DP lost her job

Just need to dump this somewhere as I feel like friends/family are sick of hearing from me.

DP has lost her job. I won’t go into the details but it was due to exceptionally poor management. She is not to blame.

We have a 2 year old, childcare fees and a mortgage. My income leaves us £1000 a month short assuming no non-essential spending, no new shoes for DD etc.

We have modest savings but by my account every day she is unemployed these go down by £30.

Yes she’s applying for jobs but there are no guarantees. What the fuck are we going to do if she can’t get one. What do people do??? Sell my house and move into one room at my mums on the other side of the country? Sell it and try to find a flat? Most cost more to rent than my mortgage.

I am trying to be a supportive partner and good parent but all I can think about is that the rug is just getting pulled from underneath me.

@Sorejaws

As you can see from my first post re having lodgers, I have only ever had female lodgers.

Oh that’s a relief

I think “most sensible intelligent” parents would not agree

Edited

I suppose most ‘sensible intelligent’ parents would prefer to loose their home and the roof over their children’s heads than have a vetted lodger in their house for a while?!?🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️,
Those sort of parents are not sensible or intelligent

beasmithwentworth · 03/09/2025 16:23

@Sorejaws no need to be relieved. I wouldn’t ever have male lodgers for the same reason most other sensible parents wouldn’t with children or young people in the house.

Exactly.

Clearly this has been swept under the carpet, but fact remains - this partner is horrible.

OP… this partner is not not just horrible but also completely financially dependent on you (and going by what you describe, I’d hedge a bet that her being sacked is very much her “fault”). See the bigger picture - this is no environment for a child to grow up in. This is no way for you to live. Make the leap. You’ll be fine, you have a job!

This is the OPs main problem - not what benefits his partner can claim. 🤷‍♀️

I remain relieved 🤷‍♀️
I don’t know you from Adam

@Sorejaws - in fact I got called out and trolled on my local forum for stipulating female only (which is perfectly legal) … charming hey 🤔

By men?

beasmithwentworth · 03/09/2025 18:12

@Sorejaws yes 2 men and also a father who had a trans young person.

Welshmonster · 03/09/2025 23:17

Definitely apply for job seekers allowance as she’s paid her taxes.

Wishbone436 · 04/09/2025 06:12

Look on entitledto to see if anything can be claimed.
speak to ACAS of similar as it doesn’t sound legal for her to be sacked for that.
if you haven’t already, go through a budget together & see exactly what is being spent, even the small stuff adds up. If it isn’t essential, cut it. Meal plans& only buy the ingredients you need to avoid overspending on food.
contact mortgage company & utilities to see if they can offer temporary help. Same with any credit cards/loans/debts you have.
encourage her to pick up any work for now, just to bring in some money.

Better yet… kick the abusive, nasty, lazy abuser out. Who blatantly lost the job through her own fault given how you describe her Op

SweetnsourNZ · 04/09/2025 06:25

She probably needs to go to interview s too, sometimes at short notice. Would be a shame to miss an opportunity due to childcare. Keeping the place is important too. Can you ask the bank for a mortgage holiday?
