Washing school blazer?

SophiaRose91 · 07/09/2025 13:32

My son has just started secondary school and has a blazer as part of his uniform. I just wondered if its ok to pop in washing machine once a week or if im better to get dry cleaned? (Although that will start to get pricey!)
I’m worried about the washing machine making the blazer lose its shape?
thanks for any advice x

I do. Once a week or so. Should be fine.

TheNightingalesStarling · 07/09/2025 13:40

Check the washing label, but many are machine washable these days.

Laiste · 07/09/2025 13:45

Glad you asked i was thinking the same!

Maybe a gentle short wash once a week.

Washing machine and then hang up to dry works fine for my sons blazer

Comedycook · 07/09/2025 13:47

Ive always put my DC's blazers in the washing machine...on a short 30 degree wash

Fitzcarraldo353 · 07/09/2025 13:47

My DS's one is fine in the washing machine. I usually stick it in a net bag just in case but it's been fine.

TheChippendenSpook · 07/09/2025 13:47

It will be fine. Just don't do what I did and iron one that was made from recycled plastic!

Cantseetreesforthewood · 07/09/2025 14:03

We do ours every half term......
In the machine, in a net bag - it is machine washable tho.

Hatty65 · 07/09/2025 14:04

Yes they are fine to wash. Wash on a delicate item wash if you are unsure, then hang up to dry.

LizzieBet14 · 07/09/2025 14:09

The best piece of advice I was given about blazers was to put them on a hanger to dry.

frozendaisy · 07/09/2025 14:12

I wash them on the handwashing cycle (and throw in any other delicates) and hang on a coat hanger to dry, usually do this Friday evening
Blazers are very much polyester not tweed mind

Justletmemoveon · 07/09/2025 14:13

Check the label, but ours goes in the washing machine and tumble dryer.

Edited to add it goes in both as it is and comes out completely fine.

I put my sons in once a fortnight or so. Just on a 45 min cycle. Dries really quick.

ComeTheMoment · 07/09/2025 14:20

I machine wash DC's blazer but only at the end ofhalf terms or in between if it gets dirty marks e.g. lunch on it. It will show signs of wear quite quickly if you wash it every week is my feeling

whoboo · 07/09/2025 14:21

Aye. It's probably polyester

Coconutter24 · 07/09/2025 14:36

I was both my girls blazers weekly, sometimes fortnightly. On a 30 wash and they are absolutely fine. Never miss shaped or faded

popandchoc · 07/09/2025 14:46

I do my daughters once a week in washing machine

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 07/09/2025 14:48

As long as it’s a normal polyester one you can bung it in a washing machine.
We have wool ones (both our schools give the choice I’m just a glutton for punishment) and they need dry cleaning really

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 07/09/2025 14:50

I washed my child’s this week in a 40 wash but with only a 600 spin- washed inside out and with no fabric softener- reshaped while damp and hung up came out perfect.

Hephebe · 07/09/2025 14:57

Ours are dry clean only but I still put them in the washer about once a month. Don't get me wrong, they do start to look a bit less crisp and business-like after a few washes but at least they're clean!

OldYorkMum · 07/09/2025 15:50

My top tip - empty the entire contents of the pockets into a plastic bag so they don’t lose any vital items (including scraps of paper you might mistake for rubbish but is actually their homework instructions or something)

Perpetualstateofchaos · 07/09/2025 16:28

My dcs astute no fabric softener as they have a water resistant coating on. Out them in on a quick wash or with towels and hanger to dry. Done this for past 8 years and never had an issue

ShodAndShadySenators · 07/09/2025 16:47

I machine washed and tumble dried DS's blazer - weekly in the summer term, once a fortnight in winter or if it gets cold. Teenage boys' blazers get a bit stinky in the underarm area otherwise. Not so much in Y7 but definitely when puberty kicks in...

His first one lasted until Year 10, then I had to buy a new one for Y11 as it was shiny and wearing through on the elbows. Surprisingly robust!

Sportsdaywinner · 13/09/2025 22:01

Wash my sons once a week on a Friday on a 30°C wash. Hang up to dry. Always fine!
