How many big house spiders have you seen in your house this season?

I think this year has been our worst. It started early august and still going now. I’ve just had to kill one this morning and now I feel guilty. Dp usually deals with them but he’s not here. I’m fed up feeling a prisoner in my own home.

I've removed three in the last two weeks. I use the empty jar and piece of cardboard method. OH would kill them if I left it to him. I put them outside in the garden. That's probably a bit mean if you're a house spider.

Misspacorabanne · 08/09/2025 06:04

usually see a lot, but surprisingly none yet! We saw one back in June, but none since! I’ve probably jinxed myself now! Only difference this year is that we now have a cat, so not sure if she’s catching them or we just haven’t seen any yet!

Gatekeeper · 08/09/2025 06:17

Not one since the cellar spiders took up residence. The latter might look like puny, nowty things but they can take down a huge house spider in the blink of an eye

Why did you "have to" kill it?

Financial · 08/09/2025 06:21

Loads, but they love our house.

I don’t mind them but tend to move them on.
Would never consider killing one!

Plinketyplonks · 08/09/2025 06:22

We’ve had four so far. Oddly all on the stairs as we’re heading up to bed at night.

NoMoreHotHols · 08/09/2025 06:26

Two: one downstairs but the dog enthusiastically ate that, one upstairs I managed to catch in a glass and put back outside. I use a glass and paper or a large tissue to gently wrap into (if theu’re not too fast) to put them outside.
I’ve been wondering about the lack of wasps in my area this year. Not that I miss those, wasps freak me out more.

whoboo · 08/09/2025 06:28

None yet Looks round)

andanotherproblem · 08/09/2025 06:28

So many, especially in the bathroom and lounge. Must be 3 per day at least, the bloody massive ones too. Our house backs onto a forest so I’m assuming that’s why we have so many

Gettingbysomehow · 08/09/2025 06:29

None. I have cats.

Lovelynames123 · 08/09/2025 06:30

4 or 5, but I just pick them up and throw them outside, but definitely more than usual

Shellyash · 08/09/2025 06:31

About 10 or 11, tend to be in the evening or early morning.
They get vacuumed up or squished.

PurpleChrayn · 08/09/2025 06:33

None! Our big ginger tom cat might not be the brightest but he’s an expert arachnid catcher.

Zuve · 08/09/2025 06:33

There is one massive spider outside desperate to get in. But it won't. I will stop it
Morning spiders, morning Ladies

HurdyGurdy19 · 08/09/2025 06:35

We were just saying yesterday that we're surprised not to have seen any so far this year.

So we're yet to hear (adult) son shrieking like a banshee for one of us to go and remove them 😂

whoboo · 08/09/2025 06:36

Oh god, is it a monster spider year. Thankfully have the cat. (Sorry Spideys, nowt personal)

Yes we’ve had one big house spider (and it may have been the biggest I’ve ever seen!), but no others since we have so many cellar spiders!

I think they don’t really go for the massive adult house spiders, but they eat the baby ones so they don’t grow up into beasts

Tiredofwhataboutery · 08/09/2025 06:43

Lots of them and massive ones too this year. Most house spiders die if put outside, I always wonder at people who think it’s awful to kill them indoors whilst preferring to kill then slowly by chucking them out. It’s like humane mousetraps, your average mouse set free a mile down the road will die of starvation / predator pretty quickly. It’s just a panacea for your conscience surely? Anyway I do keep a number of pet spiders and cobwebby windows as it keeps the flies down.

If they are actually house spiders it won’t be anything to do with the woods. You might get a few more accidental wanderers from the woods, but house spiders don’t live outside, they live in the house (or shed).

That’s why putting house spiders outside isn’t really an act of kindness. They’ll either come straight back in, or die. They won’t think “oh good, I’ve been released back to my natural habitat!”

RunningJo · 08/09/2025 06:50

We’ve had 5 so far, one was bloody massive!

I am terrified of them, genuine, push someone out of the way, fear.
Yes, it’s ridiculous, yes, know they won’t hurt me, but I can’t help it. I can’t even get close enough to kill one even if I wanted to.
They do seem particularly big this year, but perhaps I say this every year.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 08/09/2025 06:53

One- I let cellar spiders live here. They've got names. One gets stuck in the bath very frequently and I make him a little ladder out of tissue; he's started walking over to me when he sees me do it now.

Autumn1990 · 08/09/2025 06:55

5 massive ones. I do have some cellar spiders as well. They seem to have dealt with the smaller spiders as I haven’t seen any of those

Danikm151 · 08/09/2025 06:55

At least 10- there’s currently 1 on my son’s ceiling but I can’t reach up that high

WonderingWanda · 08/09/2025 06:57

Only two big fat ones who I rescued for their own good because we are overrun by cellar spiders, and if they don't catch them the cat will.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 08/09/2025 07:00

I had an enormous false widow spider actually dangling from the hem of my skirt a few weeks ago. Was in the house and thought there was a ball of cotton swinging from the skirt, realised it was a spider!
