Following on from the other thread…. Which tv series did they carry on too long?

We have seen some excellent examples of shows ended in their prime that we all wanted more of - now what about the tv series that we loved… but then they carried on too long and ruined it.

Scrubs - I like to pretend the whole Med School drain just never happened

House - What were they thinking in the final season?

Game of Thrones for sure. I have PTSD from the sheer disappointment in the last series.

Yeah but that’s not because it went on too long, it’s the opposite. They were desperate to wrap it up so shoe horned everything into a condensed final season when w hat should actually of happened is they should have let it continue with proper writers who still cared

@Bluevelvetsofa @ExcellentDesign how are you guys watching Slow Horses? I can only see it when my DS is home to watch it illegally on his laptop! I'm reading the books before watching any more than S3 but I'm really impressed with how close to the books the first 2 series are - they have JL absolutely perfect!

On the 'went on too long' vote, Arrow (what's with all the bloody spinoffs) Supernatural (although the final series was immense, they could have done it 7 series earlier) and obv everthing mentioned before like Casualty, Strictly, CTM , X factor etc

Clawdy · 29/08/2025 12:24

As someone said, definitely The Royle Family should have ended with the Queen of Sheba. The Christmas specials were cringey and awful, Dave and Denise portrayed as half-wits, like caricatures. Such a shame.

Dallas (showing my age!). I was allowed to stay up late on a Wednesday night to watch it with my dad.

I can still remember Bobby reappearing in the shower (after being killed in an accident several series before. His widow Pam had even remarried. It had all been a terrible dream apparently!).

My dad got up from his armchair and said 'right, I'm not watching that anymore' (I think we did though!).

CeciliaDuckiePond · 29/08/2025 12:30

If this counts - I hadn't watched Neighbours since the 1990s but made a point of watching the so-called last episode in 2022 (there was a helpful thread here called 'Neighbours for people who haven't watched it for 20 years' so we knew vaguely what was going on). Enjoyed it, thought 'that's a nice round up'.

Then they brought it back!

Now it's been cancelled again but I'm not watching yet another final episode 😅

We subscribe to Apple TV when it's on then switch it off again.

Last of the summer wine 1973/2010 !nearly 40 years.just dragged on .So many good series bowed out at just the right time .The Good Life .Fawlty Towers were short but sweet .

whynotwhatknot · 29/08/2025 13:06

umbrella academy should have stoped after series 2

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 29/08/2025 13:08

I agree with The Royle Family. I've just watched the first series again and they were so good, and they turned everyone into awful stereotypes and dimwits.

Yes, came to this thread to say this about Modern Family. See also Outnumbered, which stopped working for the same reason.

Showing my age here, but Minder should absolutely not have carried on with a new sidekick for Arthur after Dennis Waterman left.

Outnumbered was great when the kids were young! The way it was partly improvised made it fresher and more natural than most family sitcoms. Although poor Jake was kind of stuck in the middle, too young to be a put-upon adult, but too old to be a cute young child who talked imaginative nonsense.

When it came back after several years, it was interesting to see how all the kids had grown up, but it had turned into a cliched family sitcom full of old jokes.

I do haveca special long for the series set with them in the prison (series 8?).

Yes, there was ONE of the newer seasons that I did enjoy (the one where they think they meet Jesus was particularly amusing) but as a rule of thumb, those early seasons had magic that cannot be recaptured. Season 7 without Rimmer was awful - the show needs him and Lister as a bare minimum, I think either of the others leaving could have worked.

Not going out. Just absolutely embarrassing now. Loved it when it started.

Yup. Watched the current series and it was awful!

PlioTalk · 29/08/2025 10:52

Benidorm. It went to absolute shit as soon as the Garveys were written out.

The Royle Family, which I hate saying as I love it so much. It should've ended with The Queen of Sheba. I really didn't like how Dave went from being a perfectly ordinary cheeky chappie, to a complete mouth-breather.

I was going to say the same. I loved it right up until the Garveys/Harveys left and then it became absolute shite.

StreetStrife · 29/08/2025 15:03

Ackley Bridge should never have changed format for series 4 and 5, they were dire. It would have been better to stop with season 3.

AtlanticStar · 29/08/2025 15:07

@Tillow4ever Lost. I got lost and had to find my way out of it, which was kind of the point of the show. Was never-ending.

@evilharpyI LOATHED the Dawson family that replaced the Garveys, absolutely awful!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer. They had a beautiful ending with season 5. Although, season 6 was not bad, it made me feel sad to watch it and season 7 was an absolute shit show.

Dawson's Creek. I was so looking forward to the college years, but it was dull and I couldn't be bothered to keep watching.

Beverly Hills 90210. I got bored with it after a couple of seasons. The none of the character's story lines were of interest to me anymore.

The series that gave us “it eats you, starting with your bottom”, Willow turning into Warren, the slaughter of an Abercrombie and Fitch catalogue that gave us Anya’s backstory and Spike saving the world, a shitshow compared to the arse clenching awfulness of Riley, Glory and bloody Tara, who was wetter than a haddock’s bathing costume? Surely not! I grant you the Potentials were dreadful tbf.

PuppyMonkey · 29/08/2025 15:16

Line of Duty was amazing series 1-3. After that, not so much imho.
