Should I wear a fascinator or not?

My DD is getting married in a hotel soon, and I've no idea whether to wear a fascinator or not.
I've looked on style threads and there's a mix of people saying they're dated, but then others say go for it! I've got in mind a navy dress to wear, and I was thinking of a contrasting colour head piece.
As MOB do you think I should wear one? I'd be happy to, but I don't want to look out dated and out of place, help please!

What about fresh or dried flowers? The wedding florist will do toning flowers on a clip/comb/hairband

ClearlyUnfashionable · 13/09/2025 11:21

I'm clearly out of step but I think a fascinator / some kind of head wear is lovely, especially for the MOB/MOG as you are one of the most important people there.

Personally I prefer the more 'hat like' ones rather than the bunch of feathers and netting on a comb type ones. I wore one from Phase Eight last year for my brother's wedding - one of their 'disc' type ones. Hobbs also had some nice ones. I was re-wearing a dress so I thought I'd make the effort with the fascinator.

'Proper' hats feel too over-formal to me, a good fascinator is that middle ground where it's making an effort but not stuffy.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be just right for you!

I didn’t wear one for my son’s wedding. Tbh I think they just look a bit silly. Just upgrade all your other accessories.

SisterTeatime · 13/09/2025 11:28

I think you need something on your head. But not a fascinator with little feathers. @TulipTuesday ’s headpiece is lovely. A few years ago I wore a sort of braided velvet Alice band to the Goodwood Revival, (i got it in the Claire’s sale and it was £1!!! which honestly looked quite sophisticated and was very light and comfy to wear. Not suggesting you go to Claire’s but I was surprised how well it worked. If you put a pic of your outfit I’m sure posters could advise.

A naive blingy hair clip or similar, instead.

Beware the twatinator my dear,
When the moon is fat!

Some great suggestions, hair pinned into place looks lovely.

I got married in February and my God mother was the only person to wear a fascinator. She's a very traditional person and She looked lovely, no one had a problem with it. I say wear whatever you feel comfortable with.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/09/2025 11:32

Defo not a fascinator. If you don’t like hats, oryour hair up, I would go for awesome jewellery. Great earrings and necklace - statement pieces.

Overtheatlantic · 13/09/2025 11:34

A professional blow dry might be best.

loobylou10 · 13/09/2025 11:34

I’m MOG next year and will be wearing a hatinator - a disc on a headband rather than just random net and feathers. Perhaps look at those?

LorelaiGilmorepoodles123 · 13/09/2025 11:34

No they are always awful. Fake feather or flowers stuck on the side of someone's head... instead of buying one, get a really glam hair style :)

Buxusmortus · 13/09/2025 11:40

I wore a large "hatinator" at my son's wedding, it really looked like a hat. I loved it and had many compliments. MOB wore a hat too but no one wore a fascinator. Some guests had a pretty clip or flower in their hair.

NervyWegovy · 13/09/2025 11:44

As someone who has gone to 0 weddings ( that I remember) in my 30 odd years on earth who had to look up what a fascinator was. I like them Blush

HollyhockDays · 13/09/2025 11:46

What is your dress like? Is any part of the wedding outside?

MyElatedUmberFinch · 13/09/2025 11:46

I wear one to about every five weddings I go to, I think they are fun and I love accessories. I like little hats and fancy headbands and fancy hair clips too.

Meezer2 · 13/09/2025 11:51

I wore this to my son’s wedding last summer. I liked it because it complemented my outfit.

I was the only one wearing a hat at my DSis recent wedding. But I was her stand in mother of the bride. I just felt that my dress needed something to set it off. I only wore it during the service. It was a windy day so it kept my hair in place.
I love hats but hate fascinators. But if you choose to wear a hat make it a decent one. I bought a plain hat then added feathers and stuff to match my dress. My DSis loved it which is what mattered.

luckylavender · 13/09/2025 12:14

A hat or a headband. Fascinators are gone.

You look amazing, that colour is perfect for you 🩵

Callipygion · 13/09/2025 12:20

At my niece’s wedding, my sister (MOB) wore a fabulous hat and the MOG wore nothing on her head. I thought she (MOG) looked a bit plain and didn’t stand out enough as part of the wedding party, she sort of got ‘lost’ in the guests so to speak. So at my son’s wedding I wanted to have something on my head and ended up with a hatinator (a cross between a hat and fascinator - as hats don’t suit me really, and I felt silly in a fascinator haha)

HermioneWeasley · 13/09/2025 12:27

Hats and fascinators are both dated an unnecessary. Have your hair done professionally and wear fabulous striking jewellery

RaininSummer · 13/09/2025 12:32

I can't wear hats as they never fit right and annoy me as well as messing with my hair so have worn a small fascinator in my hair for all weddings and funerals this decade. I don't care if they are considered dated tbh as they suit me better and a bare head seemed wrong.

cariadlet · 13/09/2025 12:36

I'm never up to date on fashion and don't know what's in fashion and what isn't. I didn't know fascinators were passe before reading this thread.
Glad to hear it because I always thought they looked bloody stupid. And who on earth came up with the ridiculous name?
