Charlie Kirk and guns

A man has died and that's a terrible thing.

I'd never heard of him, but my sons, neither of whom take a lot of interest in politics generally, did know a lot about him. He was clearly a very skilled politician and debater, and some of the clips I've seen since show a man who could ask some very interesting questions calmly and make (imo) abhorrent positions seem reasonable.

One of the quotes I've seen is

"I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the second amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal. It is rational."

So, presumably he included his own life as one of those acceptable costs, or did he mostly mean poor black lives and other people's children?

People are fully capable of sincerely believing things that you or I find wrong and even offensive without neccesarily being bad people acting in bad faith.

And certainly not deserving of being assassinated and then mocked in death from the exact people who want us all to 'be kind'.

It's not really been mocking. It's more having the viewpoint that his views were abhorrent (true).
It's ok to still think that. Not everyone who dies was a decent human being and it's fine to say that. It's not mocking. Some people seem to have a strange belief that we need to not speak ill of the dead. The dead don't care. The dead are dead. His family will be well aware that not everyone liked his opinions so they will expect millions of posts by people who thought he was abhorrent. They're the consequences of his awful racist, homophobic, misogynistic etc views.

IGaveSoManySigns · 12/09/2025 17:52

Guns do not serve a purpose beyond injuring, destroying or killing the target. There is no other use for a gun.

I find it grossly hypocritical that he said that gun deaths are the cost of having guns, yet he also believes life is sacred and begins at conception. They are incompatible viewpoints.

This will not change a thing. Those who support gun rights to that extent are unable to marry up what caused this incident. They won’t connect the dots because they are simply unable to.

SeaAndStars · 12/09/2025 17:58

His belief that all life is sacred obviously didn't extend to animals. He said he 'loved' hunting.

Tinytimmy123 · 12/09/2025 17:59

It is impossible to ban guns in the US. With an unknown amount of illegal weapons the general public would be stupid to give up their guns.

Got to be ready for King Charles, zombie apocalypse, alien invasion both illegal and extra terrestrial and the Deep State taking the guns away

It’s called having principles. I allow my 17 year old daughter out at night on her own, despite the risk that something bad could happen to her, because you have to draw a line somewhere between freedom and safety.

I just wish people would spend five minutes reading and thinking about his arguments before they call him disgusting. I disagree with almost everything he believed but I fully accept that he had different values to mine and was living by those values. This is the reality of a pluralistic democracy but im starting to wonder whether mumsnetters actually don’t believe in democracy.

You accept his beliefs that women should be financially dependent on and eternally submissive to men, with no access to contraception, and no formal education for children? Interesting.

Some of us have been horrified about political violence and assassinations of people of opposing political views for a long time, not just when a friend of Donald Trump was killed.

After the hammer attack on Paul Pelosi (age 82) which fractured his skull, by an intruder who wanted to attack his wife Nancy Pelosi, the son of the President of the United States posted this Tweet.

Go back and read some of the comments I here... seriously. 🙄

Can be summed up as he didn't debate in 'the right way', and had opinions we disagree with, therefore im going to intuit his motives and label him a fascist.

This is how people get pushed to the right and radicalised because there is literally no acceptable way to disagree without being smeared and dismissed.

He went to Colleges and debated peacefully, and they killed him for it.

'They' didnt kill anyone. A young, white, right leaning, gun totting man did. Leapt to assumptions didnt you along with trump et Al. And the 'left' are the ones with the issues with debate and differing viewpoints???

NigelFaragesFakeRoarofLaughter · 12/09/2025 18:43

Donald Trump junior wasn't the only one enjoying gleeful jokes about the attack on the Pelosis or indeed the attack this June on the Hortmans and others (by a man with a hit list of nearly 70 people).

This behaviour isn't OK. It isn't OK when the victims are on the right, and it isn't OK when the victims are on the left, and it doesn't matter where the mockers claim to stand either.

(As it happens, Charlie Kirk was one of those spreading conspiracy theories about the assault on Pelosi and calling for the attacker to be bailed. But that's by the by.)

Aside from everything else wrong with Kirk’s remarks, it should also be noted that DePape is currently being held without bail.

Donald Trump senior's response this week when asked about the problem of radicalism in the US.

https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3lynbjh63l426
EARHARDT: We have radicals on the right as well. How do we fix this country?

TRUMP: I'll tell you something that's gonna get me in trouble but I couldn't care less. The radicals on the right oftentimes are radical because they don't want to see crime. The radicals on the left are the problem.

What do you mean? The poster said she disagrees with almost all his beliefs.

I had never heard of him before yesterday as I said. The more I read the more unpleasant and abusive he sounds. So he liked to debate with students. He was nice and let them air their views, then ignored them, and spouted his own racist, misogynist shite in return it seems. But hey - he was polite and nice and let them speak. So that's Ok then. I don't agree that he should have been murdered but i won't lose any sleep over him. I feel sorry for his family - in more ways than one. There was a family of democrats killed recently I also read today. Never heard a single mention of that. It's wrong to kill people, even if you don't agree with them, but this guy should not end up as some martyr.

Interesting that there has been little said about the Colorado shootings...doesn't fit the anti dem /left narrative.

He sounds 'anti-fascist' judging by the weird messages he'd engraved on the ammunition

Live by the sword, you die by the sword. Americans hang onto guns and there’s the death penalty in Utah. Lovely place the USA.

What are you on about? The illegal gun trade in the US is huge. There is absolutely no way to make it "gunless". Let's say the general law abiding public did abide by a gun ban or stricter controls do you really think criminals are going to also hand in weapons? Really?
The US is a political shit show of epic proportions in almost every regard. They CANNOT control guns. The proverbial shit is already out of the horse

Tinytimmy123 · 12/09/2025 19:57

Pictures emerging of the shooter in a trump tshirt and in a trump Halloween costume...also apparently aligned with Nick Fuentes , known for his far right beliefs and white supremacist leanings.

Montereyjaaack · 12/09/2025 20:27

This isn’t as much of a surprise as it should be - the likelihood that the shooter, or alleged shooter, being “right-wing”.. it’s far less likely an opposite view (left) decided to shoot CK.
isn’t that what happens repeatedly- right-wing extremists murdering people for purported political reasons and not the other way around?
The person ‘s reason for murdering CK is possibly very little do with supporting freedom of speech (or replace any supposed “right” CK stood for) or rights of any marginalised group and far more likely to be that the shooter/murderer doesn’t like that particular person - for whatever reason. What’s the gripe this individual had with CK - who knows .. yet. Maybe it’s he thought CK didn’t go far enough, maybe he didn’t like CK so-called debating. There is a myriad possible reasons that do not fall immediately into “he didn’t like what he stood for/had to say”.

I do get this argument, you are absolutely right. But you can also say the same thing of drugs, and yet the US hasn't stopped trying to control that.

My kids watch a US border patrol show, it's amazing the lengths they'll go to to prevent say 1kg of cocaine being imported over the border. They'll also try prevent the export of guns and gun parts to other countries in Central & South America. But somehow the gun trade within borders is a-ok and nothing can be done?

The trump t shirt one is AI generated, in the original photo the t shirt is blank.

There is a ton of misinformation out there.

Yeah, in the Halloween one he was 'riding' an effigy of Trump.
