hair, complexion and the dress - it doesn’t stand out so much.

AmyDuPlantier · 13/09/2025 13:40

Also just because they’re not on trend doesn’t mean nobody suits them

seratoninmoonbeams · 13/09/2025 13:45

No. Never worn one in my life. Never worn a hat to a wedding either. Makes me think of what my aunties or Mum would wear tbh. I make a lot of effort and buy new outfit, shoes and bag or whatever just nothing perched on my head.

Maddy70 · 13/09/2025 13:46

Nope. Big no from. A nice fancy hairclip you can get away with

seratoninmoonbeams · 13/09/2025 13:53

@AmyDuPlantier 😆🤣😆🤣 agreed

If I saw this at a wedding I think I’d just assume that she was really drunk.

IfHeWantedToHeWould · 13/09/2025 14:02

I would never wear one.
