I’ve been singing these lyrics wrong for 21 years!

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane.

Apparently it’s “oh, simple thing, where have you gone?” and not “oh sympathy, where have you gone?”

Entirely boring thread (and probably far more worthy of Dull Women’s Club than MN), but I cannot be the only one!

Loving these, especially “called me last night from Tesco” and “wife of a postman, wife of a postman”

For years we have sung “my lover’s got no money, he’s got his dungarees”

At least dungarees exist unlike trombolese?!!

My friend thought it was tambourines which also exist
On the back of this thread I listened to it again on you tube and it really does sound like Trombelese.

Is it not ‘I went to the Danger zone??!!’

I thought it was ‘highway to the danger zone’ 😂

OldBeyondMyYears · 05/09/2025 00:48

No way!! I had to listen again…and quite literally cannot hear ‘simple’ even now I’ve googled and ‘know’ it isn’t sympathy! Played it twice and genuinely can’t hear ‘simple’! Mind. Blown. 🤯

I thought it was ‘highway to the danger zone’ 😂

I remember the film being shown on a Saturday night back in the 80,s in school that Monday we were all doing the hand slap thing
And saying I feel the need the need for speed 🤣

Jackdog39 · 05/09/2025 00:58

My mum always sang “Septicemia, it’s just one of those things you put down to experience”

It’s actually “Sad, sweet dreamer, it’s just one of those things you put down to experience “.

I prefer my mum’s version.

Two from Taylor Swift

Gotta Love Those Starbucks Lovers

”Gotta Long List Of Ex Lovers”

I want you, that’s my toe

”I want you, bless my soul”

Me too! And I thought the blank space she was writing their name on was the Starbucks coffee cup 🤣

FortuneFaded · 05/09/2025 02:11

My username is in tribute to the song by Red Hot Chili Peppers. For years and years, I sang:

”Come on God, your ass ain’t bullet proof”

Thinking he was challenging God in some way. I like my version better.

whoboo · 05/09/2025 03:02

Radiohead were the worst for it, specially when I listened on tape.

PatheticDistraction · 05/09/2025 03:21

In Adele's song 'Hometown' I always thought it was:

'Me and Maurice and friends'

but it's

'Memories are fresh'

Probably makes more sense

One of my favourites is from Frank Turner, I’m on a Frank Turner fan page, it was posted on there.
He sings that Amy is so wrapped up in her invisible drama, turns out some people heard that she was wrapped up in her invisible llama.
Frank got to hear about this so for a while when he sang the song they would project a llama onto the stage behind him.

i loved the Peter Kay sketch on misheard lyrics.

labooboo · 04/09/2025 16:28

My other misheard lyric is ‘put your hands up for Detroit, I love this city’
It’s actually ‘our lovely city’

I'm shooketh! Googled because I didn't believe you!

Sandyshandy · 05/09/2025 06:24

I also thought it was sympathy until now.

mine was ‘Go, go Jason Waterfall’ and I’ve stuck with my version; he needs the encouragement.

SabreIsMyFave · 04/09/2025 16:19

Oh I did know that one! But I have got a few song lyrics wrong before!

Don't bring me down groose (ELO) I thought was 'Don't bring me down Bruce!'

You’ve just blown my brain!! I thought it was Bruce too!

Empress13 · 05/09/2025 06:27

I used to think ABBA were singing “when I saw you last night in Tescos” when they sang Super Trouper lol

Until you hear Lily Allen’s cover.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 04/09/2025 23:38

I'm every woman, it's all in me
I can read your thoughts right now, every one from A to Z

DH misheard it as "I can beat your balls right now"

Now I can only hear that version!

‘Every one from A to Z’ oh… I thought it was ‘every rhythm A to Z’

greengreyblue · 05/09/2025 06:50

My DD now 21 had an argument with a boy at school aged 10 because he would not accept that Coldplay were singing ‘Para para paradise’ because he was convinced it was ‘para para paralyse’ She came out of class and asked me to go and tell him cos he wouldn’t listen. I wonder when the penny dropped.

AnneButNotHathaway · 05/09/2025 07:39

YES! I used to think it was "a simple fate" or "a simple faith" and I've only learnt the actual lyrics a couple of years ago when I used the song for a smartshow 3d video for friend's birthday (she loves their music) and looked up the lyrics.

OneWarmGreySloth · 05/09/2025 07:49

maggiesleapp · 04/09/2025 22:42

Omg!!! I thought it was ‘I want cookies’! No way its Alberquerque!

Exactly!!! And “I want cookies” would fit in with the weird hot dog jumping frog lyrics. But even now that I know it’s alberquerque I still say I want cookies. I just can’t unhear it.

In our house, this is 'Parrots, parrots, parrots eyes...'

Theres a song from the late 80s that I kept hearing on the radio but never caught the name of it or the name of the band. Obviously it was pre Shazam.

It turns out it was a Canadian band called the Pursuit of Happiness. I had ear worm for years singing in my head ' I'm on the dole now', turns out it is called 'I'm an adult now'
Still a good song!

It is!

Lemonyfuckit · 05/09/2025 00:10

I always thought it was “why do you, fill me up, fill me buttercup, baby…” instead of “build me up”

Had another boyfriend who also thought this! It bothered me enough that I've posted about it before. 😂

CeciliaDuckiePond · 05/09/2025 08:21

I have a backwards one - Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar On Me'. I used to be fine with the lyric "Livin' like a lover with a radar phone" when the song came out in the 1980s, but now I can only hear it as "Livin' like a lover with a red iPhone".
