I’ve been singing these lyrics wrong for 21 years!

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane.

Apparently it’s “oh, simple thing, where have you gone?” and not “oh sympathy, where have you gone?”

Entirely boring thread (and probably far more worthy of Dull Women’s Club than MN), but I cannot be the only one!

It sounds like Elton is singing “counting ten tin soldiers anyroad” in Nikita but they’re actually ‘in a row’. Thought he was coming over a bit northern for Elton

My mum always sang “Septicemia, it’s just one of those things you put down to experience”

It’s actually “Sad, sweet dreamer, it’s just one of those things you put down to experience “.

I prefer my mum’s version.

😆😆😆

I thought the chorus of that song started: "I'm going to flip top my neighbour" whereas it is actually "I'm going to lift up my labour [of love]"

I quite like my version though I'm still not sure how I would flip-top my neighbour.

Now, that bit I thought was withdraw my labour of love. Which made sense, you know, because of her super bad moods.

Honestly, it’s like the Smash Hits lyrics page never existed 🙄

Probably showing my age but there used to be a section on radio 1 in the 80’s called twisted lyrics. The trouble is I can’t sing along Robert Flack, tonight I celebrate my love for you since. I think ‘tonight I sellotape my glove to you’ sounds so much better 😁

I remember that as Chris Tarrant reading ‘readers letters’ on Capital Radio breakfast show. (People would write in with spoof letters of why they wanted a song request)

Me and mum heard it whilst out driving and were in hysterics (I was probably on the way to be dropped off at primary school)

It’s a weirdly a core memory for me and I still sing the sellotape version.

We were not radio 1 people as a family. Always capital on all the radios.

As a teenager I thought ‘Every breath you take’ was a campaign song written by the actual police, warning that they are always watching us..

Aaaahhh I just looked up the lyrics and you are right, it is "withdraw my labour". Even my correction was misheard 😂😂😂

My sister also misheard the Freed from Desire one as strombolese, sort of a mixture of trombolese and Stromboli.

I also used to think Lost in Music was "Lost in Munich".

Another one, when my son was little he was adamant that the chorus of The Macarena was "Hey, my gorilla". If we hear it now that's what we sing along.

I used to think ABBA were singing “when I saw you last night in Tescos” when they sang Super Trouper lol

For years I always thought it was When I saw you last night in Costco! Even now when I deliberately tune in it still doesn't sound like Glasgow to me.

BauhausOfEliott · 05/09/2025 10:16

I used to work with a bloke who thought 'Eye Of The Tiger' was 'Ivor The Tiger'.

springissprung2025 · 05/09/2025 10:29

So it’s not ‘I’m not talking ‘bout the linen’ it’s actually ‘I’m not taking ‘bout moving in’. Whoever would have known! Song is I’d really love to see you tonight. Ex dh and I in early romantic days used to sing it to each other

I also thought it was sympathy until now.

mine was ‘Go, go Jason Waterfall’ and I’ve stuck with my version; he needs the encouragement.

😂 ok this is going to the new way I hear it

You're right it is "withdraw", I am now VERY familiar with the lyrics. Me and my stick of bamboo...

ImogenBrocklehurst · 05/09/2025 14:04

”stick of bamboo” 😆😆

FreddysFingers · 05/09/2025 18:22

Oh I'm watching this one 😆. My misheard lyrics were that I thought the song 'Streetlife' by the crusaders was 'Streetlight' and I kept wondering what the significance of a lamp post was and why they'd made a song about it 🤣🤣

Ha I genuinely thought it was sympathy until reading this post.
I worked on the shop floor in John Lewis Christmas 2013 and had to listen to the Lily Allen version on a loop for full shifts as well.

I feel your pain. So many good Christmas songs ruined by having to work in retail!

Ahh

I remember the disappointment of 5yr old me when Spandau Ballet came on TV and didn't do ballet dancing. FFS they weren't even wearing tutus!!!!!!

DowntonCrabby · 05/09/2025 19:17

I was genuinely about 36 (and could capably count to 9) before I realised it was ”times” and not…

“1, 2, 3, 4, come on baby say you love me, 5, 6, 7, NINE!!”

I just didn’t question why 8 had been missed.

Curlygirl06 · 05/09/2025 19:30

Bluebellsparklypant · 04/09/2025 22:23

my misheard lyric is
“Can’t stand gravy”
for “constant craving” by k.d. lang
I still can’t see it normally now

Yes! Thank you! I've been saying that for years.

'And the hot dogs will go on'

Nothing will convince me it's any different!

I just googled the lyrics to Danger Zone! What...? 😂 I've always sung I Went To The Danger Zone too 🤯

And Tim riding his bike along a …. highway … at that point in the film didn’t give you a clue 🤣

Zodiacrobat · 05/09/2025 20:21

Tom obviously, auto correct fail!

FortuneFaded · 06/09/2025 01:54

Until today, I thought it was “I went to the danger zone”, followed by “right into the danger zone”, as Tom was emphasising that he really got up in that danger zone’s face coz he is so hard and skilled with danger. I know he had his bike, but as they were flying jets, I clearly didn’t hear “highway” or “ride” because I was thinking the danger was all about jets, not riding bikes. I’ll get me coat!

Same!
