DS just bum shuffled and I could cry

I desperately don’t want him to be a bum shuffler but I knew it was likely to be on the cards because he has always hated tummy time and was pretty late to roll.

Bum shuffling is linked to all sorts of developmental delay, dyspraxia, dyslexia etc. I’ve just read a study that stated half of bum shufflers went on to be diagnosed with ASD.

I just feel very sad that I can see a tricky future mapped out for him. I will forever ask myself if we could have done more to encourage tummy time but in the early days he just screamed and screamed and in the later days he was just not fussed about it and would roll onto his back.

Crawling is so important for developing visual acuity, handwriting, visual spatial skills etc. I am just absolutely heartbroken for him.

DH bless him doesn’t have a clue about the implications and is sitting there cheering him and proudly videoing it 😔 I’ve had to come out of the room I just feel sick and so gutted.

My DD was a bum shuffler, and was a late walker. She's now 2.5, and fully caught up physically developmentally as well as speech/ emotional and social development. My brother and a few cousins were the same with no asd diagnosis

Would you like to share the links that you’ve read and others can then give you a view? It’s unlikely to be as decisive as you think, but onde you’re panicked it’s harder to unpack it.

Walkaround · 07/09/2025 21:50

Feeling you could cry, or feeling sick and gutted because you saw your son bum shuffle and imagining a difficult future for him as a result is linked to anxiety disorders and depression. I’ve read a study which indicated that99% of people who have this reaction to their baby have one of these mental health conditions.

Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists:-

Is it normal for children to bottom shuffle?
YES – Children can reach their developmental milestones early and others much later. Some may miss out on developmental milestones all together – such as crawling. Some babies will learn to bottom
shuffle instead – this is a normal variant

The rate at which a child develops is affected by many factors such as:
• Genetics/family history -someone else in the family may have been a bottom shuffler or late to walk
• Temperament.
• Experience and opportunity – some babies may have spent time in hospital, for example following a premature birth or prolonged illness or some babies may not have had the opportunity to play on the floor.

Bo1978 · 07/09/2025 21:51

Is this your first child OP? I think people think you sound awful because your post sounds so extreme and definite when he’s probably completely normal. Just don’t google!

Wayk · 07/09/2025 21:51

Please please do not believe this bs. My friend’s daughter bum shuffled and was nearly 2 before she walked. She is now a 22 year old dentist. I know several babies that bum shuffled and are perfect.

Matronic6 · 07/09/2025 21:51

Zzxxyyzz · 07/09/2025 20:37

Well, no. Half of all crawlers are not diagnosed with ASD, but half (it was 42% actually, I just checked) of bum crawlers were.

But 58% weren't. Even with the statistics he is more likely not to have ASD.

cestlavielife · 07/09/2025 21:53

So what?
Maybe he will have asd
Maybe he won't

Stop crying.
Wait and see.
Tell yourself you will do whatever to love and support him thru his life to be happy whatever he turns out to be

no development delays or difficulties at all.
please don’t stress xx

Holy fuck

World peace has ended, we are living in the most fragile of times, and your child has bum shuffled

Did you not get the beep on your phone at 3pm today?

Do you not think about why we are getting beeps on our phone these past 2 years?

Im in my 60's. the last I ever heard of warning testing sirens - were the real bloody things during the Cold War

And you are worrying about tummy time and bum shuffling !!!

No wonder this country is completely fucked

LBFseBrom · 07/09/2025 21:53

Your baby is only just over a year old. See how he goes, wait another six months and I bet you anything he will be fine. If not then you can address it but now is not the time, it's too early to worry. Encourage him to develop strength in his arms and back in other ways.

Ficklebricks · 07/09/2025 21:53

This is incredibly offensive to neurodiverse people, why are you acting like it's the end of the world to be autistic/ADHD /dyspraxic etc? Sure these people face genuine challenges but you're acting like it's some sort of life limiting terminal illness.

Not that there is any real link between bum shuffling and autism in the first place.

I'm reporting your post, this is just unacceptably ableist. Educate yourself and seek therapy.

Iamwhoiamandnobodyelse · 07/09/2025 21:54

Not sure it's worth adding this to the thread as I see you've had a lot of similar responses already. It's natural to be worried when children are developing and doing different things to other children, but this will be the same throughout their life. The "Baby race" Bluey episode is a good recommendation from others!

I was worried when my daughter was bum shuffling - she was a pro at sort of dragging herself along in some weird move. No other babies we knew did it. She didn't walk until 17 months. Health visitor, GP etc weren't concerned..I was, of course, and had SIL banging on about needing to crawl to connect the sides of the brain. However, she did crawl later after learning to walk (which is all that's required apparently).
She was a late walker but an early talker, early reader, streaks ahead of her peers at maths and English etc now, perfect handwriting by age 4 etc. Others were the opposite. She may well turn out to be autistic, many similar children are (huge overlap between gifted and autistic) but it's not a doomed life sentence.

I do agree with others that you are catastrophising somewhat (and I have a tendency to do that same so I do understand), and frankly if they do turn out to be dyspraxic, dyslexic, autistic etc, it's not something to cry about! Kindly, some perspective is needed!

DustyMaiden · 07/09/2025 20:50

It’s a marker , it has been noted as being common in people with ASD. Your child either is or isn’t autistic. If you managed to get them to crawl it would not change anything.

My child didn’t bum shuffle. He is a maths and computer genius and has ASD.

Its not more common in ND children than NT, the statistics bear that out.

Dont spread misinformation or more mums will be panicking like this.

Neodymium · 07/09/2025 21:55

He’s only just moving now and he’s 1? Have you spoke to your child health nurse? That would concern me more than the bum shuffling. I have 2 ND children one crawled at 9 months, after only being able to sit up and roll at like 7 months. The other first rolled at 6 weeks. Yes I’m not kidding I videoed it. She was a tummy sleeper and would roll onto her tummy and sleep. She crawled at about 6 months.

Lemonyyy · 07/09/2025 21:56

If your child has ASD, making them do more tummy time and trying to get them to crawl wouldn’t have changed that 🙄 it’s not a causation thing!

mamagogo1 · 07/09/2025 21:56

My dd was an excellent crawler and has both dyspraxia and asd. Bum shuffling means nothing

Mischance · 07/09/2025 21:57

Oh good grief! - just enjoy this new milestone for him! Smile and cuddle!

Children get on the move in their own different ways at the beginning.

Your gloom and doom scenario is perfectly and completely and utterly ridiculous!

Miffylou · 07/09/2025 21:57

DD was a bum-shuffler and didn’t start walking until she was 22 months. However, she knew and could name all the colours at 18 months and spoke in sentences well before she was 2.

She is now a good dancer, plays 2 musical instruments at a high level, has a maths degree from Cambridge and has a good job and social life.

i wouldn't worry.

JudgeJ · 07/09/2025 21:57

You need to change your reading matter!
My late mother used to be very worried that my daughter bum-shuffled, not that she'd read some dodgy research, but we tried to explain to her that I was racing dinghies up to about 6 months pregnant and it seemed that the baby was trying to lay the mark, ie she would shuffle, check over her shoulder to see where she wanted to be, tack (shuffle around) and carry on! I do think that parents would have far less anxiety etc about raising children if they didn't read so much written by people wanting to make money.

NaiceBalonz · 07/09/2025 21:58

Get a fucking grip and stop being so precious. Crying because your child bun shuffled? You need serious help 🙄

When was world peace? Did I miss it?
in the US we had the EBS on our radios and TVs from before I was born. They then swapped over to cell systems later on.

Also alive during the Cold War, saw the Berlin Wall come down.
