A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

They probably thought - well trump has a relationship with Epstein too - hey, great ambassadorial fit!

upseedaisee · 11/09/2025 16:30

Honestly, you'd think at least one of them would think 'hang on, this bloke has been sacked twice already, is he really ambassador material?'

GabrielsOboe · 11/09/2025 16:32

Starmer is an utter plank isn’t he?

Flat footed with zero political instinct or nous.

His father should have remained at Black
and Decker.

I have a slightly different, and probably misguided, take on Starmer/Mandelson.

The Washington posting is the biggest one of all. It needs a really good and effective Ambassador. Particularly with erratic Trump in the White House.

Starmer increasingly recognises that present Labour is devoid of talent. So he’s reaching back to Blairites for help. He thinks they’re smart, experienced and battle hardened. Which is true enough in some ways, especially of Mandelson. But the track record obscured Starmer’s - already very limited - judgement, and he dismissed every warning sign.

And…car crash.

That’s my theory anyway. However you cut it, though, Starmer’s a bust and there must now be traction for a behind the scenes campaign to get rid of him.

You speak sense and it probably explains why he ignored warnings (or his team did). Irrespective of that, he ultimately is responsible.

Wonder if they would all rewind the clock back to July 24 and not try to win the election 🤣🤣

Supercilious BP would spark more Labour backbench rebellion than her predecessor if they ever manage to dislodge him.

It isn't a post normally filled by an elected politician though.

Normally a career diplomat.

twistyizzy · 11/09/2025 17:36

R4 asking why Starmer appointed Mandy. Secret services warned against it as well as Glassman?
Looks more and more like Starner ignoring advice.....who knew 🙄

GasPanic · 11/09/2025 17:49

The reason he was probably appointed was probably less to do with what friendships and associations he made in the past and more to do with his perceived ability to manage the UKs relationship with a US president that many people regard as "difficult" and challenging to deal with from a political perspective.

Starmer is having to tread a fine line with Trump as he is pretty unpopular in the UK and probably even more so amongst his own party. However a positive relationship with the US can bring significant political benefits which Starmer desparately needs.

TBH I don't think he failed in that job, by all accounts he had a good relationship with Trump and Trumps people and was managing the US-UK relationship well.

TheNuthatch · 11/09/2025 18:01

Surely we already had an ambassador to the US who was a brilliant diplomat doing a great job, and had an excellent relationship with the Trump team? Karen Pierce obviously wasn't sleezy enough for Starmer and McSweeney (who used to work for Mandy).

Alicia Kearns said this afternoon that the wording of Mandy being 'withdrawn' suggests that he hasn't actually been sacked, just withdrawn from the ambassador job. She suggested if he has only been withdrawn, not sacked, he would still be employed and paid as a civil servant.

Joining the thread if I may.

So depressed about the state of politics right now. And have not voted Labour for many an election now despite being a member way way back in the day. Their fiscal incompetence and resulting spite beggars belief.

Gosh, look at that...not just that gap between Labour and reform but the crazed Greens have caught up to the Lib Dems. 🫣

Parsley4321 · 11/09/2025 18:18

In a previous role, I was put through vetting by Kroll. They went through everything, and I mean, everything. I had to make full disclosures too.

This government is either disingenuous or incompetent, or both.

How many more fuck ups can Starmer bear?

I have to provide disclosure about myself because my sister in law is in the RAF! Not that they want to see everything, but I have to provide enough info to be checked out!

NoWordForFluffy · 11/09/2025 18:30

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 11/09/2025 14:23

You summarise it well.

I have no idea what the tax or other legal implications would be if a husband gives his wife money to buy a property in her name and so (as I understand the allegation) avoid SDLT on that purchase, presumably because she didn’t have an interest in another property and so isn’t a second home owner.

On its face it doesn’t seem a problem: he’s effectively bought his wife a house. But I’m sure it must be more complex than that from a tax liability point of view.

I can’t understand why he said that the money was his wife’s (which it may well have been, of course) if that didn’t matter.

I may be wrong, but if they're married, I think they're thought of as a single entity for SDLT purposes. I'm pretty sure that as I'd owned a house before meeting my husband, that he wouldn't be considered a FTB, even if he bought without me.

I doubt it's the same for non-married couples. (Is Farage married? She's referred to as his 'partner' in all reports I've seen.)

Disclaimer: this may all be misremembered bollocks. 🤣🤣
