I’ve been singing these lyrics wrong for 21 years!

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane.

Apparently it’s “oh, simple thing, where have you gone?” and not “oh sympathy, where have you gone?”

Entirely boring thread (and probably far more worthy of Dull Women’s Club than MN), but I cannot be the only one!

I thought the line in Murder on the Dance Floor was "better not kill the groom" until about three months ago. Thought it was about a dance floor at a wedding, possibly with an older groom who might have a heart attack if he danced too much.

CalzoneOnLegs · 04/09/2025 17:35

‘She’s alone in the new pollution’ I thought was ‘She’s alone in the Revolution’

For years (until I actually read the lyrics) I thought Hue and Cry sang "I've had enough of you and your stick of bamboo" in 80's banger "Labour of Love". It made no sense but okay.

Turns out it's "I've had enough of you and your super-bad crew" which isn't a much better lyric but does have the merit of making sense Grin

I’ve been singing “super bad moods” for forty years.

You're a genius, that's a MUCH better lyric!

My other misheard lyric is ‘put your hands up for Detroit, I love this city’
It’s actually ‘our lovely city’

I thought it was I love this city until just now 😂

The lyrics on Mariah Carey's 'Touch my Body' always sound wrong to me now due to the 'Tuts my Barreh' version. If you know, you know.

Ps, don't Google it if easily offended.

Velmy · 04/09/2025 17:47

There used to be a website called 'KissedThisGuy' dot com (based on the often misheard "Excuse me while I kiss this guy/Excuse me while I kiss the sky" Jimmy Hendrix lyrics) that compiled misheard song lyrics.

'Freed From Desire' by Gala is a common misheard lyric. She says 'he's got his
strong beliefs.' Some people think it's 'he's got his tromobelese.'

Again, I knew that was 'strong beliefs,' but I do get some lyrics wrong. Another one for me is Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon. I thought it was 'this sex is on fire' but it's 'your sex is on fire.' I think my version makes more sense. 😆

I can't hear that Kings of Leon song without having Michael McIntyre's voice in my head, "Darling, don't panic". 😂

Oh I did know that one! But I have got a few song lyrics wrong before!

Don't bring me down groose (ELO) I thought was 'Don't bring me down Bruce!'

Me too!!! I wondered who Bruce was as there's no other mention of him in the song!😀

LlynTegid · 04/09/2025 17:55

I used to think as a child that The Lord's my Shepherd's opening verse said 'in Partridge Green he leadeth me' (it's a Sussex village).

AllJoyAndNoFun · 04/09/2025 18:07

I thought Sade sang “just because you’re rich ( ooh-ooh) doesn’t make it right”

it’s actually “just because it feels good, doesn’t make it right”

I kind of prefer my version!

I thought The Lord of the Dance said ‘ Dance then wherever you may be, I am the lord of the dance settee…’ 😳

Apparently in Love is All Around by Wet Wet Wet he sings "I gotta keep it moving" which I can’t hear at all and swear he sings "gotta feed the Moomin"!

It will always be trombolese… I thought he was poor and liked busking with his slightly odd brass instrument.

TY78910 · 04/09/2025 19:49

Oh I knew it was sympathy. But ‘what have you done’ 🤣

VivaForever81 · 04/09/2025 19:51

I knew this one but I found out recently I’ve been singing the Boy George classic wrong for all these years, I thought it was…
Come on, come on, come on chameleonnnnn.

emwithme · 04/09/2025 17:04

I've always sung this as "my love has got no money (etc), his Dad is from Belize". Can't hear it any other way

Hahahaha. This is a much better lyric and I will be singing it from now on.

RollingDeep · 04/09/2025 19:58

I thought The MC Hammer song lyric ‘ you can’t touch this’ was ‘St Justice’ for YEARS.

The clue was probably in the song title…

Welltower · 04/09/2025 20:08

The Kooks - Naive

thought the lyric was ‘ I know she knows I am not from the Ruskin’ perhaps Anglia Ruskin university?

it’s actually ‘not fond of asking’

When she sings ' let me wrap my thighs around you' I always think she says 'let me rub my thighs' and can only picture Vic n Bob rubbing their thighs in a creepy fashion!

Also I swear that Shania Twain does actually sing "I can't believe you kiss your cock at night" and have done since I first heard that song in the late 90s. It's a hill I am prepared to die on!

For years I thought it was carving knife 🔪

mysparkleismissing · 04/09/2025 21:32

There was a segment/game on this very subject on radio x this morning

I always thought strong beliefs was trombolease in some garage tune from my youth!

And in a Pink song it sounds like she's talking abiut a medical condition cardio something

I can't remember the names of the some off the top of my head right now

TheFancyLion · 04/09/2025 21:59

My head nearly fell off when I found out that the song "Do you really like it" by Pied Pipers does not go "Ayia Napa, Ayia Napa, Ayia Napa"....but.... "How dya like my, how dya like my, how dya like my ...style"

Im still not convinced tbh.
