Pull up a chair for some friendly chit chat about politics and beyond BrewCakeBiscuit

Taxes optional but greatly appreciated.

There's a massive container storage unit facility near me and every time I pass it I wonder what is stored in there? Close to the station as well.

Should the lights be turned out, see IMF thread, I'm positive that all the very lovely middle class people in our area will certainly storm it. Perhaps the opening of a dystopian novel?

BIWI · 03/09/2025 11:28

Bright green doesn’t really suit me - I look better in sludgier colours generally. In fact, I think I only have one item of clothing (that I currently wear) that’s green. I do have a lovely, very smart green suit - a sort of dark sage/olive colour - but as I’m no longer working, it just languishes in the wardrobe. Plus the fact that I’d have to lose about 54 stones to be able to wear it these days!

placemats · 03/09/2025 11:29

Keep it @BIWI

I just saw that flash up on BBC. Presumably, like the rest of us, she was told what to pay by a legal bod though?

DuncinToffee · 03/09/2025 11:34

How disappointing and such a stupid thing to do.

Some interesting things coming out of Zack Polanski’s social media this morning. He says he wants to make Labour scared if Greens like they are of Farage, because currently their fear of Farage is pulling them to the right. If he can make the left scary, the logic is that it’ll pull them back that way.
Not sure I like that he calls himself an eco-populist though. Populism is all about simple solutions - the ‘if you only have a hammer everything looks like a nail’ school of political thought. But a leftward weight would be nice.

Seems slightly dim to me. He seems to think that Labour have no experience of resisting the left, when it's been their entire existence since the 70s.

Rayner is being openly honest. I appreciate and applaud her.

How disappointing and such a stupid thing to do.

It was obviously a complex divorce with a minor child with considerable additional needs.

PandoraSocks · 03/09/2025 11:40

I am sorry to say this, but she needs to go.

That is what I'd be saying if it was a Tory deputy PM.

The Rayner haters will be cock a hoop.

There is that. But I think resisting the left within is different from the left from outside the party. Honestly, I’m up for even the vainest hope.

I would say since the end of WW2.

It’s not in Starmer’s power. Deputy Leader is an elected position.
Edit: though I suppose deputy leader doesn’t have to mean deputy PM.

placemats · 03/09/2025 11:43

The resignation of a deputy leader within the Labour Party triggers a membership based election process.

Notonthestairs · 03/09/2025 11:44

I dare say they will ask her to publish some of the relevant bits of the legal advice.

As far as I can see she (and ex-husband?) sold their home to a trust for her disabled child.

Following the sale she was advised that the standard rate of SD was payable on her next purchase.

Subsequently advised that this was incorrect.

Without seeing the initial instructions, the original advice and the follow up advice its difficult to comment much more it - not that that will stop anyone.

Do as Jeremy Hunt did - correct matters by paying the additional tax owed.

Edited

Yes, I meant as deputy PM.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 03/09/2025 11:44

I'm afraid I now think she has to go too. Someone in her position really needs to get better advice and think through the optics of her decisions.

Enter Andy Burnham?

Evenstar · 03/09/2025 11:44

I feel nothing but sympathy for her, tax in this country is far too complicated and if you relied on expert advice which was incorrect then it was not your fault. Meanwhile we should prepare for visitors here 🙄

Andy isn't a member of Parliament.

Ah, wasnt sure whether Deputy Leader was required to be an MP.

PandoraSocks · 03/09/2025 11:46

I am a bit gutted, tbh.

Yes, let's just ignore any visitors. They can gloat away on the "we hate Labour" thread.

Yes it is. So a Parliamentary selection that then goes to membership.

Whoops, meant Zahawi.
