Following on from the other thread…. Which tv series did they carry on too long?

We have seen some excellent examples of shows ended in their prime that we all wanted more of - now what about the tv series that we loved… but then they carried on too long and ruined it.

Scrubs - I like to pretend the whole Med School drain just never happened

House - What were they thinking in the final season?

You (as in the show, not you OP!) - I gave up on the last season as I realised I didn’t care about anyone in it, especially creepy old Joe himself

Agree with this. I loved the first 3 series but the last season was rubbish. I couldn't remember who any of the newer characters were or anything that had happened in the previous season and it was just so boring.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 29/08/2025 11:04

Yes Call the Midwife! It's just the Doctor Turner and his Wet Wife Show now. I'm waiting for them to discover and cure AIDS, they've covered almost everything else.

Fear the Walking Dead should have stopped after season 3.

Mrs Turner should be banned from saying, "Oh, Patrick!" in a mock exasperated tone, accompanied by an eye-roll, or "Oh, Patrick", in a soppy tone.

I don't know if they'd bother to write new dialogue for her, or whether she'd become a silent extra. Maybe the writers would get around the ban by having her say, "Oh Timothy!" instead.

@Cattenberg yes!
And if Trixie purses her lips much more they'll be coming out the back of her head.

It pains me to say it but, Red Dwarf. 1-6, was the best thing on telly. 7 onwards, meh…

Sux2buthen · 29/08/2025 11:41

Sex and the city should have stopped at the end although the first movie is good so maybe there. Anything after that is a let down

ihavespoken · 29/08/2025 11:48

@PsychoHotSauce yes The Blacklist! Who gives a shit about Elizabeth Keen (not me!) Once Mr Kaplan was out of the picture it really went downhill. I did enjoy Blacklist Redemption though Grin.
Westworld is my one. I loved all the series but the final one was terrible and I only lasted 2 episodes

worrisomeasset · 29/08/2025 11:52

Gavin and Stacey. The three series of it were great, the subsequent ‘specials’ were completely unnecessary.

Breaking Bad. If I could do my time again, I’d watch the first season and not bother with all the rest.

I know what you mean! I loved Red Dwarf but the newer stuff is terrible.

Silent Witness. There's really nothing left to cover and it shows. It keeps limping on and on. I only watch now to scoff at how ridiculously unrealistic it is, and to enjoy Nikki's wardrobe!

Darragon · 29/08/2025 12:01

Oh yes definitely Call the Midwife. When it was written exactly as things happened in the 50s it made sense. Now 95% of the endings are nothing like how things would have turned out in the 60s/70s and it really grates on me that they're always going for a happy ending over historical accuracy when that was never the intention of the series that directly referenced the Jennifer Worth memoirs. They've just turned the past into some silly happy clappy rose-tinted spectacle that's an insult to all the people who lived through it.

JoeTheDrummer · 29/08/2025 12:02

Modern Family. Loved the first 5 seasons or so, but the writers struggled once the original kids had all grown up a bit.

Personally I waiting for the all-knowing Dr Turner to predict a global pandemic 50 years hence 🤣

I do haveca special long for the series set with them in the prison (series 8?).

Notagain75 · 29/08/2025 12:04

Only fools and horses. It has the perfect ending where they finally made it , then ruined it all by bringing it back again

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/08/2025 12:04

With Call the Midwife im quite excited for the planned Prequel. I hope it really concentrates on the Nuns.

KnickerlessParsons · 29/08/2025 12:06

Has anyone mentioned The Last of Us? Second series wasn't a patch on the first I hope there wont be a third

Last Of The Summer Wine outstayed its welcome by at least twenty years. The original run of Doctor Who should have stopped when Peter Davison stepped down.

I hate Last of the summer wine for the fact the theme music was the soundtrack to my Sunday night terror of having another week at school looming. Honestly think if I listened to it now I’d be sick !

The Handmaiden’s Tale. Started out good when it related to the book but it dragged on too long.

I loved the first series. And refused to watch the others as I thought series 1 ending was good.

TheOnlyThing · 29/08/2025 12:09

Gavin and Stacey.
Phone Shop
Mrs Brown’s Boys

I don’t know how they even got commissioned

HarryVanderspeigle · 29/08/2025 12:12

Both Ghosts and Detectorists should have stopped before theor last Christmas special episode. Everything before was wonderful, we didn't need the bitter after taste.

I refused to watch Hawaii 50 after the Asian actors left when they wouldn't pay them as much as the white ones.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 29/08/2025 12:12

Game of Thrones for sure. I have PTSD from the sheer disappointment in the last series.

Yes, came to this thread to say this about Modern Family. See also Outnumbered, which stopped working for the same reason.

Showing my age here, but Minder should absolutely not have carried on with a new sidekick for Arthur after Dennis Waterman left.
